This is the final mission of Buffy Anne Summers, vampire slayer, the "Chosen One" of the late twentieth and early twenty first century. For seven long years, she fought against vampires and other eldritch threats to the world's supernatural security, against untold menaces. It is a story of redemption for some, vengeance for one, sacrifice and loss for others. Here, then, is the last day that she served and what happened to her and her legacy.

And that night, on both sides of the morality barrier, they had visitors.
Buffy regained lucidity in a forest, with an entourage of slayers past and present assembled in a clearing. And standing amidst them was the man who had been her first love, a vampire with a soul. Liam O'Connor. Angel. She closed the distance in a manner of instants:
"I've missed you so much," Buffy sobbed, "after Los Angeles, I wanted to call you so often, but a minute later I realised that this time, you were gone forever."
"The Powers That Be granted me this one visit. I'm afraid that after this, you won't see me again, Buffy. I'm sorry. Things will happen that will make that impossible."
"So where are you now. Apart from all this?"
"It's not a straightforward heaven and hell situation. Turns out the Catholics are right- I'm in Purgatory, until the sins that I committed as Angelus are expiated and I get promoted upward. As for not seeing me again...I can't transgress the preordained."
"It's just enough to see you again, Liam. Even if it feels like I've found my forever lover with Lindsey."
"Yeah. If I had to lose to someone, it's good it was him. Poor sucker deserved a break after he deserted Wolfram and Hart. Buffy...at some point during the forthcoming battle, someone will have to make a heart-breaking decision. Don't try and stop it. Accept it."
"If it's me, it's me. I've been resurrected twice. If this is fate, so be it. I've had a good run as vampire slayer."
Angel said nothing. Buffy looked up: "Liam, I need some time away from all that. Can we just sit here and talk? Although, the earlier slayers...?"
"They have something to tell you, Buffy. Later, we can talk." And because Buffy Summers always valued her duty, she sat and began talking to her sisters before the time she was called. She wondered why there were no future slayers present for a moment. But after she awoke, she was glad she'd talked.

Willow's dream was somewhat different. Apart from her parents, there was only one person whom she wanted to see more than anything else in the world. And in the same forest, she turned and saw: "Xander! Come here, you big lug!"
"Oof! Hey, red haired witch lady. Look, I've come to bring interesting tidings."
"Are you in heaven?"
"Well, cleanness, wholeness and feeling at peace, so yup. Tell Dougster that I like his style, also his humility. I think we would have been good friends if I stayed around. Despite being manlier than me, but I'm out of the picture and everyone misses me, so good for him. Okay, I didn't see Oz jumping the shark but I'm happy for him too. Also, Tara being pregnant- you'll be great moms."
"Is that a spoiler? Does it mean I make it? Because I'm not sure I deserve to, given what happened last year."
"You didn't kill anyone, Wills. You just got addicted, but you pulled out in time. And given my family, I can't really judge. And Buffy...look, someone's going to come up. Something bad. You're going to have to deal with it. It'll break your heart. But there'll be other people around you to help you deal with it."
"Xander, what sort of witch am I to let someone like Amy to do so much damage?"
"Uh, as your current best guy friend would say, a witch who stopped herself in time when it came to her former addiction to darkmagick. We both know Amy is gonna have to pay for what she's done. And Wills? Never doubt there are people up here cheering you on.

INTERDIMENSIONAL SPACE:

As Amy Madison was making her final entry to Earth's universe, she was abruptly shoved sideways: "What the hell-?"
"You got that right, honey..." Standing in her way was a black and white clad figure, her hair whipping around her, her eyes filled with white energy. Madison recognised who it was at once:
"Sammy Dykstra."
"Hekate. The name's Hekate. And you don't seem pleased to see me."
"I think I preferred you when you were a darkmage. Which you aren't now, are you?"
"Nah, turns out I'm a demigoddess. Now, you were planning to nix Drusilla and Huntress Investigations after you were finished with the slayer? Ain't gonna happen."
"I get to kill someone and their main squeeze. That's predestined."
"Uh, guess what? It doesn't turn out the way you want, babe."
"Enough of this, brat. Get out of my way."
"Like hell." And with that, celestial battle was joined.

SUNNYDALE:
Even immortals can dream. And so it was that Lindsey MacDonald walked through a forest clearing to witness a hauntingly familiar figure. She turned and faced him, tentatively smiling: "Lindsey."
"Darla? Of all people, why would the powers that be send you?"
"Primarily because Buffy is talking to my no-good childer at the moment. Everyone seems to be getting eve of battle dreams, good or otherwise. So I was assigned to talk things over with you. Incidentally, I'm happy things worked out for one of us, at least."
"I know you never loved me. I was hopelessly out of my league there, wasn't I?"
"Lindsey, you're not the only one who had unrequited desire in that whole triangle. I had a one-night stand with big and broody and the consequence was that I got knocked up. And for what?! Connor died and it drove Angel to become Angelus one final time. But look at you- immortal sword wielder. And you're an item with the slayer. Who does love you back. Which I should be antsy about, but I'm out of that now. I'm glad it worked out for one of us, at least. And about the whole 'out of my league' number? Not after you became who you are now. Why else did you think you were off the menu when I had that pack of Wolfram and Hart lawyers for dinner with Drusilla? That sip I took from you had latent immortality genes in it. From that moment on, I knew what you'd become. One other thing. Something is going to change after the forthcoming battle."
"Too cryptic, Darla. I'd defy heaven and hell for Buffy. You know that."
"It's complicated, Lindsey. As you'll see when it happens. Time to go. Incidentally, I'm in what Dante would have called 'light' Hell, the City of Dis."
"If I could get you out of there, I would."
"It's where I deserve to be. I was surprised that I didn't end up deeper down."
"It's been a long time. Can we sit down and talk about old times?"

In Doug's dream, he was startled to see the last person he had ever expected:
"Dad?!"
Rupert Giles walked over from the shadows: "Hello, son. It's good to see Alessandra finally told you."
"Get over here so I can hug you. Why? Why did you never tell me? Was it because I was an accident...?"
"Gods, no. The real problem is that I had numerous enemies from my past life who would have taken it out on you before you were ready. Which you are, now. You've become an excellent Watcher and a disciplined and effective mage. I'm proud of you for looking after Buffy for the last year after I died."
"This is all very the Scottish play, isn't it? Are the others getting visited by ghosts of loved ones from their past?"
"Yes, actually. Buffy got Angel, Lindsey got Darla, Willow is lumbered with Xander and Oz got Jordan. And we get to spend the father/son time. Doug... I yearned to acknowledge you were my son. It was a surprise when you turned up at the Watchers Institute, but when Alessandra told me about the blood test match, and how you were wounded in the first place, I realised that whatever else had happened, you were a Giles in every aspect but name. And you proved that, over and over. I loved you then and I always will. Look, something... will happen. The others will need you."
"If that means the time has come..."
"I can't say anything else. Except don't be in a hurry to throw it away. What you have with Daniel is precious and pure. It's what I never had in life. For some reason, it always eluded me."
"I've missed you, Dad. More than I can say."
"I wish we'd had more time together. We both have an overblown sense of duty to others, don't we?"
"Despite everything that's happened to you, you've remained a loving, caring person. You are truly my son."

Alongside him, a small form barrelled into Oz's dreamself:
"Jordy?!"
"Hi, cuz. Wow, you and Dougster are a couple?"
"Uh, not Dougster. Only Willow and Buffy get to call him that. If I try it, tickling happens."
"Hey, tell him he wasn't to blame for what happened, huh? And neither were you."
"If Gib Cain hadn't followed my trail back to the 'Dale, you'd still be alive, Jordy. That's something I'll have to live with."
"We all make mistakes. Uh, Danny? I'm here for a reason. Look, tomorrow, two of you won't make it."
"I almost lost him once, Jordy. I won't do it again. Even if I have to get in the path of silver to do it. He doesn't die tomorrow."
"Then who does?"
"I can't say. I'm banned from doing so. "
"I've missed you, Jordy. Cain murdered you in cold blood, long before your time. You should have had the chance to grow up, fall in love and have a family, all the stuff that he took from you."
"Well, he's burning in hell for it now. And, Danny? Next time we talk, bring Dougie with you so I can thank him for looking after mum and dad."
"Ah hah. Spoilers?"
"I'd better stop now. Give me a hug and we'll talk again."

And the Scoobies awoke, refreshed and hopeful, on what would be the last day of their lives for two of them.

PART FOUR:
Battered and bleeding from her conflict with Hekate, and in considerably depleted condition insofar as their even match in terms of capabilities went, Amy Madison gathered her remaining defensive energies together as Hekate took up position above Los Angeles and the Hyperion, ready to respond again if her beloved foster mother and the others within Huntress Investigations were harmed by the sorceress.

Exhausted, Amy slept. But her dreams were not good ones. Lilah Morgan was the first to arrive:
"Wretch. Your betrayal cost us a toehold in this dimension. And look at you now."
"Who asked your opinion, Morgan? I don't remember requesting a metaphorical cockroach infestation. And are your precious Senior Partners that worried that I'll do what they never could accomplish and destroy the slayer and her accomplices utterly?"
"You haven't worked it out yet, have you? Are you that stupid? You won't make it. You'll die in the attempt."
"This is ridiculously derivative, incidentally. Does William Shakespeare know you're plagiarising the plot of Macbeth? Last time I looked there was no Dunsinane Wood in the vicinity of Sunnydale. Or will I be attacked by walking trees when I touch down? And hey, even if I do die, I'll take Summers. Rosenberg, Mercer. Osborne and MacDonald with me? I thought you had a hate on for Lindsey at least?"
"Oh, I give up. You're an incorrigible nihilist little fool and you deserve everything that's about to befall you. Good riddance."

Her second visitor was also familiar- her mother, Catherine Madison:
"Oh. Hello, mother. I thought you were still trapped in that statue, buried deep below the current incarnation of Sunnydale High. Is this going to be another harangue? Because you tried to usurp my life, remember? Apart from inheriting and improving on your witchcraft reportoire, I owe you very little. So what is it? Oooh. Am I going to die tomorrow? Because Queen Lilah the Undead has already told me that. I've got the power you never had the guts or inclination to achieve." Her mother said nothing, but pointed instead to a blazing conflagration below her and then turned away without a world.

The third one was also a figure from her past: "Warren, babe. It's been a long time."
"You treacherous bitch. You stole the abilities that were supposed to belong to all of us."
"Oh shut up, you pathetic nerdish supervillain wannabe. Look, I'll grant you saved me a lot of time by red-pencilling Giles and Spike, but face it, you and blondie wouldn't have survived long anyway. And frankly, when I found out you'd killed Katrina Silber, did you really think I trusted you after that? Face it, hon. It was either me or you. And hey, it was me. And I've made better use of all of it than you would have. Even if I die tomorrow, I've still got enough mojo to splatter the slayer and her misfits across most of Sunnydale. So, ghost of idiot boyfriend past, go back to hell, literally."
"You do realise you'll join Andy and me there shortly?"
"Well, there has to be some downside to it, doesn't there? Now go away. And frankly, this whole accusatory ghost plotline is getting seriously old."

But belying all of that, Amy Madison woke up in a cold sweat, aware that this would indeed be her last day on Earth. She resumed her descent to the Earth, marshalling her remaining energies for one final, apocalyptic conflict.

Buffy Summers would die.

PART FIVE:
When Buffy and the others awoke, the sun was shining on a virtually deserted Sunnydale as Willow finished a telepathic conversation with Tara about how her pregnancy was faring in distant Westbury, across half a world in Southern England. Doug pointed to a distant, roiling cloudbank: "Here she comes. Looks like she's going to touch ground in Hammerfell Park. Looks like our aversion spell did the trick, Wills."
"Good idea, both of you. It has to be between Amy and us. No civilian bystanders." Buffy nodded.
Lindsey leant forward across the table and kissed Buffy deeply: "I love you, Buffy Summers."
"I love you, Lindsey MacDonald. Okay, everyone. Time to bring this whole story to an end. Let's do this..."

Significant release of thaumaturgic energy carries consequences with it and thus it was the day was already darkening when the Scoobies reached Hammerfell Park. Above them, amidst a darkening thunderhead silhouetted by lightning, Amy Madison stood, within a vortex of churning darkness. Willow rolled her eyes:
"What a drama queen."
"Can I have first strike, Buffy?" Anya cleared her throat and spoke.
"If you want revenge for what Amy helped to do to Xander, go right ahead, You have my wishes for vengeance."
Willow nodded: "And mine. She contributed to the murder of my best friend. I will never forgive her for that."
Doug and Oz consented too: "We want Jordy avenged too, Anya. Go, with our full blessing."
And thus, propelled and empowered by the desires of the bereaved, Anya rose steadily from the ground and hurtled toward Amy, who balked. She unleashed an array of lightning against the vengeance demon, but to no avail. Fury was firmly set upon Anya Emerson's face as she reached the fragile sanctuary of the thunderhead and began the battle with Amy. And thus, the final conflict began.

At that moment, a yellow and black blur rushed toward Doug as Oz wolfsided and moved to protect his life's love:
"Well, well. Touching, isn't this? My faggot big brother and his arse buddy."
At the cadence and accent of the bitter, snarling voice, Doug took a step back: "Lucy?!"
"You know this shapeshifter, loverman?:
"I thought you were dead, Lucy. What happened to you?"
"Like you even cared, Dougie. When Dad kicked you out, he was right. But afterwards? Did you even think that your lily white crusade would have consequences? It was because of you that vampires attacked our family, killed our parents. Oh, that's right. You're actually a bastard, aren't you, Doug? Because we're not good enough for you. So, when Amy up there offered me the chance to destroy you, I said bring it on. You and me. It ends with your death."
"Well, get you, Daddy's little girl," sneered Faith, carving an attacking demon in half with her blade, "from what Doug told the rest of us, his birth family was trash. Alcoholism, violence, all sorts of toxic shit. He doesn't have to answer to you."
"Loverman, she's got my skill set. And inexperience. I can smell it on her. She's only turned therio recently."
"I'm strong and vicious enough to kill you, arsewolf!" Lucy Mercer snarled, transforming further into a leopard, and stalking toward the two men. Oz dropped his shorts and became fully wolfside, launching himself toward the threat, intent on protecting the man he loved more than anything else in the world.

In the skies above, Anya and Amy were locked in a fierce struggle. But both had limited resources and it was starting to tell. Ultimately, Anya began to visibly tire- but did so valiantly, witnessing the further ebbing of Amy's darkmagick as the conflict wore on. Minutes later, with Anya bloody and panting, Amy's antigravity spell failed without sufficient energies to keep her aloft and she managed, with effort, to slow her descent to a mild bump on her tokus when she did impact.
Through the fog of battle, Buffy, Lindsey and Dawn were busily dispatching onrushing demons as they swarmed from the adjacent Hellmouth. And then, gliding above it, amidst almost blinding light, was Willow Rosenberg:
"Hello, Amy. Or should I say the First?"
"Rosenberg. I might have guessed it'd be you."
"I almost feel sorry for you. Except you've killed too many people and you feel no remorse or guilt for it. Including my parents and Xander Harris. And a little boy. But then, to feel some sense of accountability would mean you were still human, and you're not, are you? Not even remotely."
"I don't need to listen to a castrated witch who let her abilities be deliberately limited because she didn't have the guts to face the glory and splendor of power incarnate."
Willow shook her head: "Sorry, honey. Defensive power still carries a lot of oomph in it. And the light will always master the darkness."
"Enough talking!" Amy marshalled her remaining energies and an ebon spear of darkmagick swept toward Willow, darker than midnight. Willow gestured and it split into shards but Amy was not done. And with that, the two women arose, hurling energies older than time and space at one another.

Circling as his sister fought the man he loved, Doug could tell Lucy was starting to tire as his lover gained the upper hand. The female shapeshifter felt for a silver dagger, until it vaporised as Doug caught her tactic and acted to protect his partner. She snarled and with one last vestige of strength, threw Daniel Osborne off her and leapt toward him, intent on ripping out his throat. But she never got there- as Lindsey MacDonald's blade buried itself in her body. As he pivoted to defend Buffy, he called over to Doug: "Hell, I'm sorry, buddy."
Doug breathed shakily: "Don't be, Linz. You saved Danny's life. And Lucy made her choice some time ago. Family is what you choose, not what you're born into, sometimes. No hard feelings. Danny?"
"Doug. I wish that didn't have to happen."
"She's the past, Danny. She's not who I am now. Which is with you, the man I love and amongst my friends."

Sometimes, the outcome of battles can turn on a matter of chance. And thus it was, with a single prodigal outburst of energy, Amy Madison knocked Willow Rosenberg from the sky and the whitewitch's head impacted on a stone. And Buffy Summers found herself alone as Amy Madison picked up a discarded shield and broadsword from a fallen demon warrior and charged at the slayer, giving her no quarter. But Buffy Summers fought back as her lover saw the peril she was in and fought through a knot of warriors, as did Faith Lehane, her sister slayer. Helping a groggy Willow to her feet, Doug and Oz joined in the onrushing group of allies. But Buffy had been fighting for hours now. And with a victorious scream. Amy Madison fought a weak spot in the slayer's defence and thrust the blade home. Doug's eyes shone brilliant white, as did that of Willow and in that instant, the remaining demons were vaporised in a Sol Invictus sunburst. And then, reaching the woman he loved, Lindsey MacDonald's sword avenged what had been done to the woman he loved. With a hellish scream, Amy Madison cried out as the hellfire that had been her own for so long finally took her to its heart.

PART SIX:

And even though Amy Madison was finally dead, there was a confused, grieving knot of people on the battlefield that morning as the sun rose on a visibly dying Buffy Summers. As Lindsey held her in his arms, sobbing, Faith swallowed:
"Hell, no, B. It can't end like this. Not for you."
"Even if it means I die... I can't live without her. I won't. Doug? Willow? Jonathon? Can you transfer my lifeforce into her?"
"Mate, it'd kill you. And anyway, it's my job. I vowed to protect the slayer, come what may. If this is it, then I'm willing to make the sacrifice. Danny? I'm sorry. I love you more than anything else- Jonathon? What the hell-" Doug got no further as Jonathon threw immobilising dust over the two startled wiccans before they could resist him. Lindsey got up and slowly said: "Jonny? What the hell...?"
"It's something Alessandra Norton told us. Dawn and I."
"What? What are you talking about?"
"She read the Tarot, Lindsey. And the one at the Watchers Institute is the oldest one known to humanity, of supreme predictive power. Two people will sacrifice their lives to insure that this slayer meets her destiny."
Dawn nodded and knelt and kissed her sister: "It's been a beautiful few years, Buffy. But I was a mistake. When the Time Monks fashioned me and incorporated the Key into me, the timestuff sheared from you meant a particular capability was removed from you. You see, you were never meant to die. Without me, you would have long since become an immortal, like LIndsey here. For you to continue to exist, I have to end mine. I need to recapitulate myself back into your personal timeline to trigger that change."
"Dawnie, no!" Willow sobbed.
"Wait a minute. You said two people, Dawn."
"That's right, Doug. For Dawn to trigger the metamorphosis, she needs a wiccan to ground her. I know you two would have gladly done that but I couldn't let that happen. Tara or Oz would have had their hearts broken."
"Jonny, you'll die too."
"Yes, I will. But the alternative is unacceptable. Thank you for giving the chance to redeem myself."
"And Willow, Doug? Tell Buffy I loved her. I loved her so much." And then the moment was upon them, Jonathon grasped Dawn's hand and with the final effort of his wiccan abilities, sent his lifeforce coursing out of himself, into the body of the woman he loved more than anything else in the world. And as he died, falling to the ground, Dawn shone bright as her namesake, before a large green ankh ascended into the sky, symbolising the Key that she had held. And then, she slowly faded from existence. Doug and Willow found themselves able to move at long last, as Lindsey stood back while energies coursed around Buffy Summers as she fulfilled her destiny and underwent the Quickening. In that instant, Buffy Summers ceased to be a vampire slayer and achieved her true destiny... as an immortal.

As she blinked and gasped in her first breath of her new eternal life, Alessandra's telepathic voice echoed in their heads: "Willow? If you don't hurry, you'll miss your daughter's birth."

In Westbury, England, an hour later, the group stood around Tara MacLay's bed as Willow cradled her baby daughter in her arms. When Tara had finished crying over Dawn's sacrifice, she gripped Buffy's hand: "We had decided to name her Alexandra, but Willow and I have agreed a second name is in order because of someone else we loved dearly. Say hello to your goddess-mother., Alexandra Dawn."
"So what now?" Buffy asked.
"Well, the glitch that arose after you died the first time and resulted in Faith's ascendance to slayage has been fixed, so she gets to be the sole slayer. The energies that the First used to enter our dimension resulted in a phase shift, so the Sunnydale Hellmouth has closed forever. And as for you, Buffy and Lindsey, you get to spend the rest of history together. And Doug, Willow, Tara, Oz? There's a place for you here at the Watcher's Institute. There'll be a lot of changes here from now on." Alessandra said.

And billions of years in the future, Buffy Summers and Lindsay MacDonald watched from a distant spaceship as the Earth vaporised when the Sun went nova and the recalled moment of her rebirth all those millions of years in the distant past ended. Hand in hand, they walked away from those treasured memories of long-dead but still cherished friends.
