Does anyone else here read The Dresden Files novels by Jim Butcher?

It is my current favorite series and it deserves more recognition. I don't know why it hasn't reached Harry Potter's or Twilight's level of popularity.
 
The books are pretty different. The show was good for what is was, but the books are so much better. For one, Harry's magic isn't hampered by sci-fi channel's meager budget. Also, he uses a staff to do magic, not a hockey-stick like in the tv show. Bob is different, just a talking skull, but still as awesome. There are too many things to list. The point is its good.

There are 13 books out so far and the tv show never used anything from beyond the second book. So at this point in the books it is much different than the tv adaptation.
 
I listen to the audiobooks when I drive. James Marsters reads them (minus the Spike accent, unfortunately) They make long trips by car much more enjoyable.
 
My brother read the first few, and wasn't overly impressed with them (well, he does have crazy high standards, but...). He said they were okay, but overrated. Because apparently TvTropes loves them. But he said that the books get better as the series goes on. I think the thing he gripes with the most is the plot and the predictability of it.
I haven't read them myself... but maybe I'll get the audio book, coz, you know, James Marsters.
 
I have the entire collection on my Kindle (13 novels and Side Jobs anthology), blasted through them in a couple of months and love them, I've even started on a few props.

I saw the TV show 4 years ago when it aired and really didn't care for it, but it grew on me, got the DVD's and enjoyed it more on a second viewing. But the books are far superior, love them.
 
Ewwwww, just no. He met her when she was in footy PJ's at like 8 years old, I don't care if they've grown up since, Harry just doesn't feel that way about her. Plus Charity *will* kill him, lol.

Well, we all know Harry is an idiot when it comes to women so I wouldn't be surprised if they end up together. Plus, over the course of the book series his views of Molly are slowly, very slowly changing. He now openly admires her body. He still says he has no romantic feelings for her, but not long ago he was saying that he would never admire her body like that.

As for him knowing her since she was a child, yes that would be a hurdle for the two (well, for Harry anyway) to overcome. But I figure they will both live to be around 400 years old anyway, so age doesn't really matter for wizards.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't be too upset if they didn't happen. But they make more sense than Harry/Murphy at any rate.

Charity's reaction is a huge reason I want this ship to happen. You have to admit, it would be hilarious.
 
After what happened to Michael and the tenuous new understanding between him and Charity, Molly being too much of a reminder of Elaine, I just don't see him risking it, nevermind the fact that the White Council might see it as a breach of his mentorship, which has some nasty implications in itself.

As weird as it might be, Harry/Lasciel is kinda better...

Is Lasciel still even around? Her coin is where again? Its hard to keep track of this stuff sometimes.

I thought Harry/Luccio was a good/decent pairing, but since Luccio was mind-controlled at the time I don't think she'll give it another try.

Molly being a reminder of Elaine? What do you mean? And Harry isn't her mentor any more. He's been declared officially dead, and now Molly is under the tutelage of Harry's Fairy Godmother. I noticed in GS that Harry is starting to think of Molly as an adult. If I remember correctly he even stopped using the nickname Grasshopper.

One of the most affecting lines for me in Ghost Story was a line from Harry: "You’re one hell of a woman, Molly.”

In fact, that whole conversation in the Denny's was my favorite part of the book. No action there, but the character interaction was brilliant.
 
Sorry, Lasciels Shadow, assuming that it wasn't the last glimmer of her existance that was the one to trick harry in Changes. The real Lasciel would more than likely kill him outright should he take up her coin, and sense what happened to her Shadow.

Luccio annoyed me, I don't know why, she just did. I never liked Harry with her but then, Susan's not an option anymore either.

I know the Molly dynamic is growing and Molly is 24 now, but it's still weird, I remember her as a little punk goth 14 year old way back in Death Masks. And her mental state is less than "ok" right now, Harry isn't running on all batteries himself these days. Molly is a vunerable young women learning to use a skill under the tutaledge of someone who doesn't know the merit of a hot shower and a proper budget nevermind teaching impressionable youth, the Dustin/young Harry thing must be luming in his mind all the time.

I never cared for Susan at all, so I'm glad she's gone. I never liked Elaine either for that matter.

I would agree with you about Molly being young and vulnerable before Ghost Story came out, but she's come a very long way since Death Masks. Its not just a crush she has on Harry, its real actual love. She was willing to never even see Harry again because she and Harry believed it was the only way to save his daughter. And after GS, she definitely doesn't have him on a pedestal anymore; she now sees that he is just a man.

So I think Molly's mature enough to be in a real relationship with him. Not that I want it to happen right away, but in 3 or 4 books I can see it being a real possibility
 
I love these books. I started listening to the series because of James. 😀 But I really like them a lot, I've listened to the first three and have the next three actual books on order so I can read them soon.

I can already tell that the books are going to keep getting better and better as the series goes on.

Plus it's pretty amazing how Jim Butcher is capable of having like 10 different people out out to kill Harry but it doesn't feel overdone or unbelievable. Very cool.

Yup, the books do keep getting better.
Hmm, well maybe.

I actually like Harry having taken up the mantle though, means we get to see more of Mab and Lea.

Lea is one of my favourite characters in the whole series, she's a lot like my last girlfriend but still, hopefully we'll be seeing more of her.
 
I remember when I was reading GS for the first time, I almost choked on my drink when I read this line:

"So. You've finally been inside me. I feel like I should be offering you a cigarette." - Molly Carpenter

Yeah, I don't like the new "Rag Lady" Molly one bit, I'm pretty sure shes going to get herself killed long before the final trilogy.

Really? I love it. It has given her some much needed development. She's finally seeing how hard Harry has had it as protector of Chicago. She's trying to fill in for him in is absence, but with Harry dead his reputation no longer keeps away the nasties. Molly isn't as strong as him so she has to resort to killing the bad guys, whether they be supernatural or human. I like it.

I don't think she will get herself killed. Harry noted that she is stronger now than she ever was before, and we find out that Leah is training her. Leah wouldn't waste her time with Molly if she didn't think she would last long.
 
Perhaps, but its not like the Winter Court are entirely stable, Leah loves to play with people, the more she hurts them or the more they're already hurt the better, I see it more like a Pitbull thrashing a Squirrel in its teeth, that or shes training herself up the Hellhound that Harry never was, bringing out Molly's power and agression without worrying about what it does to her mentally.

Maybe thats me being pessimistic but I love Leah's character far more than Molly's, I know which one I want to see more of in the series 😉

I'll admit to enjoying Leah more than Molly in the earlier books, but the last few stories have actually changed it around for me.

I like Leah well enough, but she seemed out of character in GS. Agreeing to answer 3 of Harry's questions, but answered a hell of a lot more. It just seems off to me.
