May I just say that it drives me crazy when people call Angel/Edward and Buffy/Bella similar? Personally, there are far more dissimilarities than similarities between these couples. My examples are strictly from the television show, as I don't read the comics. This post has no intention of offending anyone who likes Edward and Bella, nor anyone who believes these two couples are very similar, though I hope to persuade you otherwise. 😀 Be aware that I don't mean to state this post as fact; it is my opinion.

Angel and Buffy are heroes; time and time again, they give up their own wants/needs for others. I can't stress this point enough. Yes, they are swept up by each other (I believe this typically happens with first loves), but this is not a negative thing in their case, as Buffy remains the Slayer; she does not abandon her friends/family/duties/responsibilities (life) to be with Angel.
On the other hand, Bella is ready, eager even (very quickly!) to give up her mortality, identity, family and future to become a vampire in order to be with Edward. She defines her whole existence on Edward. On multiple occasions, Bella neglects and dumps her "friends" (more like acquaintances, if you ask me) and very close friend Jacob, in order to be with Edward.

Angel and Buffy move on with their lives (though clearly the pain/loneliness remain) when Angel leaves in Season Three. They each have to grow and experience life separately, and they both embark on journeys that take them down different paths. They each have duties and responsibilities as heroes; Angel forms his own team and swears to help the helpless, while Buffy continues to grow stronger as the Slayer with the help of her friends. Angel and Buffy have goals, they have purpose. When Angel leaves, he does not return to Sunnydale to begin a romantic relationship with Buffy. He comes back only on certain important occasions to help/comfort her (i.e. after Doyle receives a vision of Buffy in serious trouble [in which Angel remains hidden], to comfort Buffy from the loss of her mother, after Buffy is pulled out of Heaven, etc). As I wrote in the previous paragraph, Buffy does not give up her life after Angel leaves. He is not the only important thing in her life, and Buffy knows this.
On the other hand, Edward doesn't leave for good, though it seems he does as he removes the stereo and all the pictures of him from Bella's scrapbook. After he leaves, Bella spirals into a severe depression for months, practically giving up her life. They end up starting a romantic relationship again when Edward returns, and Bella reverts back to the person she was pre-Edward leaving (her life entirely focused and revolving around Edward).

Angel and Buffy have lives outside of their relationship. At the time of Buffy's death, Angel had built a Scooby-like team and friendship of his own, consisting of Cordelia, Gunn and Wesley. He had successfully started up Angel Investigations, and has saved numerous lives with the help of his friends. Angel deals with Buffy's death in an incredibly mature way, and is able to grieve and move on.
On the other hand, upon hearing that "Charlie is at the funeral," Edward jumps to conclusions and immediately decides to kill himself with no care for his family (Carlisle, Esme, Jasper, Alice, Emmett, Rosalie) and with no consideration for their thoughts/feelings on the matter.

Buffy is not consumed by her love for Angel. See "Becoming Part 2." 'Nough said.
Bella is the polar opposite in this case.

While Angel and Edward are both broody, AtS allowed Angel to portray many different shades of his character. In addition, Angel himself is completely aware and often makes fun of his broodiness (not to mention many of the other characters do too).
After four books, Edward remained.. Broody Edward.

Angel and Buffy are a very romantic couple, but are, again, poked fun at; i.e. In AtS, Cordelia and Wesley mocking their reunion. This makes Angel and Buffy a more light-hearted couple.
Edward and Bella are never portrayed in this shade.

Individually, Angel and Buffy have character and personality and flaws and are far from perfect.
None of this describes Edward and Bella. Flat, dull, obsessive, vain and selfish does.

I could go on..

I agree with all of this. I'm sorry but I hate Twilight.

Me too. And I know we're supposed to be ignoring the comics, but can I just throw in that Bella and Edward never had universe-creating space-sex. In Angel and Buffy's defence, however, they never had a half-human, half-vampire, freakily-rapid growing spawn who Spike (ie Jacob) fell in love with. Gosh, if that had happened...!:eek2:

So clearly there are differences 😀

I went to go see The Last Airbender way back when and the guy asked if I was going to Twilight. I was like "uh, hell to the no." And he was like "oh, so do you like real vampires that don't sparkle or no vampires?" And I said "Real vampires." He said "Who's your favorite?" I said "Spike from Buffy is my favorite fictional character of all time, so Spike." Then he said "Well Angel is a lot like Edward and Buffy's a lot like Bella and their relationships are very much the same so that's interesting your favorite vampire would come from Buffy yet you hate Twilight." I went OFF on him and gave him basically the rant you just gave. Along with parts from another one posted on the BuffyNews twitter that VH re-tweeted.

I don't hate Twilight. I like watching the movies but I'm not really crazy about it. On the other hand, I really admire Buffy. Her physical and emotional strength, the fact that she always finds a way. Buffy didn't want to be the Slayer but the Slayer is who she is. It is part of her being. Even if she didn't have the strength of 10 men she is smart enough to fight evil. Bella is presented as a fragile person and sometimes I really don't like her persistence to become a vampire. Buffy loves Angel but she never wished to become a vampire. I admire this in her.

OMG what in blue blazings? Edward and Bella compared with Angel and Buffy, oh please. Twilight is the worst vampireness thing ever. Buffy and Angel are nothing like the gruesome naff actors of Twilight, I feel sick now. HA.

Honestly, I am not biased about this because I don't regularly bash Twilight. I got friends who looove the whole romantic plot of the books. But as for me, it just doesn't compare to the characters we have on BtVS... Buffy is nothing like Bella. So right from there you just CANNOT compare these two. Sure there was some cheesy moments with Bangel, but it was actually EMOTIONAL and touching at times. Which I never felt about Edward/Bella. They just always seems coldish... Their ship is just NOT moving.

Must have been writing my reply when you posted. I agree, they cant be compared.
I just dont think you can compare the two. Im a fan of both Buffy and Twilight (although to a lesser extent), but besides being about vampires and the whole epic love, I just see them as very separate and very different series. I like them both for what they are.

Since I've already been engaged in a Twilight/Buffy discussion I'm just gonna say this: They are NOTHING alike, everything is DIFFERENT and I like both but I prefer Buffy if I had to choose. That's it.

I read the Twilight saga and quite honestly enjoyed it a lot becasue of the way the author wrote it and I identified with Bella a little. I liked how the author explained things regarding vampires in a different way. Not once during my reading or watching the movies did ever see the Bella/Edward as another Buffy/Angel. Since then I have read articles and posts and have started to see the slight similar between the two but still think the two love stories are different enough to stand alone. I will read the books and watch the movies over and over again because I like romances in general but I will always like the Buffy and Angel love story more and the shows Buffy and Angel more. I have seen the movies and like them a lot as well and I can read the book. Usually if I have read the book I can't see the movie and visa versa. Nothing is totally original anymore anyway and you can find similarities in just about every character that is in movies and books if you look hard enough.

Hahahaha! This is freakin beautiful! I *love* it. And totally agree. I *do* think Edward and Angel have several similarities, but Buffy and Bella? Dear lord, where do I begin with how unalike they are??

I can't remember where- it may even have been somewhere on the Boards- where someone was talking about a Twilight drinking game and the rule was to take a shot every time Bella set the feminist movement back 20 years. You'd be wasted in no time!

wonderful post KristenVictoria. I couldn't have said it any better myself. I read all of the books and enjoyed them enough but not all into it like everyone else is. The books were way more bearable than the movies. And I agree with you. Buffy and Bella are in no way shape or form similar to eachother. The same goes for Edward and Angel...well about 90%. I think the only similarity they have is when they both leave their girl, but that's about it. I think it's sad and a bit annoying that people compare the Twilight Saga characters so such wonderful and more realistic (in some ways) as the characters of BtVS and AtS

I agree with you. I hate Twilight, but let's put that on side.

I hate when someone compares those two with Bangel.

When someone says Bangel is immature, I think of Bella and Edward. Bella is a girl who depends on her boyfriend completly. She can't live without him, can't fuction without him, when she's not with him she thinks only about him. He's her world, and she can't move from it. Stephanie Mayer could give her female character best qualities and she gave her the worst.

No offense to its fans, but I HATE Twilight. And taking it a step further, I HATE when people even compare the whole Angel/Buffy/Spike love triangle to the Edward/Bella/Jacob love triangle. Sure, the parody of "New Moon" on the latest comic was funny, but beyond that, both are completely different stories. The only real similarity I see with Angel and Edward is both watch Buffy/Bella when they sleep. But, Edward is just way more creepy when he does it for some reason, at least for me, lol. I see no comparisons to Buffy and Bella whatsoever. Buffy is much more of a strong independent woman than Bella ever is or ever could be.

Lol that's awesome!
I agree with a lot you said and one of the big things that makes them different is the life outside the relationship. Bella and Buffy both love their companions but when it comes down to it Buffy will always be a hero and do what she has to do even if that means staking Angel.
Bella went into depression like you said and didn't care for anything she never even really wanted to try another relationship. Buffy and Angel had relationships and emotions for others. But I guess it is up to the person how they want their relationship.

The only thing I saw similar was the vampire/human relationship and watching the preview made me think of Buffy and Angel but when you think about it they are completely different.
