Despite the fact that Democrats proposed bills in the House and Senate to reinstate the draft...

Despite the fact that only Democrats voted for the House bill...

Despite the fact that Bush said he would veto the bill if it ever got to his desk, and despite the fact that at the debate last night he assured Americans he would never reinstate the draft...

Kerry has recently made accusations stating that he believes that if George W. Bush is elected, he most likely would re-instate the draft.

But yet Rumsfeld and other military officials believe that our voluntary service is working out just fine. And with President Bush making these promises, why does Kerry continue to lie?

Because he knows it would cause a political downfall for Bush. Hardly anyone really supports the draft. Not to mention that Bush would probably lose all his support in the 18-25 year old range of voters if they believed this claim to be true.

Although Kerry & his supporters continue to spout this bs, its more likely for the Democratic party to re-instate the draft.

If the draft is restarted, 'dwarf better make room for me in his house because I'm moving to Canada. I feel that the draft is so wrong. Forcing people outta their homes and to a foreign country where they'll be on death's door everyday. Me, personally, I highly doubt I'd come back from a war if I went. I think the draft is unfair. We have enough people in the army right now. I also think that we should bring the troops back from Iraq because we're not going to be able to kill all of Al-Queda because there are so many of them around that continent.

I completely agree with you. It's really unfair for people to just be ripped away from their lives to go pretty much be killed. It's just not right.

hero i totaly get that point of view, and i feel with your despair!!! here in norway we have a draft.. and i think that sucks, even though i'm a girl. cause i don't want my boyf to go... he has his draft time on hold cause of school. he might get a letter next summer though,and then he will file for another, cause he will still be in school.

i think mil.draft is bad, here in norway you usually end up like on the otherside of the country.. like way up north if your from the south.. 🙁 or the east... poor guys, stuck up there in the cold...
 
A lot of younger people agree with me, probably almost all younger people agree with me, but people under the age of 18 don't have the right to vote in America. Is that the way it is all over the world too? I think one you reach high school you should be able to vote because that's when world issues really begin to affect you. Are there any older people who think the same way? Sometimes adults think of important thoughts that most young people don't. I still got 2 years left before I have to get my draft papers, but still, I have friends older than me who could be torn away from me to go face god knows who what.
 
I think the problem with lowering the vote age past 18 is that minors are still often under the control of their parents, and therefore might only be voting the way theri parents or relatives tell them is right. Also, teenagers (and I speak from experience) are generally apathetic to the world around them, and I feel that a voting bloc that only cares about one issue: the draft, and doesn't really pay attention to the other issues, should maybe wait a little while before casting their votes.

Well, I pay attention to other world events. The draft is just one that's been on my mind lately because I saw a commercial about it on MTV. I guess that the problem lies with exactly what you said, eset. I think the only thing the younger generation can do is hope that adults with brains actually go out and vote so someone can speak for us.
 
You know the thread was started by someone who wanted to point out that Kerry was accusing Bush of the very thing that the Democrats had been trying to get through congress.

Now as to the question of "is a draft fair ?" As a matter of fact I think it could be if everyone served. The idea of having young people leave their homes and schools for 2 years to serve their country isn't tragic, it can actually build character. It also might make those politicians who have children and grandchilren pause when thinking of marching us off to war. When people can get out of service by extending their schooling or making babies the draft is not fair. The system we have right now is unfair. It results in the poor, the disenfranchised , fighting while the children of the upper middle class and the wealthy enjoy the fruits of the blood that is shed by those who do serve. And in a fair draft those who are genuine pacifists ( not just cowards ) would serve in other capacities. Medics or bridge buliders or something .
 
My uncle went to a military academy and he told me that the army breaks you down until your nothing, but then builds you up so that you feel like you can achieve anything. It does build character. But, then people get shipped off to war and might die. Would you be ok if your father had to leave tomorrow because he had to go fight a war? Do only men have to sign draft papers or do both men and women do it?

Good Question. In the past the draft was for men ages 18 and up, but with the changes that have been made in our military (women in combat) this indeed would be a great question for debate between the candidates.
 
Someone earlier mentioned MTV in the discussion of the draft.

MTV is nothing but liberal bs. Though RW & LB are alright shows. But still nonetheless, they are trying to influence young voters on a biased stance.

There is supposed to be some MTV special about this coming up, I think someone mentioned that above, but how much do you wanna bet that the facts you read above you will be construed in a completely opposite fashion?

I do agree that if the poor have to serve, then the affluent should too. Its just not fair.

The reason I created this thread was because Kerry was lying about Bush, saying something Bush would do if re-elected. But the chances of Kerry re-instating the draft are far greater, since he does seem to cave into the desires of other powerful rats, oops I mean, Democrats.

as far as i can tell, this isn't saying you Have to serve, its saying if you do you get this stuff. maybe i missed something on the page.


as far as im aware, jk's never said bush will, and if he did, he prolly is wrong, but..service rates Are dropping. so..more dying, getting wounded and no new soldiers, what happens then?...

i looked at all the sites, never saw kerry say bush Will reinstate the draft, just that its more likely. and..liar's a harsh term. its not like the republicans dont spin just as much if not more than democrats.

its almost impossible Not to be biased. seeing the way you said stuff, im guessing your for bush, which is influencing everyone here in some way. its nigh impossible to be impartial and unbiased.

and the trouble with pulling out of iraq, is the people left there, and the companies and the turmoil and that gov't not being strong enough to stand on its own. now if the us could pull out and have the un there, maybe it'd be ok, but..right now, its pretty much america.

if its not outright lies, its called political spin meant to influence ppl. like hm...
bush says kerry's opposed to the right to own a gun. he's not. kerry wants more Safety things for guns, like screenings and safety devices. kerry's a gun owner and hunter.
