My thanks to the owners of the copyrights to BTVS as I may have borrowed a few of the characters, I'd have used another but I couldn't find a suitable place for the slices of cheese.

The Heraldic Tale of Jonathon and Andrew.

Giles was given responsibility of holding the schools talent time, rather than have it be a portrayal of what the abilities of the many school children were he saw it as an opportunity to hold a play. He decided it would be to relive the life and times of the great and the fabled King Arthur of Tintagel. Giles decided he would play the part of the plays narrator.

The stage had two sets built, the main one was the main square of the castle that featured the well and the great doors into the castles great hall. The other stage design was the main cavern that led out onto the stony beach by the ocean under the cliff face. Andrew was to play the role of the Sir Lancelot as he caused many a pretender to fear him because for they all knew he could bring about the flying monkeys, not that anyone in the castle knew what a monkey was, flying or not.

Andrew decided that it would be beneficial to him to be known as a friend to King Arthur’s magician, Merlin. One thing that Andrew didn’t know was that the magician known as Merlin was the magician’s family name and Andrew like most people did not realize that Merlin was the Lord of Learning and that his Christian name was Jonathon.

Unfortunately being a good friend of Andrew, having Andrew try to be Jonathon’s best friend caused Merlin to dislike Andrew. Although the King was a friend to Merlin it was King Arthur’s wife who had become a very good friend to Merlin. It was Buffy who was given the role of Guinevere, she would often sit and listen to Merlin’s tales of distant countries.

Buffy’s favourite stories were the wondrous tales of the Red headed wonder (Willow) who was the Lady of the Lake, even though she lived in water whenever she rose above the surface of any body of water her hair became instantly dry. The Lady of the Lake had family though she didn’t like to communicate too often with her sister, (Darla) she would often appear as a vampire.

No one in those days was afraid of a vampire because they were an unknown entity, it was the sister of the Lady of the Lake that people were afraid of; Queen Maab of the open lands. A cousin of theirs was the incredulous William the bloody as Herne the Hunter and Angel portrayed his on again off again friend the God Pan.

Just before Guinevere’s birthday Merlin said he would take her to meet The Lady of the Lake, Merlin took her down to the main entrance to his cavern on the beach by the ocean. He had dug a channel for the water to flow into his cave, Merlin had Guinevere sit on a rock beside the water of the ocean about to ask how long she’d have to wait

A figure rose from the water, Guinevere was stunned, she had tried to imagine what The Lady of the Lake looked like though nothing had prepared her to see a vision of her lovely long Red locks of hair. Guinevere turned to Merlin and thanked him for such a wonderful gift, Guinevere was overcome with joy. The joy suddenly turned to a total lack of understanding.

Guinevere looked to the Lady as she lay on the ground and seemed to focus on a patch of air in front of her. “What are you doing?” asked Guinevere. The Lady of the Lake faced her and smiled, “So few are the times when I rise over the surface that I like to practice this, I imagine a pencil spinning in the air.”

(pencils were invented in 1795)

Guinevere asked her what a pencil was, The Lady grinned, it is a tool to write with, carbon graphite in the center of a column of wood, one day they will be so popular an item to write with. Guinevere didn’t understand her, “How can you imagine something that does not exist?” “I know,” said the Lady looking at the pencil that had begun to spin faster, “clever aren’t I?” Guinevere stared at the Lady when she heard the pencil fly into a tree. “Hmm,” said Guinevere.

“I have been informed that you are the Lady of the Lake and that your sister is the Queen Maab of the open land, why is it that Merlin not known by another name?” asked Guinevere. “Oh but he is,” replied the Lady of the Lake but he chooses to keep that quiet. “He is known as the Lord of Learning in many circles where the mothers and fathers of children are said to congregate.”

Sat in the long room where the meals were served Guinevere was enjoying a get together of her ladies in waiting. The scribe for the meeting was Constance Green who liked to visit a pond of geese, rumour has it that is where she gained the quills for her pens from.
Harmony was known for her slow writing.

The Lady Katherine (Faith) happily agreed that the Harmony woman who washed the pots and pans in the castle’s kitchen was a slow writer and often called for her to hurry up. Guinevere thought it so funny when Faith reacted that way to Harmony though the Lady Katherine did not understand the humour that was being directed at her, even after Guinevere had the Lady Katherine she didn’t mean to offend her.

It was just the thought of a lady in waiting saying to another to bloody hurry up. King Arthur went to a lower dungeon to count his money, a task that often gave him enjoyment and this time was no different especially when King Arthur realized that Merlin had been in the dungeon without his permission, the King had no idea how Merlin had got in, or why?

Merlin explained that he had been in conversation with the Lady of the Lake and together they had agreed that a device that would be beneficial to the people in the twentieth century should be created to be ready for them. Merlin promised King Arthur that the piles of wealth were safe. Upon hearing his friend announce that, King Arthur felt much relieved.

As Merlin walked up the stone steps he heard Sir Lancelot in conversation with several of the ladies in waiting he was telling them of his wonderful complexion, he proudly told them that many of the women in the surrounding villages had wondered how he kept such a wonderful complexion. Sir Lancelot told them it was spreading a mix of horse poo and water on his skin.

He wandered away from the ladies doing his damnedest to stop the ladies in waiting from seeing or hearing his laughter, the thought that they might believe him helped his wrinkles form though he thought it worth it, imagining them smearing that god awful mixture on their faces. Merlin was concentrating his gaze on Andrew, he was so jealous of how any man with such a deficiency in height would need to resist the inclinations from each one of the wonderful women of the court of King Arthur.

Sir Lancelot grew green with envy that Merlin had King Arthur ear they would often laugh at sly comment Andrew was sure were directed at him. Merlin felt the laughter in him rise at the latest reason, the big red button was built for a doorbell to the dungeon. As the curtain swept across the stage Giles let free a gasp, it seemed as though the play had seemed to be real.

The End
