This is something which has always puzzled me...

But, when Buffy finally gets to Dawn and realises that her blood is the same as Dawn's and she therefore sacrifices herself, wouldn't the portal still be open as Dawn blood is still running? Wouldn't she still of needed to be dead? ::huh1::

I'm sorry this this has been asked before or if there is a simple explanation.

Thanks.

BTW...welcome to the boards!
Earlier in the season, Buffy makes a connection between her and Dawn. She tells Dawn that the blood that runs through her viens is Summers Blood, just like hers. In the Magic Box, before they went to the tower, Buffy tells Giles that the monks made Dawn out of her. They have the same blood. So if one of them died, the portal would close, regardless of which one it was.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I guess it does makes sense, with them practically being the same person. But to be honest, I found the whole Dawn is Buffy thing kind of confusing.

Thanks, again. 🙂

FYI...off topic...but I love your banner!!
You'd think if Dawn was made out of Buffy she'd look a little bit more like her, hey? 😉

The blood needed to stop inside the portal, I'm not sure if Dawn could just kill herself somewhere else and the portal would know about it, the blood needed to start and stop at that particular point. And the reason Buffy's blood worked was because at that time the portal was looking for Summers blood, not the key itself.

At first it was looking for 'the key' and when Dawns blood opened the portal it registered that as 'the key' so from that point on it was looking for Summers blood, which is why Buffy could close it but not open it, it still needed to be Dawn that started the process.

Arron, as Lyri stated Buffy closed the portal, but as you pointed out Dawn's blood kept dripping.

Imagine if the portal could think? what would it be?
"The blood dripped on me so I opened, then I felt the last of her blood so I closed, then more of her blood dripped on me, huh?"

Answer Buffy or Dawn must have put vaseline on the cuts to stop the blood,
or
Dawn stood to far back and her blood dribbled down the tower.
