Does anyoene else remember when Buffy jumped into it after one of the thee apocolyptic demons? It was like some huge hole which went deeper and deeper.

It might have something to do with the seal, but how come in s7 stairs appeared lol?

I look at the hellmouth as being more of a movable portal than a door to a specific place. Whilst it has a fixed location in our reality, that being under Sunnydale High, where it opens to could be any number of demonic realms or dimensions, depending on the intent of the person attempting to open it.
