OMG!!!! There is no thread pertaining to the almighty Riley Finn???!!!!! I cannot believe it. Ok I can believe it as he's not the most popular character, but I feel the need to defend him, for several reasons. One being my mum loves him and Ruffy with a passion, so I feel I'm doing a service to her in way and secondly I think he's a grossly misunderstoo character.

Now, do not misunderstand me. I'm not attempting to get you to like him, but maybe, perhaps open your mind to possibility of not writing him off just yet.

Now there are common criticisms I'd like to address, in regards to Ol' Captain America.

He's Boring!

I must admit, I wasn't far removed from this opinion when I first saw him grace our screens, but you know what? He actually grew on me.

I think the tempting thing was to focus too much on the duality of his character: "Joe Normal" vs "Demon Fighting soldier", but this duality is not what I wanted to focus on.

When we are presented with a character with Riley we immediately think "What drives him?" "Whats his background?" The truth is, that he's a little like a blank canvas of naivity which contrasts with the older and larger than life Angel. While Buffy loses innocence in her relationship with Angel, Riley loses his with Buffy. She introduces him to moral ambiguity and his world is turned up side down. He still, for the most part rises to the occasion and goes through the journey of self discovery.

We tend to shout at the screen "God can't you see you hold such ill-advised views" or something, likely to be less polite, yet forget that the characters don't watch the show nor necessarily ship Bangel, especially if the are love with the girl who was once part of it, nor do they swoon over soulless vampires with histories of killing, maiming and torture because they are 'cool' or 'interesting' and this is what piques my interest. We see the Verse through different eyes, redefining, black and white and of course grey. Riley is a dichotomy between Angel et al, is not boring to me but refreshing. Seeing a guy who actually still believes in courting, is almost beyond the cliche of representation of guys we see on the screen. He was a contrast, and I live for such differences

Riley Couldn't Handle The Fact That Buffy Was Stronger Than Him!!

Is Riley old fashioned? A little. Do I think he's a chauvanistic pig? Hardly. Do I believe Riley had an issue with Buffy being stronger than him? To a degree, but we have to look at this in context.

I have no doubt that he loved being in charge when he was in the Initiative but I don't think being physically weaker than Buffy or even deferring to her, was the main problem. He lost everything in a relatively short space of time, his job, friend, world view, super strength, it's enough for anyone to struggle. Buffy began to get stronger but she also grew distant all the while Riley loses his strength and begins to focus (maybe a little too much) on the relationship.

It reminds me of the the successful woman who was really moving up in her career but puts in on hold to have kids and sees her husband move up the ladder she was. She's genuinely happy for him but it reminds her what she lost, or is losing.

In all fairness, this would all be well and good but why does Buffy pull away from Riley? He believes because he's not strong enough for her and that is why he moves toward the crazed. People often go on about this, but they miss the point, his question for a long time is "Does she love me?"

Ruffy vs Bangel Vs Spuffy

Ruffy is certainly an underdog ship if ever I saw one. A lot of it hangs on two things: People don't like Riley and fans don't believe Buffy loved him. Well, the first thing is all about favourite characters etc, so I'm not going to delve into the subjectivity of that arena here but the second is interesting. Now in my heart of hearts, I don't believe she did love him, not because he's douche but because she never allowed herself to. At that point her heart was closed to romantic love. I honestly think she could have loved him.

The only person who I think she loved unequivocally is Angel anyway. Riley and Spike were always a question mark considering: She never got to see Riley before he flew off and the fact that she told Spike right before he was going to die that she loved him, meant it was never actually affirmed that she wanted to have a romantic relationship with him.

So with all this in mind, it comes down to preference, but I still think Ruffy had as much of a chance as the other mainstream ships, considering Spike barely having to balls to see her and Angel and Buffy being unable to consumate their relationship without the world almost ending and/or Buffy ending up in tears.

Bloodsucking Whores and Ultimatums

This possibly pisses off the fans the most and I'm in no way defending his actions. However, I still believe that addressing why he did it is useful when analyzing his character.

Now the common argument is that Buffy had a lot to deal with and couldn't take care of the boyf as well.

As I've said, many a time, Buffy is always going to have things to deal with but if she doesn't open up then she shouldn't be a relationship. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I don't believe you should push everyone out when things are hard but then be all kissy when things seems rosy. This is what hurt Riley and Buffy didn't get that until it was too late.

Of course she's not obligated to love him if she doesn't feel it. His ultimatum was never about "I'm in the right and you're in the wrong, so admit or I'm gone", it was "Love me or let me go" which when you think about it, is totally fair. Maybe Riley didn't explain it well enough because Buffy didn't get it until it was too late and most fans still don't get it.

So join me in the defence of Mr Riley Finn. The only boyfriend Buffy could bring home to mum, the only boyfriend who actually got on with Xander was intergrated well into the Scoobies. The guy who comes complete with first aid training. The guy who helped OZ (in the end). The guy who's attentive, loving, romantic, practical and doesn't drain her emotionally.

All hail Riley, or maybe hate him slightly less????

Awesome thread
I love love love you for posting this!!! I agree 100%!!! I always have loved Riley and it bothers me when people give those arguments that you mentioned about him. Because when it gets down to it, Riley was a great guy who the writers totally destroyed. I still think if Joss hadn't been so dead set in bringing Spike back, Buffy and Riley could have been perfect together.

I never had a problem LOOKING at Riley.. i must say. It was the way his character was that I didn't like (at least in the last half of season4 and beginning of season 5). I may or may not have had dreams about him to say the least. But I never liked who he became after he found out about Buffy, and then when he got all "she doesnt love me because she's not paying me any attention when her mother is going through a tough illness and she's trying to be all slayer-gal again."

Kana... I totally agree with you except for one thing. Riley never integrated himself to the Scooby Gang. But aside from that, i'm with you all the way. Peoples always says that Riley was sexist and he couldn't accept Buffy was stronger than him. But that wasn't the point! He felt like if he wasn't as strong as her she wouldn't want him anymore. Since after all she never told him she loved him and she(as she usually does) kept pretty much everything for herself instead of sharing.

Riley obviously was to blame too because he could have explained to Buffy his own feelings much earlier. I also agree with the persons who states that Riley lacked a personal goal. He was just there to support Buffy. This is probably why I never felt like he was part of the group... Because it didn't seems like he was in it for HIMSELF. He never really tried to create links with the others. He was just Buffy's boyfriend.

I could probably write 12543 paragraphs about this... But this subject has been beaten to hell. In the end Briley couldn't work because neither of them shared their feelings before it was too late.

First off I want to say I really enjoyed reading your post!
I see many of your points.
I kind of always say poor Riley when I get to season four of Buffy, then when I get to season five and Dawn makes the comment about Buffy's relationship with Angel I say well there goes this relationship.

I don't blame Riley at all for leaving the things that led up to it were so washy it is like I hate Riley for being with the vamps yet I feel bad for him because he didnt stand a chance. So both of them were to blame in this relationship. I get a lot of your points especially the Buffy not wanting to let Riley in. It was obvious that she didn't let him in even though she portrayed she did, then when Riley made that comment to Xander you could see he was hurt and knew this. So for the most part Buffy not letting Riley in loving him was the biggest downfall.

I will say Riley is a cutie and a nice man. 🙂

The whole Initiative thing drives me crazy. I hated that story line. But I think what irks me the most about Riley, is that he was so gosh darn negative. Buffy was going through A LOT with her mom and Dawn... and he was just so negative and self obsessed. I felt really bad for Buffy during that time because Riley was so... no the person I'd want to have around me if I was going through all of that.

I can see your point there. But Buffy did not let him be there for her in such a time of need IMO. Whether she did that not knowingly or on purpose who knows, all I can say is it was such a tough time for Buffy.

Good points there Kana. I didn't mind Riley.
He was more normal to say the least compared to Riley and Spike.
If Cordelia had not gone to Angel, I reckon her and Riley would of been pretty hot thinking about. This is the first time I have fought this, and I like.

This is one of the things where I find myself actively jumping to Riley's defence. "She doesn't love me because she's not paying me any attention..." or his being negative was not, or ever was far as I'm concerned about him being annoyed that Buffy was distracted during Joyce's illness. That was just another way in which she pushed him away just like she had been all season.

Riley was not self obsessed. He wanted so desperately to help Buffy, to share her burdens, to be the person she vents to because that's what a relationship is but she didn't care. I'm not expecting her to have sat and worried about how Riley was feeling when she already had so much to deal with with her mother, that's not my point. I think that even Buffy thought that was Riley's argument and she was also misunderstood. The way he was treated by Buffy left him, quite justifiably, questioning his relationship and what he was even doing holding on to it and when you're in love with someone, I imagine that's kinda hard to take. Like Kana said, this is not a justification of his actions but, like with every other character, giving him the benefit of the doubt and at least trying to recognise he didn't do it because he's a pig.

And I have to disagree with you Zalos, and agree with Kana, that Riley actually did integrate himself with the Scoobies, much more than any other partners of hers did. He was really good friends with Xander, he was concerned about Willow (S4), he willingly let go of everything he knew about himself in order to save Oz and they were all pretty cool with him. For me I'd say that's integrated.

Anyway, I could go on and on too, but I only wanted to join you in defending him, Kana. I completely agree with everything you said. 🙂

Ok..I never particularly liked Riley, I found him edge-less (is that a word??) and not that interesting but I don't hate him. I like what his relationship with Buffy brought out in Buffy's character development. I'm sure she never loved him and for the reason you pointed out: because she never allowed herself to..I believe her heart was partially shut down after Becoming Pt.2...she was never the same after that. What can I say? Sometimes I almost feel bad for him when he realizes Buffy doesn't love him but in the end, he was needed to the Buffyverse, to show Buffy with a normal guy, and to Buffy herself to make her realize a bit more about herself and what she wants and needs to give and receive in a relationship. That's what I ultimately think. I don't like him but I don't hate him.

him being annoyed that Buffy was distracted during Joyce's illness.

He had no right to be annoyed Buffy was distracted. I'd be distracted from my relationship too if my mother was about to die. ESPECIALLY if I had a little sister who was in SERIOUS danger and an absent father.

If you keep that quote in context, and take it as a whole, I actually said that he wasn't annoyed at Buffy for that:

"She doesn't love me because she's not paying me any attention..." or his being negative was not, or ever was far as I'm concerned about him being annoyed that Buffy was distracted during Joyce's illness. That was just another way in which she pushed him away just like she had been all season.

He would have had a right to be annoyed in the sense that everyone has a right to feel how they feel, whether it's selfish or not. Of course he's entitled to feel however he wants to feel, but like I said, he wasn't actually annoyed about it at all.

I too understand that she would be distracted but what Riley was hurt by was that given how long they'd been together and everything they'd gone through, he wanted to be the one she leant on. He wanted to comfort her and the fact she pushed him away, hurt him. He was never annoyed at her for paying Joyce more attention than him.

But see... I feel like it was him being annoyed Buffy wasn't paying attention to him. I mean, I get he just wanted her to lean on him and ask for his help... but that's not her style. To be as supportive as he could, he should have let her know he was there if she needed help... but not have reacted so strongly when she didn't hang off his shoulder.

If it was a standalone incident, I'd agree but this was the straw that broke the camel's back. She had been closing herself off to him emotionally since Buffy vs Dracula and I think that's why he reacted in the way he did because he was finally hit with the reality of his failing relationship.

I'm not saying that Riley handled it the best way possible, by any means, but I can understand why it went down the way it did. Riley wasn't blameless, but Buffy sure wasn't either.

Riley wasn't annoyed that Buffy was "distracted". He was annoyed that Buffy wouldn't let him be there for her like he wanted to be. He wanted to be her "big strong man", because Riley was an old-fashioned man who believed in chivalry and taking care of his lady. He was hurt that she didn't feel like she could break down with him.

These things are so easy to say, and so hard to do. I've had to grow well into my thirties before learning that sometimes, the right thing to do is to back off. Being a chatterbox myself, shutting up doesn't come easily. When someone we love is going through a hard time, we want to be there for them. The thing is, being there for them in the way they need is often not the same as being there for them the way that comes naturally for us. We are all formed by the culture we grow up in. Blaming your parents has an expiry date, by all means, but I don't think Riley was a fool for not managing to break away from the boundaries his ideas of how to be a supportive partner created. His own life had been so chaotic those last years that he was not even close to the equilibrium you need to handle someone else's problems well.

I think Buffy and Riley could have been really good for each other if they hadn't both gone through such tumultuous experiences at the same time. As it were, the timing turned out all wrong and we know how it ended. This wasn't just because of Buffy, just because of Riley or just because real life got in the way. For a relationship to work, a multitude of factors needs to be right. When it doesn't work, it's often just as many factors that are wrong.

Love your post Kana and all other Riley-defenders! I do consider how difficult it was for Riley at this time- of course he was purpose-less, his whole world and beliefs came crashing down around him. Sure, that'll make a guy or girl flounder for awhile. We see Buffy flounder around from time to time (& Angel too of course) about this same exact point. I honestly do get angry at Buffy WRT Briley: she always says she wants a normal life, a normal boyfriend, a normal relationship. But it's either obviously not what she really wants, or she just can't do it at this moment (she's not ready- the cookie dough analogy).

And the vamp whore is definitely a super-low point for him. But is it really that different from Buffy's relationship with Spike (at least at the beginning)?

I do like his apparent character development after he leaves, at least the little bit we get to see of it in season 6 & in season 8 (I haven't read the Riley one-shot yet).

That is a very good way of looking at it. Buffy did always complain she wanted a normal boyfriend and life then when she got one it just didnt do. I am glad she took the chance to experience it but for some reason she didnt let it in. I also agree with his world crashing down everyone has the right to go through a time like that. I didn't blame him to much when watching it is just after multiple times I always felt what was the point to Riley he never really got a stand out story.

I loved when he came back in season 6 he seemed like he had grown so much and got the life he needed. Good for Riley 🙂

It kind of pisses me off that the hottest chicks almost always go for the bad boys ... but such is life. And such was Buffy. We all know Riley wouldn't work out in the end. And it's not about him being weaker than Buffy ... it's about him not being a Bad Boy.

I don't hate Riley as a character, but as a love interest for Buffy he was doomed to fail. I think he might have been a better choice for Willow had Willow not become gay/bi/whatever. Or even just an ex soldier turned Scoobie member without any romantic attachments. But Ruffy got old fast and had to end....
