I split the Spike hate thread ( https://www.buffy-boards.com/threads/why-the-huge-spike-hate.62979/page-15#post-1145863 ) Topher and I had moved into such mirror positions. It's funny that we all kinda go in this cycle regardless of whether Spike is there.

Even if that were true (and it isn't at all) it's the way he's defended. If you don't like Spike and see how great he is then you're called a hater, or irrational or basically that you're watching the wrong show because you don't get the 'greatness' of the later seasons and Spuffy.

No other character is defended with such maximum intensity by their followers. Maybe its a spill-off from early 'shipping wars' or whatever but it doesn't matter and its in no way justified. The end result is that for many it just damages the perception of Spike. Can't debate about him rationally= vastly over-rated/utterly boring.

Fine - then you resent what some people say when you express your opinion.
They resent what you say.
Both are busy crying havoc and resenting being categorized.

Like this - Spike fans/haters:
Are all of one mind
The are all so unreasonable and emotional.
No matter what, as soon as some subject like this is brought up you know exactly how they will respond
Wash rinse repeat but the same dirt remains.

If you don't like/hate Spike and see how great/horrible he is then you're called a hater/fan, or irrational or basically that you're watching the wrong show because you don't get the 'greatness'/horror of the later seasons and Spuffy/Bangel.

So there I was, pondering why this. What do I want to get out of this discussion? What do I get from fandom and from the board - because it isn't this cycle alone.

My food and drink is character - I want every tiny detail, and every thought. It helps me to bounce it all off others who share my obsession. My real obsession, oddly enough, is Wesley but no one is ever all that interested. But I also obsess about Spike and Angel together - so much material there. I approach this whole thing as a writer, and I want to understand how these characters have this huge effect on me. I've done this with books more than once - tried to take apart the magic to see the mechanics. Doylist is easy - good scripts, interesting arcs, etc.

Watsonian is where the meat is. It also creates the most emotional depth and resonance. It's the blind men and the elephant, examining pieces from Hecate's cauldron, the reason Angelus went to work on Dru. It's passionate caring, it's beauty or ugliness that is not filtered by rational thought. The trick is to try and create rational thought from my reaction.

So I'm not sure if this is about communication, writing, why are you here....what do you get out of the B-verse and this board?

Like I said on the previous thread there are fans/people on these boards who see Spike as a flawed and interesting character. I can converse just fine with these people- they know who they are.
If I want to have an interesting discussion about Spike now I tend to do it in PM.

Okay - not sure what relation this has to the subject. I don't really care about Spike for now. I am interested in something different which I tried to express in the OP. It's meta and not fanwank, or maybe meta about fanwank really.

I've been a fan of Buffy for so long now. It just has a way of sticking with you. It's mostly entertainment but something about the way the verse is put together gets you thinking about the characters and the plot long after you've finished the episode or even the series. It's just incredibly engrossing.

As for this place I get a lot out of it. It's a good source of information for one thing. If I watch an episode or read an issue and something doesn't add up then I can come here and ask what I'm missing or what theories people have.

I enjoy the lengthy back and forth debates as well. Which I think everyone needs to remember you need someone who disagree with you to make the thread interesting!
