I'm a huge fan of comics and the Buffyverse but unfortunately, I never got the opportunity to delve into Fray a book about the future of the Buffyverse. The Axe, the weapon of the slayer, first appeared here. I wanted to know what are its powers?

Apparently its able to empower the slayer or something. I was wondering how come Buffy was never told about it? How did she find out about it? Was it one of the clues that came out of Principal Wood's mother's slayer "bag of tricks?" Did Buffy find out about the axe from the Shadow Men from the strange spinning carousel?

I love Fray. Unfortunatly, to my knowledge, the answers werent given on the show or in the comic.

This is certainly how it appears on Buffy, with the "scythe" she's able to defeat the Turok Hans almost effortlessly and she can feel "power" coming from it, not to mention what Willow was able to do with it. However, in Fray, they're not as specific about it's attributes. While Melaka is more efficient while using it, there's not much about it's "power".

Apparently, the last remaining Guardian (the one who explained it to Buffy) was one of many who "watched the watchers". The "scythe" was created to slay the last pure demon that walked the earth. I guess that since, as Anya established in Graduation Day, the only demons that still walk the earth are impure and tainted, there was no longer a purpose for it, or for Buffy to know about it... until the Turok Han came a callin', a pure demon.

She found out about it from Spike. He and Andrew had gone to an old monestary and on the wall in latin (which Spike had been schooled in before he was turned), was something explaining that there was a weapon that had been forged "for her alone to wield". He and Buffy assumed that this would be at the winery, as that was where Caleb was. So then Buffy went there and "King Arthured it" out of a giant rock. That's how she found out about it's existence, but it's purpose and history was explained to her by the last of many guardians, who had created it and "hid it" and hid themselves also, they were "the last surprise".

No, it had nothing to do with the "slayer's emergency kit" and the Shadow Men had nothing to do with it, infact they knew nothing about it seeing as the Guardians had "forged it in secrecy and kept it hiden from the Shadow men".

Hope that clears things up a little. I think that what happened with the whole deal is that Joss intruduced the "scythe" (not really a scythe) in Fray and then needed to fit it into Buffy somehow to give some continuity to the mythology of the slayerverse.

LOL-I liked your description of the scythe-I'm doing this for N4H! :D
The board won't let me add to your reputation score a second time, so I'll just have to settle for saying in a post; That's a really good explanation of the scythe Kindred.

Scythe Matters

Although I've never read Fray, the story of the scythe is very fascinating. And how does the scythe reach Fray in the future if apparently there was no need for Slayers for a very long time?

A demon named Urkon comes to Fray from the demon dimension. He acts as her watcher. The real watchers have been driven mad.

Urkon brings Fray the scythe in episode 6. He tells her of the scythe,

It is a weapon forged eons ago for the slayer alone, lost for centuries

We never discover where the scythe has been during that time.

Fray was a comic book mini series written by Joss Whedon himself, it focussed on a newly called slayer named Melaka Fray in a future where magick and demonkind had been banished from the Earth dimension, only Vampires called Lurks remained but never in large enough numbers for a slayer to be needed until Fray. It ran for 8 issues (now collected into a graphic novel) and had a short story in the Tales of the Slayer graphic novel as well. Melaka gained the Sycthe as nerd4hire said from a demon named Urkonn who was acting as her Watcher.

It is available in the UK, I got the issues individually from a comic shop but Amazon.co.uk seem to be selling it, the link below should be straight to it.

The ax thingy

Could someone explain what the ax thing was and what willow did with it? I didnt exactly watch it the whole way through. :wiggle:

The axe was made pre Christian times by a group of woman who wanted to help the slayer. These woman were sort of watching the watchers lol, without them knowing.
Willow used the essence of the axe to make all the potential slayers in the world, actual slayers. Therefore, mucho slayage all around the world. That also exlained the appearance of a slayer in Angel, Dana 🙂
