Ok so Buffy was the Hellmouth's Last Guardian...but who was it's guardian before her? India was based out of Japan and we know that Nikki Wood was a NY Slayer, Kendra was basically based in Jamaica and Xin Rohng (sp?) was in China..not to mention the countless other slayers we know about that weren't from Sunnydale.
Also, what was Sunnydale like before Buffy came around and/or at times when there was no active slayer living there?
You're right, my post was just.. well not too thought through or serious.
But, the problem with this is that in The Wish it's quite obvious that Sunnydale would change a lot if Buffy wasn't there. Which pretty much means it can't have been that bad before.. Cause many people survived and lived normal lives before Buffy came to Sunnydale, but in the The Wish alternate reality, no-one had a normal life and vampires were ruling Sunnydale more or less. Which kinda means that things must have got a lot worse (evil wise) about the time Buffy moved to Sunnydale.
Well to me The Wish just infers that things went from Bad to Way Worse...the Master most likely would have risen from the Harvest and thus more problems would have ensued thereafter. There was obviously demonic activity about before Buffy got there as the Johnathan quote would indicate.
Agree, Sunnydale wasn't the best place to live before either, but it really did get Way Worse. Which means maybe the hellmouth in Sunnydale became more "active" (or whatever I'm supposed to call it) when Buffy moved there, which could mean that the Hellmouth didn't really need a guardian before..?
(I'm tired and it's getting late so excuse my words if I'm bad at explaining my thought, lol.)
The Powers that Be and or destiny plays a huge part in the slayer's life.
The slayer is chosen out of hundreds, maybe thousands of capable girls at the time. But the one who is chosen is the girl who has the most potential -- she would be the strongest, fastest, most agile, the best fighter and et cetera. Her current location may play a role in this, but most likely it would not.
Then usually the Council or destiny moves the slayer to wherever she was needed.
For instance, Buffy was called in L.A. and from Angel, we know that there is a lot of demonic activity in L.A.
So Buffy fights off a huge sum of baddies in L.A. (remember she dusted a lot of them in that gym fire) and suddenly fate called her to Sunnydale.
This is where it gets tricky.
If the Council had asked Buffy to move to the Hellmouth, Buffy would probably have said no. So what do the Powers that Be do? They intervene. They split Joyce and Hank up and they kick Buffy out of school. Then they make sure no school except Sunnydale High will except here.
And I think we also learned from Skip that the characters in the Buffyverse are nothing but pawns in the Powers that Be's game against evil. So it would not be out of character for them to do this in the fight against evil.
Certain slayers in time used to travel to different locations, I think this is mentioned in the promo like right before the premiere of Buffy on March 10 1997.
But since Sunnydale is a hot hellmouth, I'm guessing Buffy remained there for a reason. Which is also why I think the Powers that Be gave her a great SAT score.
As for Buffy being the last guardian of the hellmouth, I think they only were refering to Sunnydale. Of course there are other hellmouths around the world.
Spoiler Time:
In the comic book known as Fray, we see flashes of a slayer wielding the scythe and she very much looks like Buffy even though we only see a darkened shadow like image. And then we see a huge group of demons and then finally a picture of an octupus like demon hand grabbing what we think to be the slayer's hand into a portal.
And as you know in Fray, all demons and magicks are banished from this dimension from that battle.
So think about it:
From what we here at Buffy-Boards have reasoned is that Buffy, not Faith, is the TRUE slayer, who guards the hellmouth, the power flows through her, she was destined to find the scythe and she holds the line.
And the scythe activated slayers do not count as real slayers.
So here is to thinking that Buffy fought this huge battle with other mystical allies and she did banish them from this dimension, but somehow she got pulled into whereever they sent the demons and the magicks.
It could be that the Hellmouth was somewhat dormant, and the impending convergence of phenomena that would allow the Master to escape "kicked it up a notch" in Hellmouthy activity. The Master acting as a "plug" for 100 yrs may have prevented the need for an actual guardian for that length of time.

But Sunnydale has many other problems unrelated to the Master or even vampires.
Or did the demon activity increase when Buffy showed up? Because I can imagine things like evil praying mantis teachers who seduce students, students diging up bodies to create the ultimate girl, werewolves and et cetera happened probably even before Buffy's time.
Maybe these were also what signaled Buffy to the Hellmouth.
Hm, it would be interesting to know when the last slayer (pre-Buffy) was actually in Sunnydale. Because Cordelia and I were discussing conflicting statements:
The Master tells his army of vampires that it has been too long since they faced a slayer. And in WTTH and The Harvest, Buffy had been the slayer for almost a year. So it is not believable to say that the last slayer was stationed in Sunnydale a year ago and the vampires considering a year ago a long time. Because hey, they are friggin immortal.
Then you have the Master saying that Buffy is prettier then the last slayer. But this could mean the last slayer he faced, not the slayer that activated Buffy. But then Whistler tells Angel in Becoming the same thing - Buffy is prettier than the last slayer. So it really looks like they're talking about the same person. Unless before Buffy, Faith and Kendra all the slayers were f'ugly...
I'm pretty sure a "somewhat dormant" Hellmouth would still attract the kind of stuff you are talking about! I'm not sure, but didn't the California quakes of the early 1900's trap the Master? He'd been there for at least 60 yrs, so he couldn't have faced a Slayer recently. It could be that the activity increased when Buffy showed up, but that may be the reason why she was sent there in the first place...there, a bit of circular logic for ya!!😉
It's kind of logical to think that with such a strong force of good now situated in Sunnydale (the slayer) that the baddies wouldn't be so attracted to the area as their chances of being defeated have greatly increased since before Buffy came and after the slayer who was there before her left.
I agree with KD on this one. Maybe the hellmouth is like a volcano. It's always there but its only active some of the time.
Evil was always in Sunnydale, even before the slayer was there. And like Slayer, The said, The Powers That Be play a big part in making sure Buffy arrives in Sunnydale for the opening of the hellmouth. Once the hellmouth is 'activated' it starts attracting more and more demons.
