"The Girl In Question" Revisited

Given the fact that Andrew almost certainly reported Spike's return to Giles as soon as he returned to Watcher Headquarters, does it seem likely that the whole plan about a Buffy double having an affair with the Immortal in Rome was just a ploy to keep the knowledge that Spike had returned, as well as keeping both Spike and Angel from ever getting in contact with the real Buffy, who was, at that time, actually out in the boondocks in Scotland with her new Slayer army? The story about the double being there to protect Buffy from her enemies always seemed more than a little bit lame.

Im pretty sure that the whole Buffy doubles idea hadnt even been consid3ered at the time that the Angel episode was filmed. I could be wrong though, I dont know how far in advanced Joss had his stories planned out.

I don't think so. It always felt like Joss wrote the idea of a "Buffy double" because she acts so out of character in that episode. They expanded on it quite a bit in S8 that there are imposter-Buffys situated around the world. They had that whole issue about the girl who nobody knew her real name and thought she was Buffy.

I have no doubt that Giles knew Spike was alive after "Damage", but I don't think he would have told Buffy. He makes it pretty clear in "Hole in the World" that he's not interested in helping Angel and Spike at all.

I think overall though that "The Girl in Question" was just kind of an excuse for Joss to write an Angel/Spike bromance/buddy cop style episode. I know a lot of people despise it, but I've always liked it. I laugh hard every time I see it (best line, when Angel's in Italy, can't talk to anyone and is just pissed: "Don't you have like an Italian Wesley or something?")

You think that someone with a past like Giles would be a little more understanding about someone finding themselves in a slightly compromising situation.
