The Avengers 2 – What are your expectations?

After The Avengers' enormous commercial and critical success, the expectations on the movie's sequel appear to be equally high. Joss Whedon said in an interview, "I know I can't match the success of the first one but I can try to make a better film & that's what I'm excited about, that's the new room of fear I'm entering now."
What do you guys expect from The Avengers 2? What should they do differently from the first movie? What can they do better? Which way do you want the story to go?


Here are my wishes and expectations:
I have quite specific expectations for the movie, both stylistic and story-wise. In general, I want it to be a little grittier and darker. The villain, it has been confirmed, is going to be Thanos, so a darker atmosphere would fit.
Now for the story. The story of the first movie was rather simple. Now I want it more complex and, like the movie itself, darker. As we can see in the [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhV4pIsE5X8"]alternate opening[/ame], the heads of SHIELD weren't exactly delighted about Fury's decision to bring together the Avengers. So the first movie was basically the first joining together of the Avengers. Now they're separated again and it seems more difficult to bring them together again. I also think it would be great, if the first one or two hours were basically just story. All the characters are working on their personal issues, and Fury has a hell of a problem bringing the Avengers together again, while Thanos terrorizes the world with whatever evil (and hopefully interesting) plan they're going to come up with. And then the whole story leads up the the climax of the movie, when the situation seems more hopeless than ever and the Avengers finally come together to the final battle, proving to the SHIELD people that Fury was right all along.

I think it would be great if one of the heroes died. I don't care who, as long as it's not Tony Stark 😛 But I doubt that Marvel would allow it, because every single character is a real money making machine. They sure wouldn't wanna take a pass on those hundreds of millions of bucks...
Also, Gwyneth Paltrow is probably not going to be in the movie. She said she was getting too old for a movie like that. And if she doesn't change her mind, I suspect her character is going to die in Iron Man 3 or maybe off-screen between Iron Man 3 and The Avengers 2.
However, the last thing the second movie needs is a cheap resurrection of Agent Coulson. I've read something about a scene which hints that Coulson was only some kind of robot when Loki stabbed him. Please, Joss, don't let the producers talk you into doing some crappy twist, just to let this rather unimportant character return.

I'd like a bit more character development in Captain America. I've heard that the director's cut of The Avengers is going to be over three hours, because they sliced off a ton of stuff Joss had planned for Steve Rogers discovering the modern world and adjusting to it. They'll probably tackle that more in the "Captain America: Winter Soldier" movie, but I'd like to see more of his interaction on a human level with the other Avengers.

If they're doing Thanos that means they're doing the Infinity Gauntlet, which should be awesome. For those who don't know, the Infinity Gauntlet was a major 80's crossover event in Marvel, which involved almost every superhero they have. It's, by far, the most famous Thanos storyline. They will have to adjust quite a bit though. The Infinity Gauntlet itself (which was shown very briefly in the "Thor" movie) is so powerful in the comics that they'd have to tone it down to work in a movie. The Fantastic Four and Spiderman are also huge parts of that story in the comics, and without them it wouldn't make a ton of sense, so I'm not really sure how the movie could leave them out and remain faithful to the original story. That being said, "The Dark Knight Rises" rolled about three or four of the biggest Batman stories of all time into one and it was awesome, so I'm more than willing to give whatever The Avengers 2 is a chance.

I have a feeling this will be the setup for a third movie through Nick Fury's arc. His big story in recent years has been "Secret War", which is the story of him getting removed from power in SHIELD after he acts without his superior's consent and is replaced by Maria Hill. That leads to one of the biggest Avenger's storylines ever, "Civil War", which is basically Iron Man vs. Captain America. It's about the government trying to register all superhumans, and it splits The Avengers down the middle, with Iron Man and Cap leading each side. That would be a really cool concept to see in a third movie, assuming it could be done well. I would think Fury will be booted from SHIELD this movie.

To begin with, I would expect that "Avengers 2" will be focused a bit more on plot than just action. There will probably be a fair amount of time devoted to some group lobbying to have the Avengers declared vigilantes at best, and terrorists at worst, and demanding that the members be banned from "suiting up" under threat of arrest and lengthy prison sentence. My guess would be either Senator Stern or Justin Hammer, or both, from "Iron Man 2" would be heading the group. Then, of course, something evil and tremendously powerful pops up, and "Who you gonna call," won't be the Ghostbusters.

If a new team member is indeed introduced, if Joss decides to stick with canon, it should be Ant Man (or Giant Man) and the Wasp, since they were on the original team. If not them, I have no guess.

As for Coulson, he COULD be revived, given the technology at S H I E L D's disposal, and considering his apparent importance to the group, it would seem quite logical for Fury to have it done if at all possible.

I'd agree with everything if this were a normal movie I'd what all that, but this movie has a build up of like 4 movies, so I don't want any character development for any 1 character that's for their own movies.

The team should be brough together as soon as possible, I wanna see them develop and interact with each other, I wanna see them be a team.

No, no. I didn't mean that the movie should be like 4 movies in one with each one of the characters having an own story until they reassemble at the very end of the movie. The movie should be about how they're being brought back together, especially with SHIELD rejecting the idea of a superhero team, given the aftermath of what happened in the first movie. Of course, I think they should interact, but they're not the team they were in the first movie anymore. Well, that's my opinion.

Oh, the Avengers was big was it? After all the hype about the film being made and its release, it went very quiet.
But that won't stop them making a second one, I just hope that the team of writers learnt from the mistakes made for the crappy sequel to Iron Man.
On another thought, will there be any references to Buffy in Avengers 2?

I'm not at all talking about making them like the Nolan Batman movies. Nolan's Batman movies are good movies, but poor comic book movies. Making The Avengers like that wouldn't work. And I don't think they're dark, except maybe Batman Begins.
In the first movie, there wasn't even a doubt that the Avengers would succeed and save the world. If it's going to be exactly the same in the second movie, only with a different villain, it's gonna suck big time, in my opinion. I think they should struggle and fall and have problems. That's way more interesting to me. That's what would make The Avengers 2 better than the first one.

I have no expectations. As always I believe in Joss and I know whatever he'll come up with will be excellent.

There's only one thing I don't want to see... Wolverine. I'll be very disappointed if they get Wolverine in the team, we've seen way enough of him already.

Well, that's not my opinion. To me he's dead. I saw him die in the movie. No matter what kind of excuse they're coming up with if they're bringing him back, it's going to be a pretty lame-ass one for sure, in my opinion.
Fury clearly lied about the cards that had Coulson's blood on them, however, everything in the movie suggests to me that he didn't lie about the fact that he's dead.

There's only one thing I don't want to see... Wolverine. I'll be very disappointed if they get Wolverine in the team, we've seen way enough of him already.

Don't worry, he won't be in it. Fox has the X-Men rights. I would like to see him in it, but I know that you can't stand any more of him 😉
