Was it Jerry Pournelle? His is the name that's just sprung to mind. If I'm right, he's published a couple of (at least) collaborations with Larry Niven.

Yeah that's the guy. I don't even remember that much about the book, I just remember it got me wired on the more sciencey science fiction for a while.
