Yesterday, I watched the episode "Normal Again" for the first time in my entire life. I had heard numerous things about it over the internet (How Charmed stole the idea and such, etc.). But being how I like to view things in order, I waited until I came to its disc on Season 6. I can't really begin to put into words how much the very idea of the episode affected me, but I'll try my best to make my somewhat random thoughts into organized paragraphs.

While I was watching, my mind was basically running wild after a particularily long day at school, and so when I came home, I just wanted to watch Buffy in an attempt to cheer me up a bit.

The scenes of the illusions (or alt. dimension depending on how you look at it) where Buffy's in the mental instituion made me feel somewhat sad and then my brain started kicking in and thinking about what lay underneath the surface of the episode itself. And so, my somewhat tired brain came up with this.

The reason I was affected by this episode so much was that it made me kinda shake out of the haze I usually go into when I watch TV and movies, and realize that what I was seeing wasn't real. It made me think that maybe the show I loved so much really COULD really be just Buffy's imagination, and that nothing I had seen up until that point was real. None of the emotions I had seen from the characters/actors/actresses wasn't real, the plots that I loved hadn't been real, etc.

Even more thinking came later that night when I couldn't sleep, and I figured, what the hell, I'll think about stuff for my fanfics. But my thoughts kept drifting back to that episode, the emotion it made me feel completely defying explanation. It was kinda like a realization that eventually we get older, and our dreams and needs change, they go through changes, and eventually we realize, we can't live in those dreams forever. Eventually, we have to move on.

Hopefully that whole thing doesn't make me sound like I should be locked up somewhere, but I really just wanted to get that out of me.

Interesting... I wouldn't say that I experienced anything like that when I was watching it, but what you just said will definitley have me thinking about that for a while.

Wow, that was deep.

Look, I'll start by saying that that episode sucks. Seriously. Joss has even said that they screwed up the ending and that it isn't meant to be taken that Buffy is just crazy. I hated the way that episode ended, interesting or not, because of exactly this. It takes people out of the illusion of the show. Buffy isn't like LOST, where the entire concept of the series has some super introspective and reality shaking revelation. To suddenly throw that sort of curveball, basically out of left field (yes, I'm aware the baseball metaphors don't really work with one another), was just dumb. Plain dumb.

And look, about the whole growing-up-and-needing-to-move-on part of your post, sure, that's true in some aspects of life, but at the end of the day man, it's your life. Our dreams and needs change, sure, but only if we allow them to. It's your life, you control it, and anyone who says any different is full of crap.

You want a perfect example? I've loved Buffy since I was 15 years old. I'm 22 now. During that time a lot has changed in my life, but Buffy has always been there. Why? Because I never stopped taking important elements from the show. It's the same reason why I'm still reading comic books as avidly now as I did when I was 12. You don't have to let go of anything you don't want to, and please, don't let a crappy attempt at ending ambiguously make you believe otherwise. If you want episodes to make you think, watch "Not Fade Away", "Chosen", "Hero" and "I will remember you". Those are the ones that have truly affected me.

I can honestly say that Buffy, the show and the character, has played a very large role in making the person I am today. I want to be like Buffy (and with her, but that's a whole nother' psychological mess...), and I've used her as a role model. And I'm very confident in saying that it's worked. I'm proud of the person I am today, and I have no shame in saying I owe a lot of that to Buffy, to Angel, to Bruce Wayne and to Hal Jordan. People don't like that? To hell with them. WE choose who we want to be man, not anyone else.

(See...now you've gone and got me all fired up...)

I wasn't trying to say that I was giving up on anything, but that was just one of my own thoughts about what was lying underneath the surface of the main idea of the episode. 🙂 In truth, there are episodes that have affected me more so than "Normal Again", and all of them positive. "I Will Remember You", the ending of "Grave", "City Of...", "Angel", and so on. It's just that that episode did, as you say, rip me out of the illusion that the show is.

Joss said they screwed up the ending? 😱 Seriously? I think that was one of my favorite episodes of that whole season!

I wasn't trying to say anybody stole anything, was just something I seemed to recall hearing about around the internet. I didn't really believe in the whole thing. 🙂

I love "Normal Again" because it makes sense but also because it gives Buffy hope. One day she may wake up, leave the hospital and get a chance to find happiness. As The Slayer, everything she'll ever face is suffering and death.

"Normal Again" is not a sad episode, it's actually pretty positive.

It was kinda like a realization that eventually we get older, and our dreams and needs change, they go through changes, and eventually we realize, we can't live in those dreams forever. Eventually, we have to move on.

Or we can follow our dreams. It's not easy but it can be done.

@The Dark Avenger

"VR.5" did something like that in 1995 in an episode "Escape" though not to a such degree, I think. Very psychedelic and pretty complex episode.

Not sure I entirely understood your post (I'm still a bit sleepy) but here's my 2cents on that episode:

I don't hate it. But I find it really depressing. Because it opened the possibility that what I had been seeing for 5 years was made up. I know the show's not real, that there aren't really vampires and demons and vampire slayers in the world, but watching Buffy made me think about the "what ifs". How cool it would be if it did. And Normal Again kinda crushed that up.

It's a good thing they didn't use it as a season/series finale. I would've been really depressed if that had happened.

I guess your thoughts prove that the episode served its purpose. In my eyes, this episode is made to provoke you to think about all that.

The episode always has a huge effect on me. It makes me feel very uncomfortable. The feeling very difficult to describe. Of course I know that all this isn't real, that the series is pure fiction. But I guess that's the reason why I want it to be real in the show.

Another great and interesting thing about the episode is that nobody can say which one of the worlds is real and which isn't. That's up to the viewer to decide. As I said, I want the world with vampires to be real.
And by the way, if I ever have some mental problems and start 'living in my own world', I hope it's gonna be the one with vampires and Slayers 😀

And that's the point I was trying to get across! 😀 Just the very way the episode was written made me feel uncomfortable for some strange reason that I found lacked any solid reason. I wasn't trying to say that the episode had made me go off and be depressed (Which I hope that no-one got the feeling I was. I'm generally a happy person 😀), but it made me think.

Wow didn't know that most people aren't as impressed as I am with this episode, it's actually one of my favorites (even though it didn't shake my world like it did for you Evil Angelus), but I just loveeeed the idea of the Buffyverse being just a figment of the imagination of some crazy girl in an asylum, I hadn't heard of that concept before, & even though I watched Charmed many times, I still don't remember it ever happening in it, so I guess it wasn't as well made as it was in Buffy ..
& what makes me love this episode even more, is when Dark Willow tells Buffy, "And insane asylums are the comfy alternative?", it just makes you understand that much more the pain Buffy was feeling, to think of asylums as a happy place, wow that takes a lot!

I just watched this episode and the ending was well, I can't decide how I feel about the ending. The episode itself was great, and the concept that the Slayerverse is just the figment of some crazy girl's delusion is cool, but I feel like it cheapens the series a bit if that is how it really is.

You know what I just thought about? There's no way that it was all in Buffy's head. When she "slips back" into Sunnydale and what is supposedly a figment of her imagination, it's always from her perspective, right?

Then how does that explain everything that happens in L.A. on the Angel series? If this is all in Buffy's head, Sunnydale, Angel, the monsters, everything, why the hell do we have an entire five seasons of Angel's adventures in L.A. without Buffy?

It doesn't make sense. It all happened.

Well, it could be "the whole world" was in Buffy's delusional brain, so ANYTHING happening anywhere in the Buffyverse could be one of her delusions... if you want to take it that far. 🙂

I've heard a lot of people say that they hate the idea of Normal Again being the "reality" of the show, that Buffy really is just nuts...and that's never bothered me because I always tell myself, "Well, Buffy isn't real. It's just a show. So if the plot of the show is that we're watching some insane girl hallucinate, I'm okay with that as long as I get to watch it" haha I know a lot of people don't like that episode, but I love it. Also which episode of Charmed supposedly copied NA? I've seen almost every episode of that show because I watched it everyday for a year at 6am as I got ready for school ha...

I've been rewatching Charmed season 4 and just saw the episode with the same concept last night. I think I prefer the Charmed ep, to be honest. Not sure why. Maybe because it's not so intense, or maybe it's just my unbelievable love for Piper Halliwell.😀

Its interesting that Normal Again affects you like that. It's definitely not my favourite episode. I think I've only seen it once.

what's the name of the episode?
Buffy isn't like LOST, where the entire concept of the series has some super introspective and reality shaking revelation.

There are definitely some very introspective and reality shaking revelations in both Buffy and Angel in my opinion. Although I am known to overanalyze anything and everything.

I should clarify. I didn't mean that Buffy isn't deep, or that it doesn't have moments (many of them) that make you think and consider things in a new way. It totally does, and I've taken a lot of elements from Buffy and Angel that have made me a better person in my own life.

What I meant was that the way "Normal Again" ended was at odds with everything we'd seen prior to it. It came out of nowhere, and I felt like it was a cheap ploy to make that episode stand out. Right from the beginning of LOST, you have the distinct impression that there is some weird sh** going down. From the very opening scene, there is a very pervasive sense that things are not as they seem, that there is a deeper meaning waiting just around the bend. The show was built that way intentionally. And it used that sense to convey larger themes to the viewer.

Buffy and Angel were never constructed that way. They absolutely did get across big themes and thoughts, no doubt, but it was always done through metaphor, through character depth (not that LOST didn't have character depth, because they did, big time). "Normal Again" didn't fit that at all.

To be honest, I don't know what the hell they were going for with that ending. All I know is that, for me at least, it didn't work and it went completely against the grain of everything we'd seen before.

I'm pretty sure it's called Brain Drain. 🙂
