The Characters You Didn't Like

Imagine some Buffyverse character who you personally didn't particularly like, Kennedy, Riley, or Spike, for instance, got a series, miniseries, or movie. Would you watch it anyhow, because it was part of Buffy's world and a product of Whedon's imagination, or would your feelings for the principal character keep you from watching?

Take that a step further, and say that the show featured a particular SHIP that you never approved of. Would you still watch it, or would having to see X and Y constantly snuggling and smooching when you're a hard core Y/Z shipper be just too much for you to bear?

Any actor on a Joss Whedon show has aced an intelligence test. The level of acting was in general very good and the actors fully understood how to play their parts. The actor is not the person depicted in the series because the person depicted in the series is a fictional product of the screenwriters in use on the Whedon show and the new miniseries would, in general, have a different character and different writing.

Relationships are also fictional - I didn't have abandonment issues when someone on the show moved on to a different relationship and I certainly have no issues with a new 'ship on a new show.

I think I would watch a show that features a character i don't like. I absolutely HATE caleb but after watching Firefly (which, admittedly I have only seen the first 3 episodes of) i adore Mal which makes me not hate Caleb so much. If that makes any sense. Same thing goes for Gina Torres.

The only character I actually hate from the verse is Harmony, and that has more to do with the actress who played her than the character, though I didn't like Harmony much before my issues with Mercedes McNab appeared.

So, for me, it would really depend on what supporting characters were added to the show before I could decide whether or not I would watch. I would probably watch the first two eps and then decide if it was worth sticking around for.

I find it very, very hard to watch a show where I hate or despise the main character and I can't really understand people who do. In fact, I don't think there has ever been a show I've watched where I hated or disliked the main character.

So, no, I don't think I could watch a show with Harmony as the lead.

i would neeeeever watch a kennedy show, i may see episode here and there in case buffy characters make an appearance and because of whedon loyalty but seriously she is the character i hate most in the entire history of buffy. it has nothing to do with her being willow's rebound, willow deserves love, its just the character-rude cocky overconfident and always mouthing off.
okay rant over. and sorry to anyone who loves kennedy, although maybe you should be apologising to me😛

There is no way I'd watch a show like "Kennedy: the Vampire Slayer".

Goddess no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, NO!

Apart from me hating her because she practically forced Willow out of her comfort zone so she could be in a relationship with her, I hated her atitude. She was probably one of the snottiest characters in the entire show

I'd give it a chance - honestly, I didn't like Angel all that much on Buffy, but he turns out to be a great character on his own show. Add to that the fact that Joss's shows have a real ensemble feeling too them and bringing in so many other characters than just the main ones (in other words, he'd never make Supernatural), there's actually a pretty good chance that they could make something I'd like even if it was based on a character that I didn't like.

Yes and no depending on the level of hatred. I don't think I could watch a show about Riley and the commando guys. But I could watch a show about a ship I dislike because that means I would at least like one of the two main characters. Also, if it was another character that I slightly dislike, I would at least give it a shot.

For example, I was pretty neutral with Wes on BtVS but he became one of my favorite on AtS. So it's not because I dislike a character on one show that it automatically means I'll hate them on another.

Edit: Also, if I knew there was other possible interesting characters in the spinoff, I'd at least give it a shot. Let's say a show about Riley but the supporting cast is amazing, I might be able to get over the fact that I hate the main character and focus on the side characters.

I don't think I hate any character. I'm not interested in some, but I don't hate any of them. I would give the show a chance. I'd probably like it and I would be excited about the guest starring and mentioning of other Buffyverse characters.

Characters I hate in Buffy?

Riley is the worst Buffy character without question, he's so boring becuase he's just a nice guy and has no one liners or a cocky attitude. If Joss Whedon wanted to make him a normal boyfriend for Buffy, don't have him as a soldier. If you're going to make him a soldier make him like Nathan Drake from the Uncharted series who is cocky but still helps people in need when he comes across them.

Kennedy I know gets so much hate but I wouldn't say I'm on the bandwagon will all the haters but I will admit she's a forced character.

Dawn I grew dislike for after Season 5, she didn't do much after then other than just be a whiny attention seeking girl. This would have been fine but there was no efforts in making her character likeable.

I can't say Snyder, Walsh or Parker I hate because they are intentionally love to hate characters.

I love Harmony to be honest, she's funny and sweet and I love how she annoys everyone including Spike. I would have loved it if she drove Spike insane and he sees Haromny everywhere and he sings a song about his insanity.

I think I'd watch a show centered around a character I didn't like. Or I'd at least give it a chance. For instance, Riley was my least favorite character because he was so boring. But if a show was centered around him the writer's would have the chance to flesh out his character more and I may end up liking him. Plus Joss really knows how to put together ensemble casts so I'd probably end up liking the supporting characters more or the dynamic of the group. Same thing would go for Dawn. I hated her in the series because she was an angsty teen and I just couldn't relate to her. But she would be older now and hopefully more mature.

I think the important thing for me would be how has the character grown since being on Buffy and did they grow into a stronger character. Along with what Blaze already said, I also didn't really care for Wes when he was on Buffy but I thought he was great on Angel.

Maybe I wouldn't get into it (which would be surprising considering I love EVERYTHING Joss does and almost worship the ground he walks on...), but I'd give it a try. I think Riley post-Buffy could have had a lot of potential. His meeting with his wife, his life in the jungle, etc. could have all been really interesting.

Kennedy I would probably watch a show about her early years though. Try to understand why she acts like a biatch in BTVS... Maybe I'd hate her in it, but I'd probably learn to like another reccurent character 🙂

There were very few characters on Buffy/Angel that I hated... except for the ones I was supposed to hate, of course. The usual fan targets... Kennedy, Riley, Dawn... I had no problem with. I never liked Connor, and thought it was a mistake to have him on the show, until his reappearance in season 5. But he's become a pretty good character in the comics. I also didn't much care for Robin Wood... attaching himself to Buffy's team and then undermining her leadership at every turn.

But, I would watch or read anything that's canon in the Buffyverse.

That would totally depend upon the story that was being told about and around the character. I can get past not liking a main character but I can't get past a bad/boring plot paired with unlikeable characters.

Being a Whedonverse character or actor may be enough to spark some interest in a particular show, but it certainly isn't enough to keep me watching it if I don't find it enjoyable.

I wouldn't watch a show about a character I hate.

A ship wouldn't matter to me, cuz I don't hate a relationship based on the relationship, but by the character.

I wouldn't bother with a Spike series, he stopped being interesting to me after season 4.

It would depend on the premise of the show and who the rest of the cast were. If I thought a show centered around Spike was telling a story I found interesting I would at least give it a go.

However, I couldn't watch a show with Spuffy. I don't believe in it, especially from Buffy's POV. If a Buffyverse show started in the morning with Spuffy as a centerpiece I wouldn't watch it. I couldn't.

P.S. @JReed1986 I think Riley is hilarious and has had some great one liners.

Take the case that was born a spin-off Spike centric, and Take the case that the cast was composed by unknown new characters ..in that case I would look at even if you paid me. I would not see any reason of interest and I think for me, it would be predictable all the content of the show. I know Spike, and I know that everything revolves around him is predictable, boring, and for me it is of no interest. It's already happened with the mini dedicated to Spike, I have not read, because I do not like this character, and I think I did a favor to myself, saving time and money. 😛

Idem for regarding Spuffy, if the season nine continued as it had started, I would have left the comic of Buffy. Luckily Spike went into orbit on the moon and gave me a little breathing.. shame though that now he is back, of course not before he had pestered by his presence the comic of A & F. Spike is everywhere, in all the covers, but his presence is absolutely useless. Just as has happened in ATS5, it was really necessary to have Spike? 🙄

Don't care what character is the lead, I'd watch any Buffy spin-off. Characters in spin offs tend to change and adapt, like Angel did. He really didn't have much of a character in Buffy IMO, and definitely didn't seem like a character who could hold his own show. But he definitely changed and I'd imagine that would happen with any other character

If I don't like a character, I would never be able to invest in watching a whole show about them, period. I would never watch a spin-off just because it was part of the same 'verse; I have to like the characters and be interested in what's going to happen to them.

Oddly enough, I would have said the same thing about Angel. I never had any desire to watch the show until Season 5 when Spike became a regular. It wasn't until after I began watching Season 5 that I bothered to go back and watch the earlier seasons. I was really surprised to learn that I actually liked Angel as long as Buffy wasn't there.
