The Body

This episode is just amazing, everytime I watch it I tear up everytime I watch it. This episode is filled of amazing moments like Buffy first finding her mom, to Willow/Tara, Anya's monolouge, and Dawn finding out. I am able to full out admit I cried like a little baby when I saw this at age 11. This episode and its actor's all should've earned Emmy's for their roles.

the episode : The Body, wel that episode i like and hate both together....
i like how the cast brings it over to us. how they feel, how they handle it....that's the most realitsic moments that's close to the real world.....🙁

but on the other hand....i hate it too...
i really felt like i lost my own mother...depressing.....
i felt myself helpless when i saw that episode...🙁

i think, when its all about emotions.. i think this is the best episode ever.... of course nothing beats ''the Gift''😉

I keep watching this episode, I watch it all the time. Funny thing, I recently went to watch it with the commentary and I was like "there's no way I can cry when I'm listening to Joss Whedon talk over it". God, was I wrong. I cried almost more just watching and feeling what he was saying about the artistry. It's amazing. Just thought I'd comment.

The best word I can use to describe this episode for me would simply be masterpiece. Everything about it was perfect, never has death been dealt with so bluntly and realistically on TV and it was just a spot on episode, one of the most emotional ever seen on TV imo. Really bums me out though because it is so depressing and I don't like to watch it for that reason but it is an absolute classic. Certainly shows that they done their job right though.

I don't like to watch this episode. It really upsets me. I've seen it once, and I don't want to watch it again, but I'll watch it with Jenn sometimes. Have to have someone there to share the tissues with.

Besides that, it's beautifully done.

^ I think she was trying to stay strong for Dawn.

she was in shock. thinking 'i have to be strong so i can't cry' won't make you not cry. it doesn't work like that. i think they explained it really well in "forever"

DAWN: Mom died, and it's like you don't even care.

BUFFY: Of course I care! How can you even think that?

DAWN: How can I not? You haven't even cried. You've just been running around like it's been some big chore. Cleaning up after Mom's mess.

(Buffy slaps her)

BUFFY: Dawn, I've been working, I've been busy because I *have* to...

DAWN: No, you've been avoiding me!

BUFFY: I'm not! I have to do these things, 'cause, 'cause when I stop, then she's really gone. And I'm trying, Dawn, I am really trying to take care of things. But I don't even know what I'm doing! Mom always knew.

And people do weird things when a loved one dies. I cried more over my first girlfriend of three years dumping me, yet the pain of my missing my grandfather is still there after 16 years. I don't think I cried much because I had to be strong for my mom and sister back in 1994, yet I was thinking of him and cried just last week.

I commented on "I don't get the love for the body" but I need to add one thing for this episode, and that is that Kristen Sutherland as Joyce was AMAZING this season. The Body is a perfect sendoff to one of my favorite characters. 🙂

Agree! It's hard to believe she's really human and really alive in some of those scenes.
I was happy with "The Body" because Joyce was one of the characters I never appreciated until she was gone. There were moments when I hated Joyce (the end of season 2) and moments where I loved her, and Kristine Sutherland's performance only added to the awesomeness

One thing I was a little uneasy about was Joyce didn't get her final climactic moment before her death like Jenny did, but I was still happy the way everything happened

Ok once again I am the odd ball in this thread. I am not a big fan of this episode. I DO like it but I find it to be very weird. Its just an OK episode. Not one of my favorites. It kinda bored me.

My favorite thing about this episode is Anya's speech.

Love anyas speech!
I just watched it again last night. I really focused on Dawn's reactions. Her acting is simply amazing.

I'm rewatching Season 5 and just finished The Body. When Buffy breaks it to Dawn, it always gives me a tinge.

Have to say, I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as I did before given the opinions on here about it, but I still found it riveting. Great acting all round.

Loved Tara in this, the more I rewatch the show the more I realise she was a bit of a rock for the scoobies. 🙂

I'M WATCHING IT WITH MY MOM TONIGHT! Sorry for the caps I'm just so excited! I know she's going to love it! She loves sad things that make her cry. She said if she likes this, she'll watch Buffy on her Spring Break with m e! The WHOLE series! I've been wanting to watch the series with someone else for the longest time so I can re-live my first watch through them. Yay for my mommy!!!! And this will be great because every time I watch it I call my mom so I can know that she's alive and hear her because it brings up a fear that she'll die early... and now I'm going to be able to SEE her and HUG her during it! OOH I'm so happy! I'll be back in this thread to post how it goes later tonight!

I got my mom into Buffy a few years ago. It's really great being able to talk to her about it. :)
It's definitley not the kind of episode you can have playing in the background, once I've put it on I'm glued. They did a great way of portraying grief and shock in this episode, Willow and the jumper always gets me.

This episode is so amazing, it's actually hard to sit through because it's just THAT real. You can just feel the emotions from your own life creep up on you when watching this episode. It's so beautiful.

This episode was utterly painful and heartbreaking for me. I mentioned in my check-in thread earlier that this episode is impossible for me to watch without Joss' commentary playing. And in fact, I really don't watch the screen very much while that commentary is running.

The episode hits me so hard because I lost my mother when I was 12. Everything in this episode, everyone's reactions, I too have felt exactly the same. The tantrum, the fear, the pain, the confusion, the trying to make sense of everything... I even pulled a Willow on picture day at school that year (barely a week later) and wore an outfit just because my mom loved it on me. Everything from Joyce's death really resonated in me. Minus the vampire in the morgue, obviously.

I think Joss did THE BEST job in portraying the death of a loved one in a television series. The dialogue, the lack of music, the fantasy of saving her, the camera's odd focus or being out of focus to express the way Buffy and her family's minds couldn't focus on what happened... All beautifully done, and I truly believe that no one could or will ever do a job to do it justice.
