The Gift as the Series Finale?

As a Spuffy shipper of many years, I need to contradict this and everyone elses "OMG teh SPUFFY!" comments.

Frankly, I would have loved The Gift to be our finale. I would rather have it end (or have a spin-off...) after season five than deal with the emotional cacophony and turmoil that was season six. It was a season that made me feel badly for characters I disliked, not because of their situations but because they were in it. Season seven was immensely improved (Giles on a horse, Dawn learning to cope with things, Selfless...) but if it meant not having season six and Noxon's Reign of Terror, I would gladly give up season seven.

Characters who had important stories like Spike and Willow could have easily crossed over. Characters who didn't have any more significant stories to tell could do a couple "guest starring" episodes, Xander and Anya could have adopted Dawn and lived like a functional family, and wrap things up on Angel. Angel could have gone back to Sunnydale and closed the Hellmouth or if they did the "Faith" spin-off they wanted she could deal with it.

I understand the idea that it doesn't feel right to wrap up BtVS on "Angel", but with some good writing I see no reason why it couldn't have worked. I would much rather have Buffy end on an amazing season like 5, than have the support characters like Xander, Giles, and Dawn become so incredibly boring like they did in Seasons 6 and 7. Not to mention that Season 7 is just awful.
 
I think Angel's series finale NFA away was amazing, and I'm glad the gift wassnt the finale, that would haver sucked.yes, some characters were turned darker, but Joss meant for that. It was a period after high school where they lost themselves, but the show was about dealing with that. The onyl reason Giles was moved out of the show is because Anthony Head had to leave, and the gift was the last episode on the WB, before Buffy moved networks. Overall, for me AtS's Not Fade Away was one of the greatest episodes of television and I'm glad The Gift wasnt the finale

I am so with you on that, the Fang Gang had other stuff of their own to wrap up, they didn'y need to cheaply write in half the cast of BtVS
 
Except for nothing got wrapped up in ANGEL at all. Hell, maybe having more characters to work with could've given the writers some focus, instead of being subjected to THE MESS that is s3-5, where it basically felt like they just shook a magic eight ball of storylines and then tried to play pin the tail on the plot hole that eventually came with said storyline.
 
I think the Gift would have been a great end to the show, it gave closer to the Slayer's story and was left open enough for spin offs to happen. I wouldn't haven't liked any of the characters going over to Angel (I didn't like that Spike had to go over in season 5), but Willow could of had her on show or Spike, with him taking care of Dawn on it.
 
I don't really like the idea of a bunch of spin offs, it would have been too much you know? There was already AtS, I think making ANOTHER Buffy spin off would have been too much.
 
I think "The Gift" would have made a great series finale, but I'm still glad we got two more seasons... I want as much BtVS as I can get! 😀
 
I love "The Gift", don't get me wrong, but I would feel guilty if I didn't say I prefered "Chosen". She once again defied tradition, and the biggest burden of her life has been lifted off her shoulders. Plus, I'm just a sucker for that smile.
 
From what I understand, Originally The Gift was meant to be the series finale. Joss had decided that season 5 would be the last season. He decided to keep the show going after much deliberation. This is one of the reasons why Buffy switched networks. I specifically remember reading about this on the web somewhere.

As far as my personal feelings go I loved certain episodes in seasons 6 & 7. The only trouble I have with those two particular seasons is that every other season of BTVS has amazing episodes. I love every episode of seasons 1-5. I might get rocks thrown at me for this but I think one of the things I dislike about season 6 is The Trio. Honestly, I don't understand how those characters have anything to do with Buffy as a character or as a show. Aside from making minor appearances in other episodes the members of The Trio never made any real contributions (aside from Jonathan's cameo's and his one episode and Warren's one episode). I think the season should have revolved more around Buffy's return, Xander and Anya's wedding, Dawn's clepto issue, and Giles and Buffy's relationship. There's just SO much they didn't put in Season 6 that they should have.
 
Warren killed Tara, causing Willow to go nuts and become Dark Willow. That's pretty big.

And she ruined the lives of thousands of innocent girls in the process. Yippee for Buffy!

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that I love "Chosen". I love the intention behind it. It was all one big metaphor. I'm not worried about thousand of innocent girls' lives being ruined because it really didn't happen. I'll take Buffy actually being happy over her killing herself any day. Sue me.

But that didn't REALLY happen either.
 
I'm glad that it wasn't because I love Buffy and I would have been devastated. It would have felt like a cop-out to be honest. It would have left a lot of things unanswered. I would have accepted it as the ending but...I'm glad that it wasn't.
 
I don't think it would have been enough Buffy for me to end at "The Gift"! No, it definitely wouldn't have been. This episode is amazing, but I really enjoyed how Buffy&Gang progressed in the next two seasons. Also, Spike is my favorite character so the return of his soul is too epic! Oh, and there were too many sketchy character story lines that needed to be completed and played out (e.g. Willow).

And all of that could've been done on ANGEL. And it would've spared us all from the whole Connor, posessed Cordelia, Jasmine fiasco.

Except the transition would have taken much more screen time away from actual character development. This would have happened because there were actual fans of Angel that never even watched Buffy, and the random introduction of all these characters would have needed to be explained.

There are many things to criticize about Season 7, while Season 5 was almost perfect. Yet Season 6 has so many great episodes, and so does Season 7. I can't imagine a world without them.

Seasons six and seven has a lot of moments I am very fond of. And I remember being very that season five wasn't the end, after all. Still, with hindsight, I think I wish it was. The loveliness of the seasons nearly make up for the weaker parts to me, but only nearly.

I don't think seasons 3-5 of Angel was a mess, the writers just put the fang gang throguh some pretty tough stuff and heartbreak, but I found them entertaining and everything I would want. Throwing in soem of the characters would ruin the show

Very good point I agree entirely, I for one loved Buffy and Angel but i thought AtS was ebtter
