I think some of the disagreement when people misinterpret the meaning is that they look at the subsequent seasons and say it was set-up for this or that no, it wasn't, because this was meant to be the final season. They were not thinking beyond that season let alone setting something up.
It was a thank you. Why does it have to be more than that? Something can just be an expression of gratitude without it being related to feelings or lust or whatever.
It could definitely be just a thank you. But I think it was more than that because Buffy kissed Spike on the mouth. She knew he believed he was in love with her, so she must have known that he would consider a kiss on the mouth to be more than a thank you. In a later episode he says (I'm going to misquote this, so apologies, but I think I've got the gist) 'We kissed Buffy. It means something' - so to Spike a kiss is more meaningful than just a 'thank you'
She was speaking from the heart. There are different kinds of love. By this point Spike had proven himself to her as being on her side and she trusted him implicitly. And the gift is the first time she trusts Spike more than Giles when it comes to Dawns safety which really does set up for how she chose Spike over Giles at the end of S7 too. That would be rude to say I love everyone but Spike.. Spike, I really like you. I mean, come on, she was trying to die with panache not honesty and integrity in tact.
Oh, yes, I couldn't agree any more. Totally agree. She was speaking from the heart. There are different kinds of love. Really? Or is that sarcasm? I'm confused. Isn't it a law that we can't agree? Did you wake up on the "not contrary" side of the bed this morning? Is there an apocolypse coming? Darn, and right before the weekend too.Oh, yes, I couldn't agree any more. Totally agree.
I said that a long time ago. I said the Gift was the perfect ending as it made Spike the hero he wanted to be, and he was redeemed from and by Buffy; Buffy could go out on her terms- fighting- saving the world and the ones she loved one last time; Dawn finally understood her place and her worth. The Gift was the perfect ending to the show and they went and ruined it. The series would have ending on a high note. (except for Buffy's death, but she was an 87 year old man by that point anyway)Really? Or is that sarcasm? I'm confused. Isn't it a law that we can't agree? I love seasons 6 and 7. They just don't really belong to the Buffy show from the previous network. They have a completely different tone, atmosphere and purpose. You have Buffy the Original Series (seasons 1 - 5) and the Buffy the Reboot Series (seasons 6 - 11)@Mr. Pole but season 6 and 7 were so great, I definitely wouldn't have loved the series as much without seeing them all grown up and learning to deal with life and each other. And we disagree again! We averted the apolcolypse. 🙂

@GoSpuffy Yes, between the Brexit fiasco and now the GoPo accords, yes, the earth is doomed
It was only about 4 episodes later in "the gift" when Buffy says to everyone sitting around the table, including Spike, "I love you all". Not I love most of you, or I care for you all or I love all of you except Spike. I don't think it was a romantic love at this time but I think it is clear that she accepts Spike as part of her inner circle. He fought by her side, protected her family, she knew of all her friends he would be the one she could trust Dawn with the most. Later when Spike says "I know you never loved me but you treat me like a man" he's acknowledging that he knows they are close, it's not the romantic love he wanted but he appreciates the friendship she is offering and that it is enough. There's definitely some pretty strong feelings between them at the end of season 5. I can see why she turned to him with her secret and looking for solace in S6.
I just want to add that Giles, Xander and Willow have saved Buffy and Dawns life numerous times, and not once do we see Buffy kissing them on the mouth as a way of thanks. Not once.
Yet Spike, who Buffy says she hates, gets a kiss on the mouth. It only makes sense to me if she she has feelings for him.
Giles, Willow and Xander aren't in love with Buffy at that point so why should she kiss them?
But why would she kiss someone who was in love with her?
Probably because she thinks she owes him that for protecting Dawn, and, as I said, as a reward. If Spike weren't in love with her but desperately wanted to be friends with her instead, she probably wouldn't have kissed him but had given him a handshake or a hug.
I'm not saying it was a clever move, though, because it might have sent wrong signals to a soulless demon.
