He is fantastic. He really knows how to break the rules and push boundaries and successfully do things that television has never done before. Most television shows that do the experimental thing usually fail, but are noble failures, but with Joss they work and are masterpieces. How else to explain how a guy can make episodes about silence on one end and on the other musical numbers work so well.
 
I'm surprised both Restless or The Body aren't on this list. After all, Restless was somewhat unconventional as it was entirely in dream-sequence, and The Body was shot entirely without background music -which is very rare in television.

yeah i agree joan, they should have been on there, frankly im suprised that epitaph one was on that list. It wasnt as groundbreaking as his other stuff.
 
Great to see, but I've never even heard of BuddyTV. Good list overall though--I always loved the "Three Stories" episode of house; "Friday Nights" episode of Gilmore Girls; and the O.C. episode on the list. But of all of those, and with all bias aside, of all the "experimental" episodes the Buffy ones were the best. They weren't just alternate universes or dream sequences, which is kind of a cliche for doing those kinds of episodes.

As much as I agree with the fact that Buffy episodes listed were probably some of the best, I think its important to bear in mind that because BtVS is already in the fantastic/supernatural it can get away with doing pretty much anything. The other shows on there like Dawson's Creek and The O.C are more 'real' shows so they couldn't have turned Dawson or Ryan/Seth into a puppet for an episode and got away with it. Dream sequences and the alternate reality are pretty much all they have.

I'm not trying to take anything away from Joss here, but he has a lot more scope than some of the other writers/directors that appeared in that list because he doesn't have as many obstacles in his way, the main one being reality/realism.

Completely agree, and I love those kinds of episodes; although I do think there are other avenues for doing experimental episodes.
This list almost seems too short, now that I think of it. Any other episodes from other shows (perhaps ones not mentioned on this list), or even some Joss (or Joss-related) that pop out to anybody?
