Alright, so I had decided to begin re-watching the series from the very beginning, and I was on episode two ("The Harvest") and I couldn't help but have this question pass my mind. In the scene where The Master is appointing Luke, The Master says "My soul is your soul". Vampires don't have souls, so how was this possible?

In the first episode, I really don't think all of the background story was decided. Certainly the fact that Angel would be a vampire hadn't been worked out, and probably the whole soul thing was brought in at that point just to make him unique from all of the other vampires.

He may have been saying "my soul is your soul" meaning that the lack there of was the same...that Luke was in fact as souless as him. a play on words...when a human would say something like that like to a kindrid spirit type thing... my soul is your soul inplies that they are two souls connected...the vampire way I guess, is that their lack of (a soul) are their evil hearts connected rather. just a thought...

That probally didnt make a bit of sense, I just dont like to think that there are ever any flaws in the show, though I know their are lol.
 
Lol, I feel the same way, that's why I wanted some clarification on this. And no, it made perfect sense to me.
 
well thats good. I tried my hardest to come up with something plausable LOL

When the show started they didn't know that Angel was going to be a vampire? I figured that was always supposed to be a big plot point.

Well actually Angel was supposed to be a one time character.

As for the soul thing? Well the meaning of the soul is vague in the Buffyverse anyway, but if I were to legitimize it, it's symbolic.
 
hmmm good point perhaps the souls he was to take. but yeah at the start of a tv show not everything is worked out.. i mean later when you see the master coming to change darla he is some religious dude then too... right? lol
 
lol i just rewatched the episode and noticed this too lol... I think it was to do with the writers not having yet decided everything.. for example - vampire mythology... Lol it's the same in the episode 'Angel', where Buffy's "Come on" constitutes an invite into her home... I look back at the vamps from S1 and laugh, lol, they have like pointy nails and all hahaha

I've never noticed that before, but I think Vicariously's explanation fits the best. The Master was linking himself with Luke, so that when Luke drank so did the Master, so I think the comment is just to redifine how much alike they are.

Yeah, and did you notice that after she invites Angel in the Three still manage to get their hands through the door, where in later episodes, without an invite they just bounce off an invisible wall!
