The Cautionary Tale of Celebrity

Sweets and I were dicussings this I think on the weekend sometime, and as I mentioned to her...I really had hoped this wasn't just some plot to add to her "stardom", but alas, it is sad to see anyone die so young, especially with young children involved.

I find the UK so strange in that something like reality tv can make someone so well known. Almost every magazine I glimpse at I have no idea who the person on the cover is and why it's such a travesty that they doing whatever it is they do. I just don't get it!

yes we were 🙂
I feel really sorry fro her i never bought into the "goody" brand but none should ever have to die of cancer especially before there time. I've seen what happens to someone when it gets terminal and no should have to go through that. Plus she has two little boys to think for and they'll be without a mother 🙁.
I have no problem with how Jade lied her life through reality TV she chose to do that and it worked for her and got her a lot of money.
I don't have a problem with reality TV either people put themselves up for these programmes knowing the risks,if you don't like it turn over your TV or turn it off. Pretty simple.

I may not be a fan of Jade and what she's done with her life especially going back to Celebrity Big Brother and saying some horrible things to Shilpa Shetty. But I don't think anyone deserves to die like this not even her. She's so young and has two boys who she will never see grow up, its so sad to see and watch this all happen throughout the media.

Im not a big fan of jade 2 be honest.
I have known alot of people that have died of cancer. My mum is soo disabled. and has had cancer.
Jade came fmaous for a stupid reason. sorry but big brotehr is crap...
People die all the time of cancer...i feel for her i realy do but i dont want to read it every day about her....does anyone get what i mean? i dont class her as a celeb i class her as a normal human and a stupid girl.
People die every day.....
she just anoys me...thats all...
i dont think they should be soo public about her cancer.
also beacuse of her it made this whole racist crap happen! Makes more and more people scared of what to say! Does my head in!

I've got a lot of respect for the decision to publicise Jade Goody's ordeal with cancer, it's raising a lot of awareness about cervical cancer and I don't see why, if she's on her way out, she can't help others to at least be wary of its existence before she goes.

There was something infinitely interesting in the first series of Big Brother before it became about the gimmick, it really was interesting to watch these guys and gals unfold on screen and behave in ways that was odd but the medium has gone and taken the Reality out of it.

This is something that people forget, yes. The first series was genuinely interesting to watch because they were just normal dudes and dudettes. They didn't need contrived gimmicks to be interesting, they just were. And because they were the first generation, they weren't playing up to the camera or as noticeably conscious of the media element of what they were participating in.

I could name all ten of the original housemates before I could name a single one of the last lot, and I'd have a pint with Anna or Craig any day.

Re: Jade...

I don't especially like Jade, but reality tv owes her at least as much as she owes it, so whatever. It's her life, and here, her death, so as far as I'm concerned it's her decision. If she's okay with this, then it's none of my business. Unless I watch. Which I might just do.

Absoulutely not. Not only is it sickening to willingly put someone dying on the air for everyone to see, this should remain between her and her family.

I can understand concern about her family here, but I don't think this exploits her in any way. If she does go ahead with it, then she's doing so willingly. It was her choice to make, and it's not up to us to decide what's best for her.

And not to sound like a hopeless sociopath, but I do think it could be a useful step in breaking down some of the taboo around death and the process of dying. At the very least, it'll provoke discussion about it. Television has shown people dying before, at least here there's some context.

I am not a jade fan , never have been and never will be. However of course I would not wish this upon her, she is young , has two children who she obviously loves dearly.

I can understand her wanting to make as much money for her children who wouldnt but I also feel that filming her death and showing this is a tad distasteful. Ok she is raising awareness and results of girls having cervical screenings has gone up, but like many are saying surely you last moments should be between family and those you love. I know its her decisions at the end of the day, but what about her children, what about when they are old enough and see there mother dying on tv and know that it was watch by millions.

As opposed to when she showed her absolute ignorance on screen?
As opposed to when she showed herself giving oral sex on screen?
As opposed to when she showed herself to be at the very least a bully, but maybe even racist, on screen?
As opposed to when she got completely naked and drunk on screen?

See, the above is far worse, in my opinion, than her showing her death.
This might actually mean something.
Granted it will be seen by millions (probably) and will be sensationalised in the press BUT I do not doubt it will be a moment of absolute honesty.
I don't doubt that this will be a moment of love that she, not only shares with her children, but also in a peculiar way, with her fans, the people she has, for the last 7 years, had to thank for everything she has.

I hope that when I die, people don't try and tell me how to share that experience as if they are the sole decider of society's moral sensibilities.

Maybe I'm remembering it wrong, but IMHO, there was considerably less outrage when ITV did this...
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2007/aug/01/broadcastingethics.medicineandhealth

There was tremendous outrage BUT thats because the death wasn't shown.

Plus there was the whole 'should they/shouldn't they' conversations all over TV about showing the death.

The cases are also different in that this woman has been in the public eye consistently for 7 years.

If they do this, they will have to have the actual final moment on camera and shown on TV.

Why does it have to have the actual final moment on screen? Why does anyone need or quite frankly want to see this?

I have heard conflicting stories over the last few days about this whole thing. Some say the story will be of her wedding and her last final days, weeks, months or however long she has left but won't show her actual passing.

My point isn't about whether it should or shouldn't be shown, but that if it is billed as 'Jades death on screen' then that is exactly what it should be - unlike this show that misled people by saying it would show him die then tell us he died two days later.

I do think though that it is fitting that her final moments be on screen.

To make the fortune she has, Jade has to have some intelligence and understanding of what she is doing, so if SHE decides that this is what she is going to do, then she is aware of what she is doing and not being exploited in anyway.

I cannot help but think that the people who don't wish to see this are less concerned for her family and more that if they see it, they would have to face their own mortality - which is something most people would rather never do.

Not at all, I think the reason why people dont want to see it is that they dont want to support someone making money out dying on tv. There are people dying everyday in terrible situations why should Jade have the privalige to make money out death when it happens to us all. ( the answer to that is probably cos she can!)

I can understand the reality show talking about the illness and showing what she is going through, that raising awareness and teaches people what happens - as said before its be stated cervial screenings in young girls is going up due to Jade which is good. I personnally dont feel the need to see her die on tv.

It never even crossed my mind that she was being exploited, like you said she can be extremely ignorant but the girl has business savvy and carved a career out of nothing.

If anyone is doing the exploiting it is her. Exploiting her illness and her death. I can understand why she is doing it but I don't have to agree with it. Nothing anyone says here is going to have any effect on what actually happens but, for me, showing ones death on screen is beyond comprehension and grossly unnecessary.

I cannot help but think that the people who don't wish to see this are less concerned for her family and more that if they see it, they would have to face their own mortality - which is something most people would rather never do.

There is no shame in that. I don't really give my own mortality too much thought but I should think that seeing Jade Goody's death would force to think about it. However, that isn't the reason why I don't think it should be televised but even if it was there wouldn't be any wrong in feeling that way.

I just feel that there is so little about life now that is sacred. Everything is over exposed and sensationalised. Death, for me, should be shared with those closest and dearest to you. I don't think watching Jade Goody die is something we as a society need to experience.

Death on tv has happened since the 60's. Remember the Budha's that set themselves on fire during Viet Nam. The Pulitzer prize winning photo of the Vietnamese officer shooting a tied civilian in the head? That one was caught by a news cameraman and a photo of the bullet exploding out of the side of the victims head.
Man has always had a curiosity about death. It is the one event that man fears but yet is completely curious about. I have read all the posts and I agree with everyone's opinion!
She is financially looking after her family
She is selfish
She is trying to show what happens if you don't see a doctor for regular checkups
She is a media whore
She is a savy media whore
She is...on and on and on
Bottom line is for whatever reason she is doing this it is an opportunity for people to watch someone deteriorate before your eyes because of cancer. Because believe me if you watch the deterioration of a human you will be sympathetic when she actually does die...so sympathetic that you will be relieved that she is no longer in pain.

I don't think death has any sacred status beyond what it means to the person involved; it's just a physical process, after all, and one we've all got in common. If you're not cool doing it in the public eye that's fair enough, but if there's consent for it to be shown, I don't think there's anything inherently and indisputably taboo about it.

So long as it doesn't happen in the middle of the Tweenies or something, at least.
