This is prob a stupid question but what did people wear in the 80's? We're haveing this 80's night and I don't have a clue what to wear, Googleing the 80's cloths is kinda useless so thought I'd ask the people that were there, as I was 2 and don't remeber much!

Where flares in the 70's or 80's??

Think of the 80's trend setters. Billy Idol (punk was 80s right?), Michael Jackson, Don Johnson (Miami Vice). 80's was DISCO, and what was that hairstyle you see on all the 80s rock musicians. I forget the name, but you hear it everywhere Dzzzzt. You know...the one where they cut it short on top, but let it grow long in the back. Oh wait...it just came to me - Mullets.

Mullets, yes, lol.

Bellbottoms - 70s

80s - You should try watching some John Hughes movies maybe. For a preppy guy...Izod shirts with the collar turned up, polo shirts, deck shoes. Skinny ties. Umm...big hair? There was lots of big hair. Ooh, how about with a hideous bandana. That's more glam metal I guess. Maybe find some 80s music vids online.

Pat Benatar......Robin Zander....Joan Jett. Back to the Future (the first one) is a great example....the bands Ratt, Motley Crue, Van Halen, all the big 80's hair metal. Baseball shirts, plaid skirts with big safety pins in them, miniskirts and legwarmers. Any John Hughes movies, Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller, Sixteen Candles. Penny loafers and white socks....

Hmmmm, I might have to break out my photo albums, LOL!

Edit:

nerd4hire agrees: Yeah...Pat Benatar...he should go 80s drag. Great idea. Oh wait...Farah Fawcett. 😀 lol.

LOL! Of course I thought of all the girly stuff!

I'm trying to track down a slideshow about mullets a friend emailed me a couple weeks ago.....TOO funny! You'll like it!

Clicking around I came across another one. John Travolta. He started 2 80's fashion trends - Disco, and the Urban Cowboy thing. What about Tom Cruise? Did he start any fashion trends like those Top Gun sunglasses. Oh BEG, you could go as Tom Cruise in Risky Business. You know, the scene where he air guitars "Old Time Rock and roll".

Tryin to remember what my older sibs wore. Hmm. My bro wore penny loafers, yeah. Blue jeans with a sport coat sometimes. Classic RayBans - sort of Roy Orbison-style shades. There was the trend of wearing bright red or bright blue leather shoes with tight pants. Kind of an early Elvis Costello look.

Also, intentionally, carefully ripped clothes were in - jeans, tops. Kinda the punk/new wave influence I guess.

Also, Members Only jackets and leather jackets with zippers all over them, like Michael Jackson's in the Thriller vids.

We have to hear from Pointy. I bet you he was in with all the hip 80s fashion trends.

I know he knows about this stuff - 80s Punk - the music anyway.

I like This One. It would be easy to duplicate for an 80s night. Punk is tight pants, right?

Cheeky bugger! I have never been hip or fashionable in any era :)
People wore what they wear today. For some reason the 80s are back. No idea why. Worst fashion decade ever.

Legwarmers and leggings and neon for girls. Not sure what for guys.

We went to an 80s night once and my boyfriend then wore a white t shirt with sleeves rolled up and Miami Vice type jacket with sleeves rolled up and jeans.

Watch Pretty in Pink, St Elmos Fire, Flashdance, Back to the Future, Fame - those should give you an idea.

You want a pretty standard look.

Wear tight white jeans, a frankie goes to hollywood t-shirt(tight) and a red leather jacket with black trim.

Ah, the 80s...the decade that fashion forgot...
I'd go for the New Romantic look...if I had the cheekbones for it 🙂 Try googling for images of Adam and the Ants, Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran, The Human League and ABC (I always liked their look...you know where you are with a gold lamé suit) Or the Miami Vice designer casual look...Armani suit with the sleeves rolled up over a simple t-shirt...and yes the mullet was the male tonsorial disaster area prevalent in the 80s...almost made me glad I went bald prematurely 😉

Edit - how could I forget the lovely old pantomime dame himself? Boy George...

Here's a link to some images of 80s bands from the BBC Top of the Pops site -

Tears for Fears and a Flock of Seagulls, too. And Annie Lennox! And Deborah Harry!
Thanks Guys, really helpful!!

I really wanna go as the Risky Buissness thing, with the shirt and no trousers, that would be such a laugh, only problem is it's in a club in Town, But I could just bring a pair of Jeans with me and put them on after a while.

Although If Im wearing only pants, that was could lead to pants being pulled down, although I could wear a few pairs?

Disco is from the 70's!
Clothes styles in the 80's was highly motivated by the new wave music videos which started around late 81' early 82'. So like it was suggested watch a lot of early video's and get lots of hair gel for the guys and hair spray for the girls. High teased hair was a competition between women. The Urban Cowboy look by Travolta was a regional fashion wear and not as huge as some would think.
Miami Vice was the 2nd largest influence, leather ties, t-shirts with sport coats sleeves rolled up and the dark shades.
Oh and BTW Camaro crash helmets, Tennessee tophats, Redneck scarfs, Achy-breaky mistakey's (aka mullets) were around before the 80's. lol But thanks for inducing an acid flashback of my youth BEG it was a nice little trip.

UUUGGGHHH I am so glad I was born towards the end of the 80s. Whenever I watch 80s movies I wanna gag at the styles and trends. Of course, the 80s were a huge step up from the 70s.

I wouldn't even go to an 80s night event. 🙂

The first thing I though was....hypercolour t-shirts! You know....the ones that started off one colour and then heat made them change colour in patches until you put it through a warm wash and ruined it? :lmao:

Other than that, I think fluro, headbands, tight jeans and big hair (and shoulder pads).

I'm glad I was only a kid through the 80's...I blame any terrible fashion choices on my parents 😛

Oh! I had one of those!
Remember if you are going to wear those big loud t-shirts never wear one that says Wham on it! lol....
Avoid lipstick i know Human league wore it to look pretty, but it it is gay so don't do it, and never wear pink...
Jacket sleaves should be rolled up, and jeans are tight and bleached.
