I assume you are talking about my man Rio Ferdinand... as a passionate England fan I'm not too dissapointed. I think Stevie G will do as good a job as captain, he is captain for Liverpool so it's not like he doesn't know what he's doing. I think Ferdinand is a bit overrated as a defender, and Michael Dawson is a promising young player.
Emile Heskey's not done himself any favours, he's wasn't very popular with fans before he injured the captain. I myself have always had a soft spot for him, and I am hoping he will play well in the world cup and improve his reputation.
 
At least we haven't lost Terry, he's the real lynchpin of defence. And Gerrard's a great captain, I would've chosen him above Terry in the first place. But this will hurt our chances I think.

I think Heskey will always be the maligned man of England. He's only good for his effect on other players, he's not going to be a common goalscorer and so that makes it so much harder for him to win over the fans.

If I were Capello or Ancellotti, Lampard would be my captain for club & country. He is a charming, personable & articulate man who always conducts himself with grace & class. He is everything a captain should be, the only time he's ever in the papers is for what he does on the pitch not what he does off it.

lol, I don't really have much against Lampard but none of the words above would ever be my choices to describe him. Articulate? The guy can't speak properly! He's worse than Becks used to be.

I'm indifferent to him because I think he's a bit bland and not enough of a 'character' to lead, in my opinion. So I don't have much against him but he wouldn't be a choice for captain for me.

There was a good interview with ol' "Lump of lard" in The Times magazine supplement this weekend where he does come over as intelligent, thoughtful and most non-footballer-like 🙂

Considering he grew up steeped in football culture, Frank Lampard is a long way from what some people think of as the typical footballer. He went to private school. He reads The Times. He has an IQ in the 150s. He lives in a townhouse in Central London. He has an interest in politics. He is learning Spanish, taking his tapes to the World Cup to study in his downtime. He hasn't got an earring nor, I think, any tattoos. He doesn't play computer games and neither "“ this really is unusual "“ does he play golf. I've never interviewed a footballer who doesn't play golf.

Although I don't have the usual West Ham fan's dislike for Frank (he left United after his uncle and father - Harry Redknapp & Frank snr.- were sacked and diehard Hammers fans thought him a traitor) and rate him as a Premier League player for Chelsea, I don't think he has ever come up with the goods for England in a big game like the World Cup or the Euro Championship. I hope he does this year though 🙂
 
The role of England captain is overrated anyway. They don't actually do much as there are many natural leaders in any given England team.

Ooh you need to read the section on West Ham in his autobiography 😉

And whether there are leaders on the team or not, you need one guy who is going to keep the others in line on the pitch and fill that role of intermediary with the referee. And not be like Becks was, getting his nails done instead of doing his job during the match.

Anyone who watched England vs Greece in the World Cup Qualifying match for the 2002 World Cup would know that Becks gave his heart and soul for England. He ran all over the pitch and single handedly propelled us to the finals netting a free kick in the dying minutes.

I don't think you can question David Beckham's work ethic or passion for England but that's just my opinion.

I agree with the bit about Beckham, I think highlighting Gerrard for the diving thing is a bit tight tho, all players dive at some point. Remember Rooney against Arsenal a few years back?

I totally agree with you on that one (again it should be noted, I'm Scottish). Beckham was a model professional & I always felt that a lot of the circus that surrounded him really got on his nerves. He's a simple guy who just loves to play football & when he is on the pitch there is no-one who gives more for the cause. Just look at the situation at Madrid, when Capello became the Madrid manager Beckham was dropped & shunned, but he got his head down, worked hard & by the end of the season was arguably Madrid's player of the season. So much so that when Capello became England manager he continued to involve Beckham in the squads despite him playing in a clearly inferior league. Even now, he's injured & Capello still wanted him with the squad because he knows that Beckham is an excellent influence on any team.

So, who's enjoying the World Cup? The opening match was excellent, both teams played with imagination and style. The first goal was top class. Unfortunately, the second game is really quite dull so far. 🙁

The first game was really good, and I'm sorta glad South Africa didn't lose.

The second game...I really spaced out during most of it. The most exciting part was when that guy from Uruguay got a red card. I watched both games in a sports bar, and while during the first game people were really cheering and stuff, experiencing emotions, during the second one the bar felt like being in class.
 
1st match was enjoyable. South African goal was brillant. The second game was dreadfully boring. Hopefully that's the worst game we'll see in the whole tournament, i can't see another game being that dull and uninspiring. Both teams didn't have the drive and hunger needed to win the game.

Two draws means Group A is very tight which is good to see. Will make for some interesting matches in the next round of games.
 
As for today's games: Argentina won, but by all rights should have won by more than 1-0. Nigeria's goalkeeper was on FIRE.

US/England is going as well as thought....and Robert Green will NEVER hear the end of it next season in the EPL after mishandling that Clint Dempsey shot on net late in the first half...
 
I can't believe England and the US finished with a draw. That goal the US scored was just so painful.

I watched this game in an Irish Pub, and you'd assume British people would be there, but they were te minority...so many Americans! I didn't even know we had that many til tonight. And all the Germans except me were supporting the US, I'm assuming they'd rather see Germany against the US in a later game than England, cos our chances against the US are just better. But still, all those people shouting 'USA' all the time was pretty brutal.
 
I agree, that second goal was painful to watch, even worse because they kept replaying it and making us watch it again 🙁
Hopefully England will have a different keeper for the next match.
