Ok so I started watching the show when I was seven and as a child Xander was one of my favorites however as an adult I understand more about the problems a lot of people have with his character. After recently having re watched the last three episodes of season 6 I started to think about what Xander should have been vs the way they choose to do him.
Now from what I understand Joss started Xander out as a version of himself in high school then wanted to keep him the every man or the normal one as a way of reminding of us and Buffy of the regular world in these increasingly supernatural situations. The idea behind this is fine but the way the choose to execute it was where they went wrong.
The way they did it kind of put Xander in a box and severely limited his character development and kept him the comic relief which got old after while got old. They relied to much on his jokes to prevent situations the characters were in from getting to serious. The only time we even really know what is going through his head or how he was emotionally handled something was when he left Anya at the alter because he allowed the fear they might end up like his parents override his better judgement. This is also the only time we see him dealing with the implications that his home life as a child and teenager were bad. We knew it was there but we never got to see him dealing with it at all on an emotional level. Then back to the episodes I re watched, Xander spends most of this time feeling sorry for himself but I had a hard time being sympathetic with him because we never really see Xander try to be anything other than the box the writers put him in. So this is what I thinks should have happened.
The writers should have had Xander learning martial arts and diving more into his soldier memories. They should have shown us more of the emotional struggles and fears Xander had from his drunken and neglecting parents.(one thing I was always very confused by was in the beginning of Hells Bells Xander appeared to be on pretty good terms with his parents which made no sense to me given what they had implied about them up until this point) They should have had him trying to juggle a career he found and really enjoyed as well as helping with whatever the hellmouth through at them that week. They should have showed him struggling to keep up with Buffy, Anya and Willow. They should have had him realize that three people he loved the most were always going to miles ahead of him in some ways (Buffy physically and in a leadership sense, Willow with her magical power and Anya with her 1200 years of experience) We should have seen him struggle with all of this more then if the writers still had him leave Anya at the alter it would haven't felt so hollow. Then finally we should have seen him come to terms with himself and except that just because he would never be as powerful doesn't mean he couldn't make a difference too. Then he and Anya could have made peace. Basically we should have seen him do more than just exist. Some of the things people don't like about him would have still been there but they would have made more sense, and we would have seen him eventually grow out of some of them. That is the Xander we should have had.
