Well I watched Empty Spaces again, and still I cant fall on anyone else's side other than Buffy. I'll give one example of this: Anya's look after she's made her speech defines everything about this episode... self obsession. I defy anyone to look at Anyas look and draw any other conclusion. She was motivated soley by getting a one-up on Buffy. Anya was WRONG, she not better because she lucky...she better because she is a hero... if youve watched buffy for 7 years...im freaking sorry but she is the heroes of heroes.
But the defining moment of this episode? Just how right Buffy was. She was right about Caleb hiding something, she was right about Faith now being able to lead them... FYI, faith jumped on the first plan that came to her (much like people accused Buffy of doing here) and it ended up in death...spelled D.E.A.T.H.
There is a lot going on here. A lot of emotion, and I agree Kana that everyone has their point of view, and reading your posts goes a long way of defining them so that you can understand their character and relate to them but I believe a lot of this is about connecting with your favorite character. A 'giles can do no wrong' kind of attitude. Not that im saying thats you, please dont misunderstand....
Buffys rejection had nothing to do with who she was IMO, it had a lot to do with others understanding of what a Slayer really is and what she represents and the different characters coming to terms with this. Watching empty spaces dosn't leave you with this feeling but watching how the season plays out and just how DEAD ON buffy was about the first demonstrates this.
One final point, Buffys isolation allows her to think clearly, to think like the slayer. Its what allowed her to be (quite clearly) the most influential slayer in history because she was able to manage this isolation with the need for friends. The slayer is the 'general in charge' thats needed to defeat something as big as the First Evil, and none of her friends grasp this despite ironically asking continually to see the 'big picture'. When it came down to it they ALL rejected her. She needed this to complete her mission and ultimately her friends form an intergral part of who she is but the concept of 'the slayer is always alone' is a point that even S8 proves evident.
That said... S8 goes a long way of showing just how unified they are as a team, which demonstrates they have come a long way since this episode. Clearly Buffy is still alone but the scoobies seem to understand what it means to be a slayer and the slayer seems to understand how to lead better than ever.
