One character often overlooked in the importance of Buffy is Jonathan Levinson. Here I will present some valid reasons as why he is often overlooked in the show. He is a key character that has alot of impact.
Jonathan first appeared in the second season episode Inca Mummy Girl. He almost died by locking lips with Impala, Alpaca, Ampata or whatever she called herself. Xander unbeknownst saves him, thus creates the butterfly effect that will echo and impact everyone in the series.
In Reptile Boy he gets to accompany Cordy to the Bronze after the snakeguy tries to eat her. This helps to establish Cordy as a deeper character. While she values external appearances, she values her safety even more.
The Trio of vampires the Master sends after Buffy first used Jonathan as leverage. This action again placed Jonathan in the foreground of the main storylines. Reaffirming his importance in the narrative.
He became a 'bad egg' in Bad Eggs, he was tormented by the swim team in Go Fish. He was invited to Buffy's Welcome Home party in Dead Man's Party. Both Cordy and Buffy fought over his allegiance and support in Homecoming and he was a key factor in making the Wishverse, and it's was Harmony's joke about him being Cordy's boyfriend that was one of the final straws.
He represented Sunnydale High when he presented Buffy the Class Protector Umbrella to show the entire classes appreciation of her in The Prom. As as a result, you could say he was partially responsible for SAVING Buffy in The Freshman in season 4, as seeing the umbrella and remembering what it meant, gave Buffy her mojo back. If not for Jonathan the thai stick smoking vamp would have had his way with her.
All of that happened before he became a bigger influence on the show with episodes like Earshot and Superstar. Then of course he became evil and had an even bigger impact.
It could be argued that he was a main character. While he wasn't onscreen that much, when he was he had an effect, and is often overlooked.
