The Case for "Charmed"

Every episode had this kind of deus ex machina ending where the sisters would use a spell that someone else had written to solve a problem they didn't know how to solve in any other way. If they had episodes with them inventing spells, that would have given them a degree of competence that would have engendered respect, but they never did that. They just followed the formula.
There were more episodes in seasons 3-7 where the sisters had to come up with spells or potions to stop the previously unstoppable demon. The first 2 seasons do rely heavily on finding the solution in the book of shadows. And they usually are attacked in their home throughout the series, this is especially an issue in later seasons, as a cost-cutting measure. In fact, there was no on-location shooting the entire 8th season. Everything was done on the paramount lot.

. They just followed the formula.
Probably explains its longevity. Most Charmed episodes are stand alone with very little season long arcs. You may get two parters but that’s about it. Everything you need to know will be added as exposition in each ep (in case there is a larger story) so it is a show very easy to watch on weekly TV. Cause you never feel like you missed anything.

It is on streaming its flaws become more glaring and obvious

it just becomes clear that showing that Phoebe is amazing and crazy successful (at her first real job btw) is some kind of wish fullfillment for either actress or audience, but it completely forgets what made Phoebe a compelling and interesting character to begin with.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, why would someone make their character a witchy Carrie freaking Bradshaw after getting control of their character. By this point there is nothing relatable in the character, she’s a witch, she’s a celebrity, her boyfriends are millionaires, there’s absolutely nothing real to connect with.

Completely agree.

If I could re-write Charmed, I would continue Phoebe on her original track. The one who was a bit scattered professionally perhaps, but who was the witchiest of them all, and frequently the one who insisted on helping innocents, even when the others were reluctant.

Because Phoebe becomes Carrie Bradshaw, sustaining herself on a weekly column and no other writing jobs (sure, Jan), they give the 'searching sister' role to Paige. Except, Paige already had a career. A career that also served as a source of storytelling and potential innocents. It isn't glamorous to be a social worker, but it was a good story angle and it told us something about Paige as a character.

When Paige flits around doing various jobs for lol's, doing magic school, and focusing on witchcraft, it kind of works, but it also kind of doesn't. It's like they shoehorn her into that role because the youngest has to be the flighty one.

I would have kept Paige as a social worker, and had Phoebe continue to be a searcher professionally. It is a bit Btvs perhaps, but I could see original Phoebe eventually having a small magic shop and getting to know a circle of other witches, like the ones who had the equinox celebration she takes Piper to at one point. She was always into those things, at one point she takes Prue to a magic shop late at night to shop for a good luck charm, like lean into this show! Continue here!

I understand that for the actress having a "passive" witch power was boring, but it all started to go wrong with Phoebe when they started with her levitation etc. She should have been the grounding magical force, like the genuine magical power and knowledge, the one who really took magic seriously, contrasted with the active powers of the others that are more reactionary and instrumental.

I would have also kept Paige as a social worker. An arc about trying to figure out how to balance helping people by being a social worker and through magic could have been great but what they wrote just wasn’t great. She was determined and worked hard to be a social worker and she quit as soon as she got her promotion.

I also didn’t love Prue quitting her job and becoming a successful photographer in just a couple of episodes or Piper quitting her job and opening a successful night club in a couple episodes. It’s just not grounded writing.

I'm only into season two, so Prue has only just quit and only had one photography gig. And yes, the rapid success of P3 and Prue getting a job so quickly are completely unrealistic. But a realistic depiction of the difficulty of either course is just not that compelling viewing for a supernatural show. Not unless there is a battle with IRS demons! There isn't really a good way of handling such switches in a manner that viewers would enjoy. So, I don't know what other options there are other than neither happening, and status quo is not always god.

To be fair, there was a time lapse between Piper quitting and opening the club. And it did show some struggles at the beginning. And a few times throughout the run.

But I agree with the Prue bit. And then they also shoehorned in a love for photography during college that was never mentioned before she quit Bucklands. I know that it was becoming a bit unrealistic that she could leave her job over and over again without repercussion, which is why they transitioned her to freelance photography. And they did try to make that a plot at the beginning of season two, with Jack coming in and kind of showing her up because her witch duties kept getting in the way of her career. And she didn’t like seeing the version of herself in the future where she owned Bucklands and her life was all work. So, I get her wanting to expand out from her career.

I just think that they could have had her transition to the job she originally loved—the museum. She was so knowledgeable about historical items, and it really was an added part of her character that went away when she left the auction house.

It's a television show directed to young women in the 1990s, everyone is going to have a "cool career.” But it does make sense, to a degree. Being able to sense magic should involve a deeper understanding of the universe, and a desire to impart that knowledge to others. Like Newton, having a broad interest in theology, physics and mathematics.

I'm fine with them having Prue switch to photography, I just thought it was done really badly.

1) Introduce a "hidden" passion she supposedly always had but we never knew about
2) Say that she "always wanted to win the Pulitzer in photography" ... mmkay
3) Say that she only got the job she had previously so they could "keep the house"... With the amount of schooling you would need to be an expert like Prue, odds are her student debt should've made it harder for them to keep the house.

Why not just go, "hey, I'm actually really stressed at work now with our new witchy life and I need a change".

I accept that to a degree, but then they did start out in a much more grounded place - college drop out, works at an auction house, restaurant manager, and social worker. It was only as the show got popular they decided everyone needed a "cool" career. But again, losing a lot of what initially drew young women to the show by making that change.

I agree. I realized early on that the club was brought in so they could do cross-musical promotion and attract more viewers (because I guess teens and young adults of the 00s only watched shows their favorite artists were on? LOL. hollywood execs are weird.)

However, shifting both Piper and Prue from homely careers to cool careers took away the essence of the show. I liked that in season 1, they often met up at Quake after a big fight for drinks and a debrief. This wasn't exactly lost at P3, but it certainly was different because of a different atmosphere (club vs restaurant).

I liked the initial idea of Phoebe going to school to become a psychologist/therapist. This complemented her psychic powers, and even though the empath powers were retconned to initially only mortals, having them to Phoebe gained them in season 6, having her be a psychologist would have worked so much better as a therapist than a famous advice columnist. While Phoebe did have some selfish tendencies in seasons 1-3, I think this went way too far in the latter half of the series. She would use her powers to manipulate people and situations rather than for the good of innocents. I appreciate that this was recognized by stripping her of her active powers in season 6, but it didn't do anything. She was still abusing her powers in seasons 7 and 8, and then her sudden desire to leave the manner in season 8 seemed inauthentic.

It's funny. I used to love Phoebe. She was early on my favorite sister. She was fun and spunky. She didn't mind being between jobs because she focused on learning her craft and saving innocents. She went to college to be a better protector and defender of innocents. Her romance with Cole changed her. She became morally grey, having fallen in love with a demon. This went off the rails in season 4 when she became the Queen of Evil for a few episodes, and then she became a selfish shell of herself.

I think you hit the nail on the head here. It's not that I don't like her doing photography. I think it blends well with what people in their thirties begin to feel, who have been doing the same job for 8-10 years. But it wasn't executed well. And it took away an excellent ability to bring in monsters-of-the-week naturally. And, as I mentioned before, it also seemed to take away her expansive knowledge of history and historical artifacts. Though I love episodes like "Murphy's Luck" and "Ex Libris," whose plots are centered around Prue's photography career. It wasn't utilized as much in season 3 as at the end of season 2. I think the writers were like, "Oh yeah, Prue still photographs stuff," and had her focus more on demon hunting--which was also kind of out of character. It certainly wasn't an evolved form of her character.

It's the same gripe I mentioned about Paige. They could have blended her desire to be a social worker and her desire to be a badass witch better in season 5. We lost a part of her character when she quit her job to be a full-time witch. Also, it is kind of selfish to rely on your (new) siblings--one of whom is pregnant--to care for you while you focus on being a witch. That might have worked better if she had taken shifts at P3 to help make money. But it just seemed like lazy writing so that the writers didn't have to figure out how to explain why Paige wasn't at work every week.

Wait, are those real bands? As in famous? Or famous somewhere.

I guess The Cranberries haven't turned up yet, because I would assume they would be playing Zombie. Pet Benetar and the Goo Goo Dolls I have heard of, but I am not sure if I would recognise their music. Dishwalla has turned up - there was a plot element in getting them to play if I remember correctly - but the name meant nothing.

Zombie isn’t really Charmed. I think they may have played ”Just my imagination”

I think we also get Michelle Branch, doing ”Goodbye to you”, which I recall mostly because I associate it so strongly with Btvs.

How can Zombie not be suitable for a supernatural show! 😀 It's about zombies! (Okay, I know it is not.)

I've got a blu ray player working for Christmas . 🙂 This thread is tempting me to do the Season 1 discs , in Amaze-o-vision with all the original tunes. Later seasons are still ruinously priced in the UK . Fortunately the DVD cut is pretty nice , you just lose the music . It's only the SD streaming version of the show that I find unwatchable . At higher resolutions it might be okay but at the lower end it's just bad .

Child. 😏

There were so many bands that made guest appearances. As a teen, it was my go-to for good music! I also think they wanted to riff on the Bronze from Buffy, but make it sexier. Also, One Tree Hill did the same, introducing a club in season 2 that went through til the finale. And there was the Peach Pit After Dark on BH90210. So maybe it was also just a teen draw for a soap show?

It's cross promotion. The Act in question is trying to promote an album or a tour, getting on a TV watched by a sufficient number of your target audience is a worthwhile expense. The TV channel usually gets paid, the producer gets to make his teen show look trendy and hip, every one is happy.

I'm only up to episode 17 of season two so far! I don't think there have been many bands actually named as yet - Dishwalla was, but I can't remember any others - and I have a suspicion that no-one so far is internationally known, rather than just US known. To me, so far, the bands are at the Dingoes Ate My Baby level; created for the show and may or may not feature real musicians - I have no idea whether any of the Dingoes could really sing or play or just stood around with musical instruments in a slightly more competent manner than Robert Palmer's "musicians" (and Shania Twain's in her video that was based on that).
