Just been reading a thread at Whedonesque concerning the above topic. Whether or not you would like to see the Buffy movie remade, this time featuring the cast we know and love.

Personally, as i posted there, i would like to see a new movie set some time after Chosen, so that everyone who didn't appear until Buffy got to Sunnydale can feature in it. However i would like to see it feature flashback sequences to Buffy's origin story in a similar fashion to what we saw in Becoming part 2.

This would not only allow Joss to retell the important aspects of her origin in the fashion he really wanted to (in other words nothing like how the original movie told it!) but also be a great way of pleasing any movie goers who were new to the slayerverse and may not know who Buffy is and what the whole slayer deal is about.

Doing it that way would also suit us longterm fans who want to see the story after Chosen (and Not Fade Away for that matter) continued.

So what are everyone elses thoughts on this?

i would like to see that (and *only* if joss does it the way he wants). but not now, i don't think now is the time. i think give them another few months to pull themselves together, have the cast really ready for it and willing to pull off this project, the perfect storyline and the right timing and yes - do it then.

Yeah, the timing for this is probably the most important thing.

It needs to be long enough away so that the cast are fresh and ready to return to the slayerverse but also not so long that the fanbase starts to drift away to other series. There will always be a strong core fanbase for Buffy and Angel but even now i'm seeing more and more websites close and the less dedicated viewers moving on.

That's fair enough of course but i'm hoping that not too many will have lost interest by the time a movie happens. I want to see a trilogy so the first movie needs some damn good figures! 😉

Yeah, I'd slap down 8 bucks for that - the whole post chosen with pre-WTTH flashbacks thing. Now if we can only talk that pesky SMG into it... 🙂

Here's something mildly interesting, I think. Knowing the way Joss feels about Donald Sutherland (is that guy even still alive?), it's probably a safe bet DS won't be in it. So who should he cast as Merrick? I guess there's that little fat guy who played him in BTVS, but is he still alive?

Oh i think it is a safe bet that Donald Sutherland won't be getting a phonecall should a new Buffy movie ever be made. Well maybe if Joss needs someone to make the coffee! 😉

Personally i hope they could get Richard Riehle back as Merrick for the sake of continuity but for a movie they may want a bigger name. Depends on how large Merrick's role in the movie is i guess.

I'm pretty sure he is still alive. I heard he was in an episode of Enterprise this last season so if he has died it was very recently.

thank god for that, but donald won't be in the movie, should one ever happen. that, fortunately, is a fact!

The little fat guy who was in this bit from Becoming 1. Wouldn't he be Merrick? Did I understand from the one of the previous posts, the actor's name is Richard Riehle?

Buffy climbs back up a few steps and looks around. She takes off her
jacket and sits down to wait for Tyler. She lays the jacket across her
legs and idly looks around again. A man in a black suit approaches her.
He is her first Watcher, who has finally found her.

Watcher: Buffy Summers?

Buffy: (looks at him) Yeah? (smiles) Hi! (confused) What?

Watcher: I need to speak with you.

Buffy: (worried) You're not from Bullock's, are you? 'Cause I-I meant
to pay for that lipstick.

Watcher: There isn't much time. You must come with me. Your destiny
awaits.

Yeah that's right. Richard Riehle was the actor who played Buffy's first Watcher in the flashbacks featured in Becoming part 1.

One thing that has caused a lot of speculation is the fact that he was never actually named as Merrick on screen. However the official Buffy episode guide, not to mention most of the other most popular ones, lists the character as Merrick so it's been pretty much accepted that this was his name.

lol I think Donald Sutherland is still alive...

But we wouldn't see much action from any character besides SMG...the only original character from the movie to the show is BUFFY.

If they made a movie about the show, I'd be upset. What's done is done, and you can't make something about it AFTER, or even DURSING the seven seasons. It just wouldn't be the same.

Now what would be interesting is if they did the movie like the original, but put Angel and Whistler in it. See it from Angel's view, how he followed Buffy around L.A. We never saw the entire story that way....and besides, I like the Whistler character.

Hehe, it was the other Merrick actor, Richard Riehle, that we were wondering about. Donald Sutherland is most definately still alive and kicking! 😉

You know, I think I'm going to go against everyone else here lol and say I'd like to say a new 'pre-Sunnydale' film. Let Joss bring those events into show continuity. It would certainly be drastically different from the original.

A remake of the original would be cool - Sarah is one of the few cast members who hasn't aged as much and can still play a young character. Alot of the other cast has gotten too old looking to go back and play high school characters again - although the story most likely wouldn't involve them anyway. I wonder who he'd cast as Pike? Hopefully not Luke Perry!! I can see someone like Shane West playing him fairly well. I love his character on ER now.

Anyhoo - as much as I'd like to see a post-chosen/nfa movie, it'd require so much background information for the new fans which it would need to draw in to make money.

I kinda want the Buffyverse to continue in a different way.

I want to see the story of a new slayer: past, present, future, whatever. Just something new.

When you think about it, you could fit one whole slayer's life into a movie.

But if it had to involve Buffy & the Scoobs, I want it to the be FINAL fight. I'm not talking about some random battle, I want to see the final showdown. The final battle that leads to Fray (Yes, I've become very interested in this).

See that is what i think too. Okay Sarah couldn't pull off a fifteen year old with the ease she could a few years ago but with a little well placed make up, hairstyling and the appropriately dated mid 90's clothing i think she could pull it off.

As for Pike, assuming they actually kept him in the official continuity (so far he has never been so much as mentioned within the series itself) i would imagine they would go with a reasonably big name. Probably an O.C. style teen idol. Let's be honest, that was the only reason that Luke Perry got the gig the first time around. 😉

I'm not certain that making a post-Chosen movie would be too much of an issue as far as backstory is concerned. Buffy is the central character so it would be important to establish her thoroughly to new viewers (the flashbacks would take care of that) but, apart from perhaps Angel and Spike, i don't think that the rest of the cast's history would need to be explained in too much detail for the movie story to work.

Look at the X Files movie, it was extremely heavy in continuity and barely made any efort to introduce any potential new moviegoers but it still did very well. I think a Buffy movie would be a lot more straight forward to establish the basics to people. And unlike the X Files it might actually end up making some sense! 🙂

Comma, i'm with you there. My perfect set up would be a Buffy/Angel movie trilogy that ends with the blocking off of the demon dimensions from earth that is destined to occur. I've always felt that it is the culmination of the Senior Partners Apocalypse, and their subsequent defeat, that leads to that happening so it would be a fantastic way to tie Buffy, Angel and Fray together officially. Lead that into a Fray movie trilogy and you have my slayerverse dream.

I haven't even seen the original Buffy movie... First I didn't want to cause I thought it would ruin the series for me, now I want to and will...

Anyways, I think I'd want another Buffy movie, with the "real" cast. But I definetly agree it can't be high school, I mean come on, Alyson is 30.. she can't play a 16 year old, and neither can the others, not even Sarah.. I know 27 year olds play 16 year olds all the time but in my opinion it's just weird and... well, it wouldn't work. But the most important thing, is Sarah, if she didn't wanna do it (which I'm guessing she wouldn't want to right now) I wouldn't want a movie...

honey, just want to tell you that you missed absolutely nothing. and i really do mean nothing. you missed nothing of the mythology because in all honesty - we already learned everything we needed to through flashbacks and otherwise during the show itself. as for the movie... terribly done in my opinion and it's a shame that joss' name will be attached to it.

Yeah I agree with you Wicca. It's cute for the nostaligiac feeling it gives but past that it's total cheese.

I'm so glad Joss got the chance to redeem himself and his vision on TV.

absolutely second that. hell i didn't even want to see the movie at first because of how much i thought it could destroy the impact joss had had on me thus far.

Unfortunately for me, I was 11 or 12 when the movie came out and my friends and I at the time thought it was cool 🙂 Once I reached the ripe old age of 15/16 when the show first aired, I thought otherwise obviously.

But I can still remember us doing that "How funky is your chicken" cheer! 😀
