Question The Bronze

If you lived in the Buffyverse i.e Sunnydale and you werent a Scooby and knew nothing about the supernatural world would you keep going back to the Bronze despite all the weird, wacky, dangerous and life threatning things that just seem to happen there with the harvest,triangle and doppleganger as just a few episode examples.

I know its like one of the only places to hang in Sunnydale but is it really worth it? Ive just always been really curious because its never seemed to put a damper on Bronze business but then again if youre living in Sunnydale and go to Sunnydale High on top of a hell mouth home of the supernatural maybe you're just oblivious or lack self preservation because weird stuff happen all around the town e.g Hush, personally I would move even if I could never comprehend what was wrong with the town.

Good point. Even with the shaky attempts to explain away all the crap that keeps going down there, it is a little surprising that it's still so popular.

I always kind of wondered in the high school seasons why there weren't more house parties, actually.

Hell no! In the real world, people tend to avoid places with a bad reputation, unless they are looking for trouble. Assuming that you believe the flimsy excuses to explain away the strange happenings, the place would have an awful reputation so people would stay clear. Not to mention that no parent in their right mind would let their children go there.

Um, no. LOL All it would take would be a couple times of seeing something freaky in front of me and I'd be staying in my house as much as possible. LOL

Well it depends. Someone who has been born and raised in Sunnydale should certainly at least expect strange things to happen. Plus, the Bronze is pretty much the only place to have fun in Sunnydale if you aren't legal yet.

Now if someone has moved to Sunnydale and started going to the Bronze and noticed the strange activity going on (and anything else going on in the city), they would probably run back to wherever they came from...

What really makes me laugh is that despise the fact that every Sunnydale citizen seems to know that weird stuff happens, they are always taken completely by surprise whenever they get attacked by a new monster XD

Several things to consider,first and foremost being the almost universal state of denial the general population seems to be in. It's not as bad as it was with Glory, and there are significant exception, like the Scoobies, Riley's Initiative squad, and probably some others that I have forgotten, but it seemed that the general population just didn't have a clue as to what was going on in and around the Bronze.

Also, except for Willie's Demon bar, just about the only other night spots in Sunnydale were a beer bar where, if you made him mad, the owner drugged his beer and turned you into a cave man, and a restaurant at the end of a vampire infested alley that Buffy didn't even know existed until Robin Wood took her there to dinner.

Basically, if you had any plans of going out in Sunnydale, the Bronze, even with all of its unusual goings on, would seem to be the safest place to be. And note, I said safEST, not safe.

So, yeah, if I lived in Sunnydale, the Bronze would have to be my watering hole. But you could be sure that I would be armed whenever I went there. A stake, a 45 automatic loaded with silver bullets, a 12 inch Bowie knife, and a flask full of holy water at a minimum. The White Avenger ain't goin' down without a struggle.

I personally most likely would still go. I'm only assuming this because there has been a few stabbing at my favorite bar and I still go. Now I know it's a bit different, but in real life I choose not to live my life in fear of something happening because I'm located in the "bad neighbourhood". Now my city isn't all evil like Sunnydale lol, but there is quite a high population that lives on the street, and just to give you an idea, I use to live by a crack house and both my neighbours dealt drugs. Now of course it's not all bad, and I love my city, but I can imagine that if I lived and grew up in Sunnydale, I probably wouldn't be that phased out by all the weird stuff happening at the Bronze.

Actually, I think the Bronze sums up pretty well how careful you sometimes have to be in a bar/club. The Bronze might have vampires, but we have to not forget that a busy bar can be just as dangerous. We're shown multiple time in BtVS that someone decides to fallow a stranger in a dark alley and they ending wanting to suck their blood. Well it's not to far from what can happen in reality if someone is not careful. I'm actually surprised that the kids from Sunnydale aren't smarter about trusting strangers so easily :S I thought it was common sense to stick in groups when you go out. Now of course that's not really talking about the big events at the bronze, but more so why Buffy keeps having to save people in the dark alley at the back.

I'd still go to the Bronze. They had some awesome live bands playing there.

I mean, I would take it a step further personally--I'd move out of Sunnydale altogether after it became clear that those wacky, freaky, deadly "incidents" seemed to be happening more often there than in any other part of the world (except for Cleveland and wherever else).

I hear there are a lot of good places to see shows/drink beer in LA 😉

There was some strange things happening at the Bronze that's for sure, then again it is Sunnydale. That whole town was weird, never mind the people who lived there.
How many churches were in the town?
How many pubs, clubs, resteurants?
When the Hansel and Gretel demon hit town who was the mayor? I don't remember the COWS closing the Bronze.
So what was it that attracted the person in the street to live there.
As for the college, is it normal for parents not to check up on what the town is like.
And given that people died in the Bronze, I'd ask if WR&H or one of their clients owned the place.

OK, Sunnydale has a population of 38,500 people. None of them seem to notice that maybe a dozen or so people get killed per week, probably a minimum due to the number of vampires in town. Even Mr. Savitsky, the loan officer in "Flooded" 6ABB04, says that for some reason, property values in Sunnydale have not risen as fast as anywhere else in CA. It seems that people are living in denial or under a spell. So it appears that if I lived there, I would find nothing unusual about going to the Bronze.

Afyer all, no one in town noticed the new castle in "Dracula" 5ABB01 until Riley and Giles, both short-term residents, were the first to see it.

I would continue to go to The Bronze. My old local from 18 to this year (sadly it has turned into a hip hop bar... shudder) didn't have a great reputation. Lots of bar brawls, glassing's (where someone smashes a bottle and puts it in someones face), drug busts and my bestie even got her arm broken once by getting it crushed in a door that was flung open while some drunkens were getting thrown out.

It's a nightclub, shit happens when there are drugs and alcohol and egos involved.

I love this quote, and I completely agree. You wouldn't believe the amount of times I have been lead out for a cigarette into a dark alley and someone has wanted me to suck... their blood.

Basically, The Bronze doesn't strike me as being an overly cool place or really my kind of thing. The music is (IMO and to my taste) absolute rubbish, the decor is average and the people always look kind of daggy. If I didn't have many other options though, or if the goings on were happening at a cool bar then I would definitely go back.

I would definitely go back, but it would mainly be to figure out why all the weird stuff is happening. It's the Scoobie in me I guess. 🙂

In "Welcome To The Hellmouth," someone, Xander, I think, told Buffy that the Bronze was about the only place to go at night in Sunnydale. If he was speaking literally, that pretty much explains its popularity. No competition.

Something that always struck me as strange, though this might be different in California than it is here in Georgia, is that unsupervised, as in, not accompanied by an adult, minors were allowed in an establishment where alcoholic beverages were served.
