I think that first and foremost, you should be comfortable with yourself to rely on, as a person. PJ isn't saying that friends are a bad thing, but you just can't rely on other people the same way you can rely on yourself. Other people help, but most of the time they do more harm than good.
I'm not saying I don't have friends - I do, and I love them completely and truly, because I know that these people brook no insolence from me, tell me when I'm being stupid, and try to right me when I'm wrong. That, people, is the definition of a friend. But I think you have to be at a certain point where you're comfortable with yourself to have friends - i.e., what happened if all of your friends just up and hated you from this day on? What if they left you in the dust? All you would have is yourself, and that's the point. When the sh-t gets too thick, you're the only one you can rely on, because your friends aren't/can't be there for you.
Now, Wannabee, Elmo, I grew up in a really messed up family. My father died last year because of alcoholism. When something like that happens, there are only a handful of people around you, if any at all, than can understand what you're feeling. For the most part, you have to deal with it on your own. Your friends can't help you through something like that.
Also, a group of friends that follows eachother around like sheep isn't a group of friends, that's a damn cult. Just thought I'd add that.
