The All-Canadian Thread

We're gonna play some old time hockey, as the Hanson's would say (Slap Shot, of course). The dump and chase certainly can beat the trap, the only problem is if the team playing the trap gets the lead. If they have a goalie who can handle the puck they gain possession on the dump-in and ice the puck. I really think that they need to get a handle on it tho, by creating rules that counter this boring style of hockey.

Although Bettman would never do it they should:
1. Put in automatic icings (counters the time killed on an icing)
2. Re-instate tag-up offsides (no time to set up in the neutral zone)
3. Stop calling penalties on clean hits (no need for a reason here)

That's what I think, but n4h you certainly are right about Canadian style hockey being the end victor here.

Good point but I think it might be more the battle of the Capitol Cities. Toronto is the Capitol city of Ontario, while Ottawa is the Capitol city of Canada.

Very common misconception. Not only are there the Health Care premiums, BUT we are also severly taxed: both in Income and on Goods and Services.

For income tax, I am paying roughly 48% of my salary back to the Government. As well, for pretty much everything I buy (besides groceries) I pay 15% tax on top of the purchase price.

So we pay for our health care in our taxes (big time).

OMG I JUST saw this episode for the first time last week! I was just hollering - especially when they went to French Canada..then ended up in Newfoundland..I was like huh? The South Park people messed up! Then I realized (cause they said it) they had gone the wrong way...LOL!!!!

n4h: The trap is an invention of the devil. It must be eliminated at all costs...

Beer Nut: All of those ideas are great, but let me add some more:

1) Crack down hard on all stick infractions, especially slashing and crosschecking (when did it become ok to crosscheck if it wasn't to the head??).

2) Enforce the obstruction penalties.

3) Goalies are fair game for checking if they leave their crease, just like they used to be. And no limiting their ability to play the puck.

4) Reduce and standardize goalie equipment size.

5) Fire Kerry Frasier and Bill MacReary. These jerks think they are the most important people on the rink, and like to show that they can punish you if you disagree with them. Stick a pin in their ears, their heads are too big to fit thru the freakin' door...

6) When did clean hip checks become tripping? As a short player, this was a great weapon for me...

7) Fire Bettman...he's a goof.

Ok, hockey season is over...gotta let go...pre season starts in August...gotta let go...

PS: The only thing free about our health care here is that we're all free to wait much too long to see a doctor...Mrs. D works for a pediatric speciallist who is booking for January of next year...and that's for urgent cases...less urgent cases are booking for June 2005. The stories I can tell aboaut this...and I will if properly provoked...

FYI Elmo, the greater Toronto area has over 4 Million people in it. It was a hilarious episode of SP, but I still like the movie better.
 
Yup over 3 million here in Ottawa...lol well there is one GIANT highway called the TransCanada Highway..I guess that's what they were making fun of..but there are TONS of highways alone in each city..plus connecting cities...hehe if there were only one road we'd all have to live in a straight line!

On to the Health care, what KD said is so true. Wait times at Emergency Rooms are HORIFFIC! I could tell you stories that would scare your pants off!

Also, Just to book a yearly physical, I must book a year and a half in advance. How's that work? 🙂 And this is a doctor I've been going to since I was 14.

Doctors' aren't taking new patients because we have a shortage of doctor's and nurses.
 
Actually there was a time when the Canadian medical system worked. If you wanted a doctor you got one. If you walked into an emergency room you got taken care of. That doesn't happen anymore.

In my opinion it has to do with the insanity that has become the Canadian bureaucracy.

In any government, bureaucracy is this giant black hole you pour money into, and nothing comes out. Multiply that concept by a thousand, you have Canadian Bureaucracy.

There's lots of money to manage the medical system, but the system itself sees very little of it.

I'll give you an example of the kind of thing that happens. This particular example has to do with border security.

After 9/11 it was decided something had to be done about security on the US/Canada border. We sunk 1 1/2 billion dollars into it. If you go to the border though, it's still just one fat guy in a comfy chair reading a wrestling magazine. The lineups are longer is all.

So I was watching the news last night and a reporter was interviewing a bureaucrat about the problem.

He says to her, "1 1/2 billion dollars has been spent to improve border security. What's been done with that money?"

The lady gets right indignignant. She says, "There have been massive improvements to border security. 1 1/2 billion dollars has been spent to improve border security"

She sees no problem with that answer. She never will. You could spend the rest of your life trying to explain to her why that answer doesn't answer the question. You could draw her diagrams. You'd still get the same answer.

There was this theory at one time, the reason Canadian atheletes don't do so well at the Olympics is because they lack funding. They legalized lotteries to fund the atheletes. Billions of dollars are made from Canadian lotteries now. The atheletes still live in basement suites, and work at MacDonald's (if they're lucky) while they train on spartan facilities with meager equpment.

There's this government building in Ontario somewhere (of course) with the job of alotting the lottery money to athletic programs. I saw this reporter ask the bureaucrat in charge to show him how many cheques have actually been sent out. The bureaucrat had to admit none had actually been sent, even though that was specifically what they were commissioned to do, and had been in operation for over 2 years. He also told us they were busy as Hell though, and required more staff.

Where does the money for health care go? I don't know. Only the bureaucrats know, and if you ask them where it goes, they will only reply, "It goes".
 
I couldn't agree more n4h. For instance the public school system. They throw more money into it while at the same time people are clamouring for wage hikes, there goes all of the money. The money never gets to what/who it was intended for. It's the same everywhere, but the Canadian government is far to flippant with our money. The lose a few billion (BILLION) dollars and they expect that people will forgive them and re-elect them. There is a major need for governmental reform in Canada, but it isn't happening and never will because the people of Canada forget a few days after something happens. It's a catch 22 and very frustrating.

Well yeah, but at least the GST got rid of our national debt... oh, wait...

Ah, yes Canada. We spend billions of dollars on committees to figure out what's wrong with the military, the health care system, and the education system. The answer all these committees come back with is that these key government services are short billions of dollars. The genius politicians than spend several billion dollars from the next year's budget to fund more committees to see what they can do about the problem.

I am I the only one who sees the problem there...? ::eyes::

Quit funding these damn committees and put the money where it's needed!

Ah well, we may not have much, but we can be proud of the fact that we have plenty of the worlds most well funded committees!

Couldn't agree more. Every "normal" Canadian can see what's wrong, but they spend a fortune trying to figure out what everyone already knows. Really ticks me off!
 
Yeah well, they've spent millions of dollars on studies to figure out things like "fast food is fattening" and "exercise is good for you". Nooooo they're not pissing our money away at all!

I'm sure the homeless are glad to know that the government gives out million dollar grants to people to figure out that fast food will make you heavy. After all, if they didn't that money might have gone to those same homeless people so that they could have bought some of that stuff! Sure they're starving, but I imagine that they're thrilled that the boys in Ottawa saved them from the cruel fate of McDonald's inflicted "love handles".
 
My favourite study was one that was done a couple of years ago. The study cost 3 million dollars and it determined that "on average university students drink more than other people." Took real brains to write up that one.
 
The most alarming thing I've seen in this vein lately was a letter to the editor in our local daily waste of newsprint. An obvious Liberal supporter was quacking on about how the sponsorship scandal "only cost us $3 per person", which isn't really that much, eh? You can afford $3 to put in some Liberal hack's pocket, right, and you should be happy it's not $13! People in this country aren't forgetful...they're willfully blind in a lot of cases due to an incomplete understanding of the political process and an inability to think critically about what the lyin' b@stards say on the tv. I know people that will not vote for the Conservatives...not due to ideology, but because their parents only ever voted Liberal, and they do too...no matter what it costs us. I'm not naive enough to think that the Conservatives won't become corrupt...but they're not right now, so get out the brooms, and keep 'em ready for when the next government needs to be removed. At that point I will vote against the party I put in...this is not hypocritical, this is a right vs wrong thing. If you've done wrong, you pay...except in our legal system (notice I didn't say "justice"...'cause ther isn't any...). But that's another conversation for later!
 
I think that sponsorship scandal thing is kind of like fleas. If you see one, there's probably 1000 you don't see.

I don't know about you, but that sponsorship thing didn't surprise me much. I'd always assumed that kind of thing went on as a matter of policy.

I think there's as much graft, payola, or bribery in Canada as there is in Mexico, we're just more civilized about it. Translaton: we hide it better.
 
Guys - try working for the Federal Government. I just want to punch myself in the face every day when I come into work. Luckily we are an independent Agency independent of whatever Political party comes in to power but regardless..the beaurocracy here is just mind-numbing. And I HATE seeing how our funds are abused.

I'll tell you where our hard-earned tax dollars go...to the 400 dollar haircuts the MPs get. To the rooms at the Chateau Laurier they stay in for events regardless of whether they LIVE IN OTTAWA or not. SICK!

My uncle was an aerospace engineer, he worked for the Canadian Military for years. Well let's just say we couldn't even afford to keep our planes running, let alone actually send them out in the case of a National Emergency.

We are a land of natural resources, yet we send them all down to our cousins south-of-the-border resulting in obsenely high gas-prices. And what is the Government's response to the backlash? Sustainable Development. Take a bus. Car pool. Whatever.

UGH I could go on and on and on.

Interesting sidenote: I'm attending an event tomorrow night for Steven Harper. He's just arrived in Ottawa. Yeah you can guess just what kind of event.

But you know what KD you hit the nail right on the head. I seriously think that anybody who votes Liberal is just ignorant. Because like you said, they're parents did. They go on the basis of "better the devil you know, than the devil you don't."

My co-worker put it best; "I think it's time for a new bunch of thieves to come into power!" 🙂
 
I personally will be voting for Harper. But I have one ideological hang-up, that being the abortion issue. I am 100% for a woman's right to choose. But I don't worry about it because by Canadian law it has to be a free vote, therefore it would never go through. Also he said that he would not introduce legislation. Jenny, I'm really sorry that you gotta work for the government, but at least it's steady work. I've been unemployed for 2 months trying to get on the police force and I can barely pay the bills...lol, but at least I don't have to work for the money grubbing buggers in Ottawa.
 
He has said it's not part of his platform...the abortion issue, the gay rights issue and a few other things have bothered me about Harper. But I guess I shall see tonight, I'm sure those questions will be asked.

Well I used to work in High-Tech here in Ottawa, and that's all but gone down the pooper here (I was a Nortel employee...ohhhh yeah!)

So I was out of work for 6 months..then worked for 6 months..then laid-off again and out of work for 8 months..then I got my job here a year and a half ago...and hey it's work what can I say? Still paying off the debt I accumulated during the periods of un-work.

Oooh I hope you get on the police force...dangerous but very commendable work! Good luck!

I'm so sorry for you having worked for Nortel. It's funny cause the place that I worked for was along the same lines as Nortel (we built for and bought product from them) along with many other companies. My place was called Celestica.

I'm really srry about your unemployment ordeals, that's pretty harsh. I hope I never have to go through that.
