Seeing as how the finale was the lowest so far for the series (4.7 tv share) ABC needs to rerun this finale within the month while there is still a buzz to get back those fans that left the show because it got so damn complicated, frustrating and confusing as hell. This series is going to be a fantastic teaching tool in creative writing courses. The lesson will be never as a writer be more clever then the viewer, it insults them. Give the viewer the 'thought' they are smarter then you are but have that creative twist to keep the fans hooked and most importantly not feel stupid when the twist is revealed. For 3 years this show kept stacking the mysteries and stories with no resolutions...until now!
This was a fantastic season ender and I can't wait for the next season. So many answers in two hours then the last two years. No lie at the end of last season I said it was John Locke in the casket (no I did not break my arm patting myself on the back for that one). If everyone needs to go back to the island there are two characters that are conveniently left hanging, Jin and Desmond (maybe Michael too). They also need to go back and what about the people in the boat that were on their way to the freighter?
Can't wait for the explanation on how the island moved and not to mention how is it that Jacob, who seems to have taken over Jack's dad's body for himself, can leave the island? Also the Charles Widmore story is going to get interesting now that Sun approached him. Is Kate going to listen to Claire about leaving Aaron at home and not bring him back to the island?
Lost doesn't do as well as it used to in overnights, maybe, but it's not exactly a dying show, either. It gains over 30% with timeshifted viewing, and that's not including the viewers who watch on their DVR after the seven days. Add that on top of downloads and streaming and the show gains a LOT more viewers than what you see the next day.
And Lost is a cult show anyway, even when Lost was at the height of its popularity, the producers said they did not expect it to get that many viewers - it was always expected to be a cult show, so why should it have to fight to keep a couple of extra million people? Plus I'm sure that once the series is over and people realize that yes, the writers DID know what they were doing, and that, yes, everything WILL make sense in the end, a LOT of people will probably watch it on DVD.
And the show is still #1 in the demos which is what really counts.
Anyway, on the actual episode itself. Not as completely mindblowing as the season three finale. However, it was pretty damn good. There is no question in my mind now that Lost is THE best show on TV, ever...
The only thing I can find to complain about is the final shot...I didn't think it packed quite enough punch, after waiting a year seeing John was a little anticlimatic, and I think they should have ended on another dramatic note.
Can't wait to find out what happened to the island, and to see what the show is like next year. It will be weird, but definitely interesting.
