OMG....Did anyone see it.
I was never a fan of the pre-2005 Dr. Whos, simply because i never took the time to emerge myself in the Sci-Fi hit(Hey, i had Buffy, Angel, Voyager, TNG, DS9, Stargate SG1, Seaquest DSV, Hercules, Xena, X-Files, Smallville, The Adventures of Lois and Clark, Andromeda, Quantum Leap to name a few,, added to school and work PLUS some semblance of a life, you can see i didnt have time to integrate another Sci-Fi show into my life...ohh Dont forget Red Dwarf!!!), so with Saturday night TV at a low ebb and all the hype surrounding Christopher Ecclestons 'Doctor', i gave it a shot......and was mightily impressed.
Over that first season, i came to love this show. Eccleston was comical, powerful and exuded all the qualities i had been told, the 'Doctor' should......well, exude. His onscreen performance was crisp, precise and altogether amazing, with a pinnacle performance in his first 'Dalek' encounter.
This Doctor showed true depth while facing all his adversaries, he showed his experienced 'inexperience'(i know contradiction, but anyone who knows the Doctor will understand), in the face of all the new faces and dangers.
He was simply marvellous.
Then there is the supporters.
First. Rose.
'YUCK'.....that was my first comment on the idea of Billie Piper.....'YUCK'.
HOW WRONG WAS I?
Billie Piper is, in my humble opinion, THE perfect actress(before this i would never have called her an actress, but she deserves that moniker now) for this role. Fun, sexy and well balanced against the 'kooky' Ecclestons 'Doctor'.
The character of Rose as well, a great up to date 'sidekick', who proves she has the right to be in that 'Tardis'.
Captain Jack, i thought, a pompous American jack-ass.....for five FULL minutes. Then i warmed to him. Once i realised he was supposed to be the same but different to the Doctor, i immediatley 'fell in love' with his character...yeah i'll say it, i'm not ashamed.....i fell in love with him(though manliness aside.......i dont mean sexually---need man points.....Billie Piper...GRRRR).
He brought a new dimension to the show, to Rose and importantly, to the Doctor. And he did it well.
NOW, i know i know, i called this thread 'The Christmas Invasion', which was the Christmas Special and that what i wanted to talk about, i just wanted to show you, dear reader, how great i thought Ecclestons first and ONLY season was.
When the 'Doctor' died at the end of the last episode, i was in shock. I knew and understood the regeneration process, but to me, i didn't believe some scottish Whelp who i had seen as a crap 'Casanova'(UK BBC3) could come close to My Doctor...yeah you read me right, my Doctor.....Every fan has one Doctor, THE one to them that epitomises how the Doctor should be portrayed..and Eccleston was MINE.........or so i thought.
David Tennants VERY first outing as the Doctor, the 5 minute short for 'Children in Need', was ok, didn't give us too much, just a little taster, appetizer, if you will......Yes thats right, that one was the Prawn Cocktail.....
Now, the starter was good, i mean, i would recommend it to friends, but i was worried, would the main course of 'The Christmas invasion' be another serving of Turkey, or would i be getting a treat of a meal, a marvellous..... Filet Mignon, Succulent Veal or perhaps Coq au Vin.
Well, after the show has been digested, i can finally divulge that i only had one serving today of Turkey, and that was JUST before the Queens speech.
OK, 'The Christmas Invasion', started off a little funny, maybe the veal was slightly undercooked, but within minutes, it finished self cooking and was starting to hit the perfect taste buds.
The Basic premise, Rose and The 'Doctor'(of what......does ANYONE know what his Ph.D is in?) arrive back in the present after the massive fight with the 'Dalek' army. In his fresh Body, still releasing all the power of the Tardis and the Regeneration, The Doctor is practically unconcious, so Rose takes him to her mothers home, and allows him to recuperate.
BUT wait....evil is afoot. Soem evil Santa Clauses have made themselves known, and Christmas decorations, are running amok.
What the 'chuff', is going on, the world is doomed......or so we think, until the still 'frazzled' Doctor, steps in, seemingly saving the day.
As Rose, Mickey(her Ex...too long to go into and my posts already boring you i bet) and her mom, rejoice, the Doctor lends one final warning, before he falls into unconciousness.......the Santa's were simply 'scouts' for a much larger menace, the Sycorax, an Alien invasion Force, with Earth as its target.
With the Doctor out of Commision, the Earth is again in immediate peril, with the new Prime Minister doing her best to ensure our safety, while hoping for help from Our hero, The Doctor(still unconcious), Rose, see's no chance of 'resistance', instead seeking refuge in the TARDIS, for her and her companion and family.
OK, without spoiling it completely, a Cup of Tea later(How British...and accurate TRUST ME), things are again peachy, but with a massive surprise and sting for Earth and the Doctor.
Now, as long winded as all that is, i'm finally coming to MY point.
This first outing of Tennants, was, awesome, from his hilarious 'Lion King' moment, to his awesome warning that we're in the galaxy now.
He played the part better then expected, made me laugh, mad me jump in shock and also at one point made me swoon(again...Billie Piper...GRRRR).
I am so looking forward to this mans portrayal of the 'Doctor', and cannot wait for the new Series full swing(some of the things to look forward to CYBERMEN, K-9 and Stewart Head, oh my gosh).
OK, well i hope you read to the end, and i hope you will respond when you are back...
ohh one last thing, http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/episodes/index.shtml the BBC official site....has the new Trailer showing ASH in a character that will shock you...in a good way.
