The Great Tragedy of the Buffy HD Remaster

Hello there! The remaster wasn't finished when we did What's Wrong With Buffy's HD? and we felt it warranted a final word. Also...the remaster still EXISTS so...the battle goes on.

Honestly, I know there are some issues with the HD remaster (although I really don't think they're so bad as to call them a tragedy) but I love having BtVS in HD. One thing which always bugged me about BtVS was how dark and dank the colouring often was and, as someone who does a lot of GIFing and vidding and who makes a lot of banners, I absolutely love having higher quality episodes to work with. I know I'm in the minority here, but I have almost no problem with the BtVS remaster and I'm waiting for the day that they remaster AtS.

Just started a rewatch and my girlfriend wanted to watch on Amazon. One look at the dodgy cropping and bright lights in the darkness and I went to get my dvds. Fingers crossed someone eventually does it properly because it would be amazing.

I only watch the originals, but I feel you. The fandom may die out unless we get a decent remaster. The poor quality does not help the muddy brown tone of episodes like "Innocence." The issue is less dire with the later season, mostly because the picture quality is better, but also because S4-7 is much brighter and colourful.

Bottom line: Neither the remaster nor the original is good enough.

Great video! The HD-version is only useful for edits where I can my add own colorings and filters. I'm glad I have the dvd's! I really hope we'll get a good remaster someday and a bluray release. 👏

It's really sad that shows like Twin Peaks look absolutely beautiful in HD while retaining the 4:3 aspect ratio, but Buffy can't even get a decent HD remaster. Why can't people deal with the fact that some shows are meant to be in 4:3? It's not just Buffy that suffers from this, even shows like Seinfeld have bad HD remasters. There's a video out there somewhere that demonstrates this.

DVD is going to die. 480p SD will not be enough anymore. They have disappointed nearly everyone, even the crew behind the show. Think of how beautiful a proper remaster with the correct aspect ratio and COLOR GRADING and ESPECIALLY THE SPECIAL EFFECTS of BtVS would be.

The only thing they got right was to fix the 4% speed difference, so now it plays on the original speed as it did back in the day on The WB/UPN.

I bought the dvd box sets and ripped them onto my MacBook instead of buying them on iTunes like I do with most things. I just like the old SD version better. Nastaglia plays a part and the HD episodes on Sci Fi have the weirdest colour scales.
