The creation of the vampire

I found this on Wikipedia:

"It was originally stated by Giles that the last of the Old Ones to leave this reality fed off of a human, mixing their blood, and that formed the first vampire. However, that was later disproven as Illyria remarks that vampires existed during her time (she was killed long before the Old Ones were run off)."

Maybe Illyria mean't vampires as in Ubervamps, because didn't the humans comes after the Old Ones?

It is true that there does seem to be a discrepancy there. The story as told by Giles (and Urkonn in Fray) seems to directly contradict Illyria's experiences. Your theory certainly sounds feasible. Since however, so little is known about this period of time in the Buffyverse, I think it's impossible to figure out exactly what happened in those days. I'd rather see someone try to reconcile dinosaurs and Old Ones first 😉

Yeah I was wondering that same thing. Illyria shouldn't have known about vampires nor should she have travelled a world without shrimp. Was there even shrimp millions of years ago? And if I remember correctly didn't she say when she was close to being killed off humans were just surfacing on the Planet. So she clearly couldn't know about vampires cause vampires were a new breed of demon that were only created when the very last Old One died off, which wasn't her.

The answer is simply that Giles is wrong. He was talking about the legend of how the first vampire was formed. There was no written history at that time, so the events were handed down as legends, as a verbal tradition, for generation after generation, each narrator either adding to or leaving out things that they had been told as "truth" by their elders. In other words, Giles was repeating what he had been told, and what he BELIEVED to be fact. Illyria was an actual eye witness to what happened. For generations, people believed that Prometheus stole fire from Zeus' chariot and gave it to the race of Man. Giles' story of the forming of the first vampire might be no more accurate than that.

On the other hand, Illyria might have just been lying to piss Angel off...

On the other hand, Anonymous416 might have a point too. Illyria might not have been referring to the actual vampires as we know them nowadays, but more like Neanderthals of vampires: Turok-Han. They existed in the days of the Old Ones, whereas modern vampires (the type that Spike and Angel belong to) only appeared on the scene when the last of the Old Ones left, meaning Giles was right too.
