I mean not that the sonic screwdriver wasnt always a mcguffin to a lesser extent, but by making the show fantasy then they can make it a super magical mcguffin screwdriver. I mean it now creates force field shields, what else can it do when you need it to?
 
At the end of the day a show can be as political as it likes so long as the writing is good. That's the problem with Who at the moment. The writing is terrible. People thought with Chibnall gone and Rusty back it would get good again. Unfortunately Rusty can't write to save his life. He relies on Mystery boxes (we have 2, Ruby's parentage and who is Mrs Flood) nostalgia bait (look it's David Tennant) and rehashing old plot threads and stories.
This whole child like fantasy dumb down is because he knows it's terrible but the 3 to 4 Yr old audience won't care because you know singing Goblins

That's probably my biggest issue with the sonic in the episode. I understand the sonic affecting technology, that's always made sense. But it's being pushed beyond what I feel like it was initially capable of doing. And I also get the critique on the gloves and how they were used at the end. I thought The Doctor explained it held the weight of the holder, or something, so it didn't make ENOUGH sense that The Doctor was able to pull the ship down at the end of the episode.

I also don't like the sonic NOT LOOKING LIKE A SONIC. I hated Capaldi's glasses, and I don't like the computer mouse design of this one.

The story isn't written for 3-4 year olds. That's a bit much.

Mysteries usually drive plots in sci-fi though. I think that's a bit of a stretch to have a gripe about. Almost every season has had a mystery, since New Who began. It's a season-long thread. And it's not just Davies, Moffat and Chibnall who do this.

Look at Buffy: Who is the Master? Who are Spike and Dru? Who is the Mayor and what is his end game? What is the Initiative and what are they hiding? What is the key and who is Glory? What the hell is going on in Sunnydale in Season 6? What is the First?

Allegedly, there's a spin-off about the Sea Devils in the works, it's called The War Between The Land And The Sea. It's apparently going to start filming on March 4th 2024. Written by RTD.

I wonder how many spin-offs they are planning. That does sound kind of Disney. I also wonder, with more concern, whether they might end up overdoing the spin-offs. Which also sounds kind of Disney.

Personally I see that as a sign that the writers/showrunner are all out of ideas that fit into the constraints of 'Dr. Who sci-fi' and so they're just gonna say 'f*ck it, it's gonna be a fantasy series from now on'.
It can't really be any other reason; it's not as if they're bothered about any kind of continuity or pretense or historical realism at this point.
 
Yeah, he's pretty much a wizard now.

My guess is this. Fantasy is easy, whereas history and science fiction are hard. You have to do research, you have to understand and like the subject matter. Fantasy just requires you to throw some tropes together.

Also, consider Gen Z doesn’t have a rosy view of either past, present or future, so the best you can offer them is escapism.

Fulfilling Sydney Newman's manifest destiny of '86. Well, he and Chibnall (though on the make the Doctor a woman, we'll blame it on Tom Baker and John Nathan-Turner for winding up the press the way they did 44 years earlier*)


*They and the bookies never let up til Moffat HAD to grovel to Chibnall about taking over and the rest was tragedy. Had they not been shitfaced drunk during that press conference, we'd at least have a 4th Season for Capaldi in '18 verses what we ended up with
 
@Bop Looking through the serials, I have read a few, but I don't appear to have even watched one. Not even The War Games!

The War Games is very good though since it's Troughton's last story it's probably best to watch it last because you'll get the full impact if you're attached to him and his companions when you watch it.

Which ones have you read?
 
It looks like The Tomb of the Cybermen, The Ice Warriors, The Enemy of the World. The Web of Fear and The War Games.

It wasn't his last he was in the 3 Dr's and 5 Dr's specials and 2 Dr's
