The Grudge: Member Review Thread (Will Contain Spoilers)

Not that I mind the spoilers, and it's good to know that you all found it scary, but could we have some more ratings from you lucky buggers who have seen it? I'll probably go and see it anyway when it comes out Nov 18 here in Oz coz I loved The Ring and SMG is in it.

Is it better/worse/as good as The Ring? If I were to go with a couple of mates who are 30ish and not Buffy fans at all, are they going to enjoy it? Or are they going to pummel me into the ground and ridicule me for dragging them to a "faggy" movie with Buffy in it? (Yes even 30 y.o males are capable of this level of immaturity)

It's currently getting a rather rotten 38% on Rotten Tomatoes by the way...
 
Hmm. Review? Ok.

3/10 stars, way worse than The Ring. I liked The Ring.
In short:

Bad special effects, pathetic plot, boring repititive events, blah ending, not too great of acting from most of the cast, poorly written script, too long.....I think I'm being generous with my three stars.

But hey, that's just me.

Ahh I'm going to see this movie on Saturday as part of a friend's birthday celebration and not too thrilled about it..... I really want to see it, but lordy I doubt I'll get to sleep Saturday night 😱..... 🙂
 
As I said earlier...actually...i don't remember what i posted on the "star rating" thing lol....i think i said 9 or 10....but anyway I thought it was as good as the ring. The Ring had better special effects and all, but I liked this movie a little better, and not because SMG was in it, although that did have a slight affect on my rating also. 😉

But overall I really enjoyed the movie, I don't see why some of them wouldn't like it. And plus on TV here one of the commercials for it is calling it the "#1 movie in America" and all that....so it's good 😀

At Yahoo's reviews, the movie has pretty decent ratings. Last I checked,'B' was the average grade, which is very good.
 
You can't compare The Ring with The Grudge. They are not even remotely the same. The Ring was a Hollywood remake of the Japanese Ringu. The Grudge is an English-language remake of the Japanese Ju-On. Meaning that it has the same setting, same feel, and even the same director. The Ring screenplay was re-written more 'Hollywood' and they set it in the US, and you can see these differences immensely.

I loved The Grudge. You have to go in expecting to see a Japanese-style horror movie. The Ring completely lost the feel Ringu had.

I liked The Ring, I'm just saying that you can't compare those two movies, not by a long shot.
 
Alright, here's what I got...

Haven't seen it yet. Not sure I really want to, because I watch the previews and it freaks me out. I play the game on the site, and it freaks me out. I really want to go to sleep the night I see it. But, thanks to my friends, I am sufficently spoiled.

Spoiler alert. Major. You know how that goes.

So, the deal is, that the dad kills the wife and the kid for being obsessed with Bill Pullman, right? And they become The Grudge. And the whole cat thing...from what I heard from my friend, he said that the cat was never used to beat the kid, but the kid and the cat were like, best friends or whatever, and he killed the cat and the kid and the cat meshed together because they were so close and that's why he meows. He only talks once in the movie. I just wanna make sure I got my facts straight before I see it. If I ever.

I know this thread is about spoilers, but those were major. Try plot of the movie. Don't neseecarily wanna ruin it for people who haven't seen it.
 
I thought that one scene had the
husband throw the cat at the wife, and then later he drowns the cat and the kid

Yeah I do think that other than being remakes of Japanese films, the Ring and the Grudge are two different kinds of films.

I think the scariest bit for me was when the girl comes out of the shadow in the hallway at the office building and starts walking towards the security camera.
 
lol....the noise...scariest part of the whole darn movie...funny to freak people out with it though right after they see the movie...not that I would do such a thing....really...::trying to look innocent::...freaked me out for a few days...I'm not good with scary movies...but it was so worth watching...
 
oh yea sure you didnt do that Alyssa! Well, i shouldn't be talking lol because that night when we all just slept over, me and Caitlin (sp? lol) and Brittany were doing that in the morning....lol 😀
 
You guys don't have to worry about Spoiler tags in this thread, there's a very clear spoiler warning in the thread title and this thread is for discussion by members who've already seen it (or those who don't care about getting spoiled). 😀

So yes the father hit or beat his wife with the cat at one point. Also, the boy and the cat were murdered in the same way I believe, by the father drowning them in the tub.
 
I'm having a discussion with a bunch of people over at the EvBoard about this same topic. And here's what I glommed from them:

Toshio and the cat actually weren't killed in the same way Kayako was. Takeo drowned the mom, and locked Toshio and the cat in the closet. So when Karen finds the boy taped to the closet, that would be why. He starved to death. Also, it's implied that Toshio was beaten by Takeo, because when we see him he's all bandaged up and he always looks sullen.

Up for speculation, of course. It makes the most sense to me, but let's remind ourselves that I haven't seen the movie yet.
 
But didnt we see the father drowning the cat? atleast thats what I remember. I dont really remember him putting his son in a closet but I dont remember everything so well anymore since its been awhile.

So glad I was spaced that night, can't remember that!

I'm not sure about the whole cat thing and how they died, maybe its because I kept looking away. Definatly going to have to watch it again and try to piece it together.
 
The cat was definitely drowned. I remember because it happened SO fast..and I always look away at animal parts..but I didn't even have time..the dad had him by the scruff and dunked him in the tub, holding him under.
 
This film sounds so twisted.

So the Cat and Boy thing is basically where this whole thing started?

Jenny: I haven't seen this film and am not sure if I want to, as I hate scary movies. The annoying this is though I can read about them and get hooked but not see it.

I saw this on MSN, its links for an interview with SMG about The Grudge and they have a text version as well.

Im a bit misty about the original but the character of Karen (well the original name, was Japanese and had a diff name) was in the house like when Jason Behr went in (who btw wasn't in the original, she had no boyfriend) and she confronted the evil lady by putting her fingers over her eyes (like the cover of the DVD: http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0002VF4QC.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg) and I think that scared her off or something. May rewatch later to "spot the difference". Another I can think of, there wasn't the professor storyline.

I liked it, im a big fan of Japan so it was so great seeing it in a different way. Most films that are in Tokyo focus on the big city, not the small backstreets. And SMG speaking Japanese 😀 oh and showering 😀 and getting all naughy with her boyfriend at the start 😀

I didn't jump too much, the start bit with Yoko in the attic. Knew what was going to happen for most of it though as I'd seen the original. My friend jumped when the guy (think he was called Alex) slipped which is funny. Same person, on the way home on the train, looked out the window (as it was dark he saw his reflection) and someone pointed out it was like on the bus. He was aprehensive of looking out the window after.

I thought the cat was just thrown into the bath, it was a quick shot anyway so can't remember. Dunno why the boy makes that sound, maybe the same reason he (seemingly) doesn't have genetalia.

When Karen was investigating the murder (btw the articles she looked at were from Nov 11th and we saw the film on Nov 12th) anyone else think the scene on the roof was her being Buffy-esq? When she was running to the house my friend said "Shes running like a spack" and I told him about the infamous "You're running too much like a superhero" story.

My friends were disappointed with the ending, I think because it wasn't a typical hollywood ending. We dont know if Karen died, or if she overcome the evil lady (guessing by the rumours about a sequel, neither) or what. The amibiguity (sp?) is what I like. As is the narrative structure, it gets slow at times and plays with time.

Now for the DVD to be released...
 
Sarah Michelle gellar was awesome. Just seeing her in the movie was great. It was a weird movie. I actually wasn't scared but it had left me with an eerie feeling. Personally, I felt that the audience was so cheated on the whole shower scene. Oh, and remember that article where Sarah said she had trouble running like a victim opposed to a superhero...I could tell. She was trying to be like fragile I guess but there were definetly some Buffy gestures. I liked how the had ended it but I kind of was like what that's it! Overall Cool movie.

that's so true! i thought that the hair part in the shower was gonna be freakier. but it was two seconds long.
Yeah forgot to mention. One of my favourite things about the movie was the sense that even in our own homes we are not safe. And that was clear with the bed scene, loved it.
