Ok so this has been thrown out a lot over the last few months (probably more like year and a half but still). Is The First an all knowing being or a fool?

Hm not really impotent unless he is corporeal I would think 😉

I would have to side with all knowing being. With the exception that the First does not truly know everything. But a good deal of things, yes.

The First was smart enough to sense the disruption in the slayer line.

I've always wondered:

Does the First hear everything? Did it hear Buffy telling the Potentials that they were going to be activated? Does it hear every thought or word spoken? Or does it only hear the things that are spoken by evil beings or in moments when you lack humanity? Is it really connected to every living human? Does it have all the memories of those who have died in the Buffyverse?

I would say that it most likely exists on a higher plane that would allow it to know most all things, if not everything.

Plus that mofo has some connections.

Big props for the use of the word "mofo"
The First for me was a very strange entity. I mean we are supposed to believe that it was the personification of all the world's evil and that it had existed since the beginning of time. Okay then, so why was it such a big loser then?

I mean given the fact it was so very old you would imagine that it would have had gained the intelligence to create a better plan than the one it came up with.

If i had been The First i would have had all of Buffy's allies killed first thereby weakening her considerably. I would have had one of my Bringers torch her home so as to destroy her base of operations. I would have had Buffy captured and held in very strong and heavy chains until i'd eliminated all the potentials and then i would have killed Buffy.

That sound really evil to you? Me too! So why couldn't the source of all evil come up with something as simple as that? 😉

I would have just bombed sunnydale so noone survived and then open the hellmouth
I did think the First was pretty pathetic actually. With all it's power and servants it should have been able to do a lot more than that.

However, it didn't so we can be thankful, otherwise Buffy would have had a far less triumphant ending...

This question is hard to answer since The First isn't a person, but more like a being or a force or whatever. To me it is only evil, which means it can't really think logically or understand things that doesn't have to do with evil. It plans things, because they are the way to evil. Just like it felt the disruption of the slayer line because it is something that changes everything having to do with evil I don't believe The First could hear or know everything that happened, but if Willow would have secretly made that spell so that all potentials became slayers, I believe The First would have felt that as well. Ok, I can't describe what I think The First is, but I have a real thougt/idea/theory, I promise 😀

To me, the First was the embodiment of the spirit of evil. Have you ever noticed that it exposed the characters' darker nature, while each character was alone? And even in "Chosen", it came very close to achieving its goal, when Buffy was wounded by a UberVamp, during the battle in the Hellmouth. It must have been anticipating Buffy's decision to take the fight into the Hellmouth. But it didn't count on Buffy's empowerment of Spike - along with the W&H amulet to spoil its plans.

However, I bet that the First Evil had a whale of a time with the Angel Investigation Team, during Season 5 of ANGEL.

All knowing? Surely it would have known it's plan would fail or would have come up with a better one atleast. The first was more a taunter than anything.

Considering that it is the spirit of evil, I doubt that it was all knowing. It was only familiar with humanity's (and our characters') darker sides.

For me, he is literally all talk, lol...

He gave me *nothing* to work with in the fear department.

I mean, I know this sounds dorky, but I was actually scared of characters like Glory, and Angelus - not really scared, more...I was just aware how capable they was to destroy the Scoobs, and that kept me all anticipat-y, if that makes sense...

The First on the other hand...big ol' pile o' poo...
I personally think they shouldnt have had The First as the last big-bad, they should've just had the Uber-vamp, kinda goes back to basics too, which is always fun...

Im getting all off-topic now...
So yeah...

The First = Suckyness

I think that if you think about it, it is pretty creepy... He was trying to wipe out the entire Slayer line, and quite possibly could have succeeded. He had all the time in the world to act, as Giles said, and if he had been more patient, like, let them get their guard down, he could have easily destroyed them...
