I just watched this today, I thought it was quite good. Much better the last couple of films I have seen of SMG. I didnt rate Surburban Girl and Southland Tales much! But this was good, I thought she was good in it and it had a good cast.

Has anyone else seen this?

Well I started watching it once and it was quite slow so I switched off, might try it again though. is it any good?

The Return is quite possibly THE worst film SMG has EVER done... its one of my top worst films of all time quite frankly. I wanted to hug SMG for The Air I Breathe though, I thought it was fabulous! It was a wonderful ensemble drama, it was poignant and her performance was truly great IMO, THESE are the type of films she should be making. I recommend that anyone hurry to rent/buy this film! I like ‘The Return’. It is not perfect, but I have watched it a few times and always enjoy it. I think I prefer it to ‘The Air I Breathe’, although I do like that film, as well. With the exception of ‘Suburban Girl’, which I found generally disappointing, I think SMG has made some decent films in recent years, even if she hasn’t had a lot of success at the box office since ‘The Grudge’.

I saw this movie. I really liked it and was very disappointed that it didn't get released in theatres nationwide. I was eagerly awaiting it, and then it never came. It was only shown for a few weeks in certain places.
 
I thought this movie was terrible. Normally I like movies that aspire to be pretentious, but this one was just ridiculous and silly...and was much better when it was called Magnolia or Short Cuts.

Seriously...the final segment with Kevin Bacon had me falling off my chair laughing. It was just so contrived...

I can see why the critics butchered it.

As for SMG, all she did was act depressed...not exactly a stretch for her.

I would agree that SMG is not obviously stretched by the role, but that is because it is a role that plays to her strengths as an actor, which I assume is why she was cast in the first place. There is nothing worse than an actor who is miscast in a role.

I also agree that the Kevin Bacon sequence is contrived and not especially effective. However, I would not be as critical of the film in general. It is derivative, but I think it is also quite well done. Personally, I don't think it is anywhere near as horrible as some of the professional critics would have us believe.
 
Well, we're gonna have to agree to disagree then because I thought it was almost 100% putrid beginning to end. And there's been so many movies that have taken the "ensemble, people-linked-by-fate" idea and done it so much better that you've gotta play in the big leagues...and this movie just doesn't. Anyone who found it deep or insightful has obviously not watched many quality films...

Your opinion of the film is entirely valid and I certainly don't have a problem with it. You make some very pertinent points about its flaws, although I would stop short of calling it "putrid". However, I would disagree strongly with this comment. While I personally do not consider the film to be especially "deep or insightful", but simply a reasonable piece of entertainment, you cannot tell someone what they might or might not take out of it. And an individual's opinion about a specific film has got nothing to do with what other films they have watched. Quite clearly "˜The Air I Breathe' is not of the same quality as "˜Magnolia', but not every film can be or needs to be a cinematic classic or push forward the boundaries of filmmaking.

I didn't say that every film needs be a cinematic classic or push forward the boundaries of filmmaking...obviously different films and genres elicit differing expectations...it's simply my opinion that anyone who really felt that The Air I Breathe was anything resembling sophisticated or deep entertainment has NOT seen many quality films...by MY standards. I'm not trying to offend anyone, you take away from a movie what you take away from it based on your own experience...I just felt it was a ridiculous piece of trash with tired themes.

I highly disagree with you, however, on your comment about a person's opinion of a film having nothing to do with other films they've watched. This is simply untrue.
 
Crash was bad enough on its own...The Air I Breathe makes it look like an absolute masterpiece.
 
I've seen it in shop, when I saw SMG played in it, I was doubting yet to buy it. I didn't. It's not really my genre of film, I might come back at that though.
