In a lucid dream.
Just heard about this and have been watching the live stream from BBC. Just horrible that someone could do this at such a beautiful event that is a marathon, and on patriots day. I'm not saying I'm not surprised that they chose this day, but it doesn't make it any less appalling.

My heart goes out to those who suffered in anyway from this attack! Stay strong! ::heart::

I've been following it today since it happened. Just horrible. It's kind of a miracle that the body count is so low, but some of the casualties who have survived are pretty horrific. I've read that ten people so far have lost limbs.

And it's just amazing that no one was injured when the JFK Presidential Library was bombed.

I've been following it rather obsessively as well - the only reason I'm not right now is that HIMYM is on.

As for the JFK library, that wasn't bombed - it was an unrelated fire that had the unfortunate timing of being at the same time as the actual bombs going off.

Are you sure? This was from the Boston Herald three hours ago:

Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said earlier today "a third incident "” explosion "” was at the JFK Library" on Columbia Point. But he said that information could be "premature."

Davis stressed: "We are not certain that these incidents are related, but we are treating them as if they are."

I haven't seen anything updated since then, but it's very possible I could have missed it. It sounds from the tone of the quote that the Boston PD haven't ruled one way or the other on it, but that it was an explosion.

It's consistently referred to as a fire, not an explosion, and they have no evidence of the two being connected. Also, both CNN and CBS repeated multiple times over a couple hours that the two didn't seem to be related. It seems to be a matter of terribly unfortunate timing. Though, there could always be new evidence that comes out and proves they're related, but so far we don't have that.

EDIT: Another source saying that they seem to be unconnected: http://espn.go.com/boston/story/_/i...-boston-marathon-police-say?utm_source=feedly

Huh. That's very poor reporting then by the Herald.

Honestly, I feel most bad about the people of brown/Arab/Pakistani etc etc etc. decent (I'm generalizing because it doesn't matter which race you are, if your skin is brown, some idiot racist will associate you with those attacks). Unfortunately, events like this makes it very hard for people of different cultures with brown skin and it makes me incredibly sad. I know this absolutely won't be the case on BB, as I feel we're smarter than to judge races by one act decided by a governmental terrorist attack, but sadly a lot of people are very quick to judge and racism will ensue from acts like this one. My heart does truly go to the victims and the family, but also to all those people that will get the backlash from a stupid governmental conspiracy.

I have a few good friends that are Arab, and even at my school that is set in a very open minded Canadian city, I hear a lot of racism towards that race, whether it be the way they treat the woman, or terrorist attacks and Al Qaeda, and it pains me to see civilians have to pay for the actions of others, and that goes for both sides of the party.
It truly is sad, as my closest Arabian friend is the nicest, kindest man I've ever meant and now I have to think of the fact that he may experience some hatred fallowing this event.

Conclusion being that this is 100% a political issue, Americans aren't so guilt free either, and as awful the terrorist attacks are, it's not so black and white, let's not forget that the States have also done some pretty awful things to other countries in the past (as did every country pretty much, just to make it clear I'm not hating on America here). Bottom line is, no civilians should ever have to pay, and it truly is a shame that people have died, or that lives have been changes, for issues that the general public has no power of.

NO ONE has even mentioned Arab's being involved. They still do not know who is resposinble for this attack. I find your statement insensitive and ignorant to be honest.
Blaze,

But we don't even know at all if this is a political thing yet, or just some nut. No one has claimed responsibility for it and the only real implication of who is responsible I've read about is an anonymous "government analyst" who spoke to the L.A. Times a few hours ago who mused that his theory is that this is the work of a Boston-area extremist group inspired by Al-Queda. This is from the article:

A senior U.S. counter-terrorism official said no evidence currently linked the bombing to any specific group or individuals, and no intelligence suggested an international connection.

You know, sometimes you have to sit and go, enough is enough. I was at work when I found out about the attacks. At first I didn't even think it was terrorists, I thought it was just another sicko. To bomb a marathon? Didn't sound like a terrorist would target something like that. It seems like every day, you hear a new horror story. Bombs, shootings, massacres. I honestly don't know what to think of this. You get to a point where the news is still shocking, but after you've heard that same line: "Bombings in Boston, shootings in Connecticut", you, unfortunately, become immune to it. And I don't want to become immune to this. This shouldn't be happening, especially at an alarming rate like this. I just wonder will when this ever end?

My heart goes out to the 3 victims (maybe more, as days go by), and all of those who were injured.

I agree about the feeling of being "immune" to it, it truly is sad, and unfortunately true

I know they've said that, but watching the news earlier today, they kept referring to a "brown" suspicious man in a van. In the end, it might end up being a completely unrelated event to any political movement, but media is already blaming people of color. I'm sure they don't do it on purpose (to a certain extent), but they clearly said that on TV, and people that don't have the common sense to look up or make a fallow-up on the events will be associating it to such things, even if it is untrue. My problem here is that people ARE coming up with those theories which for now, are not proven at all, this is a prime example that our society is jumping to conclusion because of racism. It may or may not end up being an Al Qaeda inspired terrorist attack, but the fact that people are already postulating that it is goes to show how the world works.

@Little Miss Muffet : I'm sorry if I didn't explain myself properly, my point was not that they said they were involved, it was that some people that don't bother to check the news will think that they were. This is absolutely despicable, and trust me it makes me really mad that it is like that, but I've already heard a few people around me make references. Like I said, I have friends of many races and I see what they have to go through and the racism that still occurs, it is an awful thing, but people are already making assumptions. What I said was not a statement that it was a terrorist attack, on the contrary, I'm trying to say that from experience, people are jumping to conclusion and I HATE it.

My prayers are with the people in Boston. I am so glad my cousin's husband isn't one to travel to the US for marathons...

What bugs me though is that I keep hearing journalists saying "there were a lot of people injured, blood everywhere, arms and legs here and there...." Yeah, I get the picture, I don't want a complete detailed story of the injuries. I am already feeling bad for the people who were there, I don't need to throw up for them....
*stupid sensationalist news people*

My heart goes out to all the people affected!

I followed it a lot last night because I know a couple of people from that area (they're fine) and in my search for info I accidentally stumbled across a horrendous photo of a guy who'd had his leg blown off. Why do people feel the need to post that? I know it's horrible that it happened and I do feel for the guy but seriously, spreading those pics around? Horrible! And as selfish as it sounds, I am now creeped out for life!

My prayers go out to all those killed or injured and their families as well. It's so awful that things like this happen.

Yeah I thought the same, it didn't seem big enough to be a terrorist attack.

The media response is terrible, they clearly don't know anything and just chucked their reports out there. For hours yesterday it was reported as 3 bombs not 2, and they kept referring to it as a terror attack, clearly to get as close as possible to the word terrorist without using the word!

It seemed like the response to it was excellent though, it's being reported (although that might not mean anything) that there was at least 2 unexploded bombs dismantled and removed.
It seemed like they had the cellular network shut down pretty fast, and from pictures they had other cities (saw pics of New York) on response and ready really quick.

The whole thing could have been a lot worse, which is not to say it was horrendous but it was reassuring to see the response and low(ish) causality count.

That's what I meant in my original post, media coverage is awful

Right.

I think that's probably on purpose, because terrorist connotes something different (ie Al Qaeda) where an act of terror connotes both domestic and foreign, which they don't yet know.

This whole thing has freaked me out a bit. Last night I just kept thinking, "Boston? Boston?" I just couldn't understand how it could happen. I know Boston well, I have a lot of friends there and watching the news and seeing a place you are familiar with, a street you've walked down, be blown up just feels different than attacks that you have no real personal connection with. Thankfully, I was able to contact my friends and everyone is safe and well.

The reporting is so bad because they haven't a clue who did it. Personally, I don't think it is Al Qaeda. It doesn't have any of their usual M.O. I could be utterly wrong but to me it presents more like domestic terrorism, especially that bombs were small. Al Qaeda usually go for much bigger bombs with much more potential for maximum causalities. Plus, they would have claimed it. When Al Qaeda executes a terrorist attack they want the world to know they did it, especially when that attack is on the United States.

Mostly, my heart goes out to the people there that were killed and hurt. A marathon is a family day. It's fun, it's safe. At least they used to be.

You're in my thoughts, Boston.

the "Boston? Boston?" part was a bit sad to read
we had a morning meeting today and one of my coworkers and friends had described how his younger daughter , who was at the finish line , stumbled around in the smoke and debris looking for a friend , who was later discover to have lost both her legs. she saw a little girl without a hand and many people just lacerated and bleeding. My son's friend was running as well, but thankfully he was not close to the explosion. There are some speculations that this can be domestic - yesterday was a final tax deadline day as well as Patriots Day here in Massachusetts. We are supposedly one of the most liberal state in the country, so there are speculations on local radio this can be right wing related. I am not leaning one way or another. It is disgusting either way. I only know they found the third bomb and it had ball bearings in it. And whoever did this was aiming to maim as much as to kill, because it is a marathon , I guess, so they tried to make sure some of these folks never run again. sorry, I am just a bit too emotional today to be rational.

When the Oklahoma City bombing occurred, the first arrests were Iranian diaspora whereas the bomber was American. The US has been the land of liberty since 1776 but the land of the witchhunt since 1692. Old habits die hard.

Ah right, I thought it was just trying to use the word terrorist even though it hadn't been confirmed yet, hadn't realised it had that kind of meaning of it.

The pictures of this are horrific, I've never seen pictures that depict such violence, like blood spattered on the ground, for something like this.
