The All-New, All-Different, Random Dr. Who Thread not strictly related to the specials thread

I haven't seen much of One and Two. An Unearthly Child, The Daleks and The Time Meddler is all I think. No, wait, The Chase too.

They are all on Iplayer I think

Matt Smith based a lot of his Dr on Troughton's. Also the Troughton formula is used by a lot of Dr Actors. Do 3 years then get out

I found the old stuff on iPlayer. Oddly, not by searching on iPlayer itself, where I kept finding new era material, not classic Who. Perhaps I was searching wrong.

@Bop I think The Abominable Snowman is the prequel to The Web of Fear isn't it? Though prequel is not really the word I was looking for.

I have seen Two in the three specials. Three, Five and Two Doctors.

Classic Who is on there top. Just type Who and it should come up

Ah, I was searching wrong on the computer. Until I brought up all the results, Classic Who didn't appear.

@Btvs fan I want to see The War Games because I have read it, and that is the first appearance of the Time Lords isn't it?

There's a Time Lord called the Monk in the 1st Dr era but the Time Lords as a whole yes.

@thetopher @Skanky Vamp Have you ever seen of the Troughton era ?

Yes, The Time Meddler is one of the Classic serials I've seen. Though, from what I recall, it wasn't elaborated at the time what he was.
@Btvs fan : Not many; Tomb Of The Cybermen, The Abominable Snowman (with those adorable yeti things...), The War Games (his last one) The Three Doctors (if that counts) and The Two Doctors (unfortunately)

I've greatly enjoyed every performance of his that I've seen and I find him more likable than the Doctors that came before or after him.
I'm also of the opinion that he and Jamie were one of the better Doctor/Companion combinations

Yeah it is sort of a prequel because the Yeti and the professor return in The Web of Fear, I only read The Abominable Snowmen because there isn't any version of it on ITVX which is where I watch all the classic stuff. But I'm glad I read it, I found it easy to hear Troughton's voice and see how he acted it in my mind. Same with Jamie and Victoria.

iPlayer has the only surviving episode of The Abominable Snowmen . The other five are apparently animated, just not available on iPlayer.

I.e regards the 2 Doctors special. For the 5th Dr, his best episode was The Caves of Androzini , now that was a genuinely bit of great writing and his last.

So is Perivale actually a bad place to live or was it just Ace's experience? I had to google where it was- London, but I've never been in that area myself.

Your argument seems very similar to the puritanical arguments of the 1980's that were coming from the right, sorry but they were wrong then and they're wrong now.
Do you know what puritanical actually means? If so then what I said wouldn't be ironic. It's not actually puritanical to believe that one argument is flawed wrong and another isn't; because I'm not excluding your argument for the conversation, I am, in fact, exgaging with you in debate.
It's less idiotic an assumption that children seeing Davros and automatically thinking 'all wheelchair people are evil'.
Simplistic media exists for children but 'family entertainment' can afford to be a bit more nuanced that RTD's bigoted thought-processes would allow.

You may be engaging in debate, but please take care with how you do so. You are in the above belittling another member quite harshly and rudely, in effect making your post as much about the poster as about the post itself.

You have been here long enough to know that we don’t allow personal attacks, and that when one feels particularly provoked, it is better to step back and response when one is in a better state of mind.

You are obviously defending the new direction Nu-Who is going and you're defending the rationale behind it.

And that is ok. I am not sure how this is a counter argument. We allow a thread like this - though it can stir feelings - because one should be allowed to critique. However, also to defend.

Thoughts were asked of by the OP, but not what kind of thoughts were dictated. You may criticize Nu-Who, but when it is defended we expect you to respond with civility rather than acrimony.

So I am a relatively new who (somewhat) ex-fan and I was puzzled by this comment from BBC:
"the show has and will always continue to proudly celebrate diversity and reflect the world we live in."

To me, the large part of Who appeal was that it didn't reflect the world we live in. It showcased other worlds and their trial and tribulations as allegories to our world. Am I wrong? I don't really want to see a Dr. Who focused on, and reflecting upon, the world we live in. To me, the more the Dr. stays on (modern-day) earth, the less interested I am. The sure fire way to kill most sci-fi is to have it reflect the world we live in.

Thoughts?

It's just typical showbusiness "I am all for diversity and inclusion, blah blah blah, please don't sue me, woke brigade," stuff. I wouldn't read too much into stuff like that unless I was a lowlife Youtuber who makes a living by pretending like each and every little thing is the end of the world, to generate clicks from outrage.

Question: What do you guys and gals think of the Blu-Ray Classic Who? While it's great that they're packaging the show by season box sets rather than individual stories, it feels very weird to me to see this low budget B show in such HD. And I say "low budget B show" with all the love in the world. Doctor Who, especially the original series, has always been a program where the strength lies in the writing, the ideas, and the characters, which isn't to say they haven't had fantastic sets and alien creatures--if anything the budgetary limitations forced them to get more creative and imaginative with their creatures than other sci-fi programs. But it was always low budget even for tv and that was part of the charm. Seeing that show now get so much attention to detail feels almost at odds with its very B-movie type charm. It's a clashing of ethos, like a hobo flying first class.

P.S. I don't actually own the Blu-Rays. I have a bunch of VHS tapes though, which is where I personally feel the show looks most "right." But I know what the Bluray video quality is like because the versions on Pluto TV (and I assume Britbox) are the Blu-ray re-releases.

A bit of news… (spoiler!)

Looks like Davies is going back to his annual companion run. Billie got one year with each of her doctors (I believe if Eccleston stayed, she probably would have been replaced in series 2), Freema got a year with Tenant, and so did Catherine. I kind of like that the companions aren’t forever with the doctor. I feel like classic Who had changes more often. And I like that we can see the Doctor with more companions this way. Yaz stayed way too long with Thirteen. And I kind of feel the same way with the Ponds and even Clara. Switching up companions offers the Doctor new dynamics.

However, I hate that this was spoiled. I wish it could have been kept under wraps as a surprise.

If replying, keep your response in spoiler tags for people who wish not to be spoiled!

I think it's okay as long as the original version is still out there. I'd probably buy one of the collection box sets if it was a Troughton collection and if it was a DVD collection because I don't have a blu-ray player.

I guess it is quite unusual for a companion to only have one season without it being the end of the doctor or showrunner's era which was the case with Donna and Bill but I think one season is enough for each companion. I've never seen the new companion act but hopefully she will be good.

weren’t a lot of classic companions only there for a season or a little more than as season? Right?

It's not really a spoiler, since of course every companion will exit sooner or later, and the devil's in the details of course. It does seem a little unusual for a companion to only last one year (barring the end of an era) but it's not unprecedented (e.g. Martha Jones). It's probably more unusual that the press are reporting the actress' exit well before her first episode of the new season has even aired! (Not counting the christmas special). Disagree on Clara and the Ponds. They're some of the best companions. Amy and Rory's family saga continued to evolve over Series 6, and Clara didn't even really come into her own until Series 8. She worked so much better with Capaldi.

As for classic companions, most were there for 2-3 years, but there were definitely some only there for a season.

Liz Shaw, and the original Mary Tamm incarnation of Romana were only there for a year, as well as Victoria I believe.

Jo Grant, Sarah Jane, and Jamie were around for 3 years. I want to say 3.5 in Sarah Jane's case.
Ace, Tegan, and Nyssa had 2-3 years.

Leela and the Lalla Ward Romana had 2 years.

I would say most full-time companions stay an average of 2 years, but 1 or 3 are not uncommon either.

Someone posted this from another thread, but still this pitch from RTD back in 2003 shows why Russell T Davies was absolutely the last person who should have ever been let near Doctor Who back in 2003 never mind 2023.

The man is a tedious, shallow, Heat Magazine loving moron who had 0 respect for the show, its legacy and even less understanding of what made it work.

"And considering he’s an alien, he’s more human than the best human you can imagine. He should also be sexy. Not necessarily young, but let’s move on from that neutered, posh, public-school, fancy-dress-frock-coat image."

"If the Zogs on planet Zog are having trouble with the Zog-monster… who gives a toss? But if a human colony on the planet Zog is in trouble, a last outpost of humanity fighting to survive… then I’m interested. Every story, somehow, should come back to Earth, to humanity, its ancestors and its descendants."

"The fiction of the Doctor has got forty years of back-story… Which we’ll ignore. Except for the good bits. The rest of the series continuity is absolutely irrelevant. I don’t care that in 1973, he used gadget X to escape from planet Y. And regeneration isn’t important... The new mythology mustn’t become as tangled as the old."

"Whether we develop it or not, ‘Last of the Time Lords’ has got a ring to it. And it guarantees that no men in silly hats are going to turn up."

"If we could have the voice at the beginning of The X Factor introducing each episode I would do it."

You can just imagine that whilst other writers combed through sci fi comics, literature and movies for ideas, RTD sad in his office combing through heat magazine to see what was hot to do an episode about, and of course no one could say no to him. As seen with Eccelston and Gibson, in RTD's own words "contrary opinions don't get a look in."

Those are real quotes? They aren't made up?

Those are real quotes? They aren't made up?
Nope. They are 100 percent real.

Again maybe I get too carried away LOL, as believe it or not I do like some of the RTD era. It's just the older classic who fans that put up with this that annoy me the most. Those who were introduced to it via RTD? Fair enough, but the old fans, why do they champion people like RTD and Chibnall for that matter who openly dislike the original and basically want to piss all over it? Why do they see these guys as saviors and why do they get angry at the thought of someone wanting to go back to doing something like the original?

Never seen such a self loathing fandom as classic who fans. They are the lemmings of sci fi fandom.
