The Football (or soccer) Thread.

So I am fairly new to this forum, and I was surprised to see no mention of the beautiful game in the social studies forum. Where I'm from nearly everyone has an opinion on the footy, so I decided to see if it was the same here on BB 🙂 To kick this off discussion (pun intended 😀) I have written some insightful questions 😀

1. What club team do you support?
2. Why do you support them?
3. Are you on the terraces every week, or are you more of an armchair fan?
4. Favourite player of all time, and why?
5. Who will you be supporting in the World Cup in South Africa?

Those are all I can think of at the moment, so yeah, have fun 😀 I know some people can get pretty fired up about football (myself included) and most football debates in real life just end up with people hurling abuse as each other, so lets keep it friendly 🙂 Be proud of your team but don't diss other peoples.

Anyways, here are my answers:
1. Newcastle United.
2. Used to live in Newcastle, and if you live there you can't avoid the football fever. Best fans in Britain IMO.
3. I don't live in Newcastle anymore, so now I can only get to 2 or 3 games a year 🙁
4. Alan Shearer, the embodiment of Newcastle Utd Football Club. IMO, the best striker of his generation, and he's a former England captain.
5. ENGERLAND 😀

1: Celtic.
2: I'm from Celtic supporting family.
3: Only seen them few times in last 3yrs cos i was living in Ireland, now i'm back i plan on going alot more.
4: Henrik Larsson, one of Celtics biggest legends and just an all round phenomenon. He petty much changed the game for Barca in the 07 champs league final.
5: I dont really care cos Scotland aint there, hopefully one of the underdogs tho.

1. Dundee United
2. We have two local teams, Dundee FC & Dundee United. Everybody chooses one of them, the exact reason why I chose United will forever be lost in the mists of time.
3. I don't get to games much anymore, just too expensive.
4. Craig Brewster. He scored the winning goal in the '94 cup final against the 'Gers, the only time I've witnessed my team taste any success (they won the league in '82 but I wasn't born till the end of that year).
5. Spain. They have the most talented & technically gifted team of my generation, they're a joy to watch. Plus I've got a tenner on them 🙂

1. Manchester United.
2. I'm not really sure. I come from a United family, I can't remember a time when I didn't support them.
3. Well I'm from Ireland so it's too expensive to get to Old Trafford but if I had my way I'd be there every week.
4. Roy Keane. Best midfielder of his generation. At his best be controlled the entire pace of the game, his passing rate was second to none. He was an enforcer, other players were intimidated by him which is an invaluable thing to have. If he tackled you, you knew about it. He led United by example and there was that one time he beat Juventus on his own. 😀 😛
5. With Ireland being robbed of not qualifying I'm not really inclined to support anyone but if I was pushed I'd probably throw my hat in for Italy. Give Trap my support 😉

1. What club team do you support?

Hull City.

2. Why do you support them?

My dad has always supported them, he lived there til he was about 12. I followed Man U as a kid but a few years ago I decided to start supporting Hull properly. (Before we were promoted to the Premiership I might add!)

3. Are you on the terraces every week, or are you more of an armchair fan?

Well, I live at the other end of the country and it's like an 6-8 hour drive. My dad used to that drive a lot but not so much in the last couple of years. When we were in the Championship I saw a couple of away games that were closer to here. I did go the play off final at Wembley a couple of years ago. Easily one of the THE most amazing experiences of my life. It was just amazing.

4. Favourite player of all time, and why?

Don't really have one from Hull to be honest. Windass is a legend and right now I love what Bullard has done for the club. What he did at Man City this season was just legendary. In general though, probably Becks or Giggs.

5. Who will you be supporting in the World Cup in South Africa?

England all the way!

1. What club team do you support?

Manchester United

2. Why do you support them?

I'm not actually sure. My dad supports Leeds United, which should mean I should support them, right? But when I was younger, I wanted to be exactly like my much older cousin, and she supports United, so, yeah...lol

3. Are you on the terraces every week, or are you more of an armchair fan?

I live in Northern Ireland, so I don't really have the cash I'd need to be there every week. I have been to loads of games, though, and I was even at Alex Ferguson's testimonial match, which was just amazing.

4. Favourite player of all time, and why?

Ryan Giggs. He's been a solid player, all through his career. He's never put fame or publicity above his football, and I think some of the younger players could learn a lot by his example.

5. Who will you be supporting in the World Cup in South Africa?

Well, since Northern Ireland suck and didn't make it, and neither did Scotland, my fall back is England, so that's who I'll be supporting.

1. What team do you support? Manchester United

2. Why do you support them? My brother bought me a kit when i was little and i basicially followed him.

3. Are you on the terraces every week or more an armchair fan? Unfortunately in the main i'am an armchair fan. I did go and see us last year in the FA Cup Semi Final where we lost to Everton on penalties, so wasn't a great experience.

4. Favourite player of all time and why: Has to be Eric Cantona. He was a genius and i thought he was brillant. Main reason why we won so many titles.

5. Who will you be supporting in the World Cup in South Africa? England, hopefully Rooney leads us to glory :smile3:

1. What club team do you support?

Manchester United and Dundee

2. Why do you support them?

Man U ~ When I was 4 I was at my best friend's house and they were all BIG man U fans, there was big match on! They asked me what team I supported, I didn't have one! So they threw a scarf at me and said I was a Man U fan XD
Dundee~ My dad was from Dundee, so we spent a lot of time there, went to a lot of matches and just fell in love with the club.

3. Are you on the terraces every week, or are you more of an armchair fan?

Somewhere in between, I don't go every week but I do try to go as much as possible!
It's way more enjoyable than watching it on the tv 🙂

4. Favourite player of all time, and why?

That's a horrible question! haha, I honestly don't have a single favourite. It changes as their careers go on.
Not one for nostalgia, sure some players were amazing back when, but I won't say they're my favourite if they're past their best.

5. Who will you be supporting in the World Cup in South Africa?
Portugal!
I'll give you the reason! 😉
For a long time in when I was younger Deco was my absolute favourite player! Had a wee crush on him XD
As this is his last international duty, I'd love it for him to go out on a high! 😀

2. Why do you support them? I'm not really sure, they rest of my family are Hammers fans so I don't know what made me support Arsenal.
3. Are you on the terraces every week, or are you more of an armchair fan? I went and saw them play once, it was against Middlesbrough. We lost.
4. Favourite player of all time, and why? Don't have a favourite, I was most into football when we still had Henry, Viera, Ljungberg, Seaman etc, so maybe an Arsenal player from around 2000 - 2003.
5. Who will you be supporting in the World Cup in South Africa? England!!!!!! 😀

1. What club team do you support?

Celtic FC.

2. Why do you support them?

I have Catholic Glaswegian family. It's not like I ever had a choice!

3. Are you on the terraces every week, or are you more of an armchair fan?

God no. I am a fan of armchairs, however.

4. Favourite player of all time, and why?

Er...*mmmblllmmmbllmmm* Yeah. Him. The...one that scores all the goals.

5. Who will you be supporting in the World Cup in South Africa?

The channels that aren't showing the football.

1. Eeeeh, in which country? 😀 My number one team is Liverpool. Which is such a joy at the moment. Remember that it's more fun to kick up than down. 😉

2. Those I choose at an early age was simply that they attracted me by their style of play when I watched them on tv. I'm old. One game per week was the standard. Later on it's been because of certain players and what team they played in at the moment. Hence Real Madrid and not Barcelona even if older brother Laudrup actually played longer for Barcelona. But those teams I support less.

3. Definitely armchair. Seen a few games in Sweden but rarely the right teams. Not a fan of traveling on my own and had few friends with the right interest and they supported the wrong teams.

4. Marco van Basten. Boyhood idol. Why? Did you see him play? Others worth mentioning are the Laudrup brothers. At Liverpool it's Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman (not a popular choice) and Steven Gerrard. If Torres stays he'll be a given. And Reina sure can become one.

5. Haven't decided yet since we didn't make it. Man we sucked and didn't deserve it. Back on track. There's a lot of teams I wouldn't mind winning. Which one I really want to win I won't know until it's started. Guess the team that will impress me most with their play.

As a swede I should say Ljungberg but for me it's easy from that time in Arsenal. Bergkamp.

2. Why do you support them? I honestly can't remember why i started to support them, i think i liked their jerseys at the time....
3. Are you on the terraces every week, or are you more of an armchair fan? Seeing as they play in Portugal i'm more of a uncomfy desk chair guy (trying to watch a crappy stream at 4 in the morning)
4. Favourite player of all time, and why? Darijo Srna, gives his all for Croatia and is just the perfect player IMO.
5. Who will you be supporting in the World Cup in South Africa? Australia, will also be hoping that Portugal do good.

He's definately a good young talent, really coming into his own this season. He's learnt to use his height and strength to beat defenders, and I think he'll do OK in the premiership if we get promoted.
Although the other day he did have a fight on the training ground with Steve Taylor, but as long as he's scoring goals and the Toon are winning I don't really mind.

Yeah, exactly right. TONY mobray is sooooo out his depth its unreal. Like, celtic losing 4-0 to st mirren is like man u losing 4-0 to wigan. Unacceptable.
