Ok so recently i had an argument with someone about Angel and Spike and their Souls...it was sort of along the lines of who earned there soul and who became better people (well Vampires) with it...in the sense of who did more to help. So who do you think??
:thought:

I think that Angel has definitely suffered more with his soul and has done the most good... so far... that's not to say that Spike doesn't suffer or hasn't done good, it's just that Angel has had it for so much longer.

Then there is that issue of Angel had a soul forced on him and Spike asked for his. But I have to say, Spike didn't have the most pure reason (in my opinion) for asking in the first place. It was a selfish reason, it was to be closer to Buffy.

I don't think Spike got his soul so much to be closer to Buffy, but as to make it up to her. Seems to have a bit a different connotation, that's all.

Aaaaah, two questions in the same poll : erm :

Who earned their soul more: Spike

Great answer.

Same for me. Spike earned his soul, because he asked for it, because he was feeling guilty, because he WANTED to be a better person.
Angel's soul was forced upon him. It might have been an appropriate punishment, but to say that he deserved it.. He has done more good though, and suffered more (I guess).

And, thus, I voted c.

spike earned his by going through all those test things... but went crazy lol...
angel wa cursed, but be came better...
i just voted for spike cuz i like him (slightly) better 😀

Spike earned it, he wanted it, Angel didn't. He worked for it, Angel's was given to him on a shiny platter (Or, you know, through a very painful spell. 😉)

And as for who did the most good with it...That's a hard thing to answer. Angel's done all the helping the helpless and what not, but Spike died to save the world. They've both done as much good as the other. Sure, Angel's done more things to help, but he didn't die for the world.

Spike earned and fought for his soul.

Both went through torment of trying to be a better man Angel with a soul and Spike with out his soul. In Angel's case he had more grief and torment in his life especially with his past.

Here's another one of those "Cavemen vs Astronaut" questions...

Okay, as far as coming to a decision, regardless of motives, to become a better person, of trying to do the "right thing" almost from the moment that he came to his senses, the answer is, unarguably, Spike.

As far as trying to make himself worthy of his soul, regardless of how he got it, I would have to say that the two are about equal.

As far as the sheer NUMBER of good deeds done willingly and without thought of reward, then possibly Angel has a slight advantage, but it is not as though he had been doing good all these years. By his own admission, (okay, Whistler's) Angel never went out of his way to consciously and of his own accord do anything for anyone, at least not that we ever saw. He was forced to help the submarine crew, and he never really helped the girl in the hotel. The only real good deeds that Angel ever did THAT WE KNOW OF, were on the show, and his motives were pretty much the same as Spike's: to help Buffy.

Who sacrificed the most for their soul? Spike gave his life, as far as he knew at the time, in the hellmouth in "Chosen."
Angel gave his humanity in "I will Remember You." I would call that a draw.

So, who did the most to earn their soul? I think that Spike earns a few more points for willingly seeking his soul, but not enough for a decisive win.

Now, who became the better person because of their soul? I think that Spike did, but I can't point to any single moment or act to back up that opinion.

So, my vote is "C" Both or neither.

I don't think it's as black and white as this. Sure, Angel had his soul forced upon him, and Spike purposely sought it out. Both became better men because of having a soul, regardless of how they attained it. Would Angelus have sought out a soul as Spike did? I doubt it. Spike was modivated by love. He got a soul to give Buffy what she deserves. Angelus had no capacity to love (Angel has said this) - so his catalyst, if he were to have gotten a soul, would have had to have been something else.

I voted Angel. Even though his was forced on him, I agree that Spike's was selfish. Angel has definitely suffered more for his and I think that that makes him a better man/vampire from it.

Plus, I preferred the 'story' of how Angel got his soul much more interesting than Spike. Don't shoot me but, when Spike got his back I couldn't help but think 'Really? They're doing this again?' Like I said, don't shoot me 🙂

angel has done more good with his soul, but he never chose it,
and spike did, because he loved buffy.

angels soul was deffo more useful than spikes
but spike chose it out of love
:')

Spike is SUCH a good character. There is definitely a reason they got him on Angel. Angel is too scared of his emotions, he likes to bury them. Spike lets everyone know exactly how he feels, and doesn't care what people think. I admire that.

When Spike went to do the trials, was his goal to get his soul or to be restored to pre-chipdom vamphood? I remember it was kind of a twist when he was awarded a soul at the end of the trials--was that just for the viewer (as in, he knew the whole time)? Or was I the only one who didn't realize what he was up to?

You werent the only one. I couldn't believe it when they souled Spike.
Wait, who earned their souls? Only one vampire did anything to actually get his soul so its a non-issue, Spike.

Who retroactively deserves their soul more, well Angel because he has done more. Obviously.

It's a completely unfair argument considering Angel has been ensouled longer. So the answer is a clear Spike in my book if you take that into account. Spike didn't waste anytime, Angel began his ensouled life with not much to show for it. Granted Spike had some pretty meaty support in the form of scoobies to help him, but he still has done more in the time given.... So Spike.

I must point something out though, this question won't remotely yield unbiased results.

Tricky! Angel if I remember, was given his soul has a punishment by the gypsys for killing one of their girls. Then spent the next hundred years or so living out of bins feeling sorry forhimself. It wasn't until Buffy came on the scene that he actually started doing some good.

Spike, earned his soul by going to some unknown tribe (Africa by the looks of the scenery) and did some very painful tests. This was just after he he tried to rape Buffy in the bathroom, whether this was from remorse I'm not sure, if it were it is definitely a strange form of self-punishment.

I thought his intention yes was to be [restored] to pre-chip Spike.
Oh dear lord, imagine if we had Spike for the last season and not Spike-Lite. Something Blue in the fourth (see, I got it right this time, Zelig!) season is where Spike began his journey to being a castrated image of a once multi-dimensional character.
