The First Ubervamp and 'Showtime'

I am watching through buffy again for is about my 5th time and have just watched showtime from series 7. I know a lot of people loved this episode, I preffered the one before it.

What I dont like is that the ubervamp gave buffy a beating in the previous episode and then even at the start of the fight in this episode it was clearly winning the fight comfortably and then there is a sudden turn around and buffy wins.

What makes even less sense is that dispite having to run away from the ubervamp and been saved by daylight as well as been buried in rubble Buffy and her gang have the confidence that she can win a pre planned fight in full view of everyone watching, traditionally in buffy she does well by working with her gang using teamwork to take down major baddies but this was non other than a one on one fight which she wins against all odds with no reason given.

The only logical explanation I can think of is that the ubervamp was told by the first to not kill buffy so as such its hands were tied in the battle and it had to hold back a bit or maybe Willow did something and even the shield weakened it I dont know but to me the fact Buffy won this fight and had confidence to win it beforehand (only a day before was completely scared of it) was just one of the worst thought out stories.

The future ubervamps been weaker I can explain to myself easy enough since its arguable that the first one had the first merged with it, for me the big problem is this ubervamp's death.
 
The best theory I can come up with for you is that the Scoobies were desperate enough to force themseleves to *seem* to believe in the plan, to show the First, the potentials and themselves that they had a chance of winning.

Of course, it's not the first time Buffy has beat the odds, so maybe they didn't have to trick themselves into believing she could do it, they actually did believe it.
 
As for how Buffy managed to beat the ubervamp in "Showtime" after it pretty much wearing her out teice before, this could be attributed to her studying its fighting style and, as she told the Poitntials in the next episode, forcing it to fight on her terms, rather than fighting on its own. The first two times that Buffy fought the ubervamp, it was either a standup, toe to toe fight or she was injured and trying to get away. She learned that she couldn't match its strength, so she forced the third and final confrontation in an environment where her superior speed and agility were the deciding factors. Even at that, the match was uncomfortably close until almost the last moment.

The first time that they fought, Buffy underestimated the ubervamp, having no knowledge of it whatsoever. A stake to the heart didn't kill it, which surprised her.ought by surprise, she wasn't prepared for its much greater strength, the same way that she wasn't prepared for Glory in Season 5. The second time they fought, she was injured early in the fight,taking away her one advantage, her greater speed and agility. The third and final time that they fought, she didn't give it the chance to get really close long enough to injure her. Then, when she did finally make her final attack, it was from the rear and the ubervamp was on its knees. A classic example of brains over brawn.

I mostly agree. And as for why the original Uber Vamp was much stronger than the others, I think the original one was an Alpha Uber Vamp. Its purpose was to intimidate Buffy and outmatch Spike, obviously the First would have chosen its strongest.

Just look at the other vampires, the power-gap is HUGE! The Master, Kokistos, Angel(us), Drusilla, Spike, Prince of Lies and Darla are at least 5x more formidable than a standard vamp. Same with the original, it was an Alpha amongst its peers just like those guys are amongst theirs.

thanks guys, its opened my mind a bit as to how it happened.

when she first thought glory I felt the battle wasnt so one sided. This is why this battle seemed odd, but the explanation of choosing a place to suit her agility is something I can believe.
 
It was also good at times to feel that Buffy had a hard task ahead of her and that not every fight was going to be easy, this way it was a little more believable.

Exactly. I thought the same thing. Naturally, the toughest, or at least the bravest, would hang out by the seal waiting to put a boot up some @$$ at the first possible opportunity.
 
I liked when Buffy finally kicked that ubervamp's ass! I mean, why did it take so long? Buffy is already very strong, she has grown powerful through the years, so maybe that new kind of vampire took her by surpise but I still don't understand why it took so long. Not blaming Buffy here but the writers.

Anyway, I really liked that in the end she turned the fight into a show cause she showed the Potentials what real power is.
Is it gonna be always like that? Are the Potentials gonna defy her that much? Cause they really have no right to judge!
 
I figure the first Ubervamp was hard to kill because it was their ultimate fighting champion, they sent out their best first and the others weren't so good. I figure the gang are confident that Buffy can beat it because she's confident but then again she's their only option. Buffy beats it second time around because she has it's measure, she lures it to where she wants it and she plays to her strengths, using weapons, speed, agility and guile. It's one of Buffy's great features that she shows tactical strengths, learns from her mistakes, adapts, occasionally runs away to fight another day whereas Kendra and s3 Faith might fight senselessly to their deaths

And she's Buffy, after all. Dawn's sister, Hank and Joyce's little girl. She always win
