Why have the kittens been introduced to the story?

  1. Christos Gage is a cat lover, it's his story, and he adds to it whatever he wants. And he makes it very clear that good people have cats (Spike, Xander) and evil people have dogs (Harmony). 😛
  2. Spike rescued the kittens and said he would find homes for them, but they still are in the apartment - it seems Spike is raising them (3 at least). Which means that he is taking care of *living* creatures that, if are not as demanding as dogs, still need some amount of attention: feeding, a clean sand box, catnip for their entertainment. Those who have pets know that's a commitment for 15 years at least. 🙂
  3. The kittens actually are the six members of the Magic Council in disguise: D'Hoffryn, Keiko, The Quiet Man, Matango, Monarch and Brahma. They surelly can see ghost Anya. 🙄
  4. The kittens are in the story only to have a horrible death at the end of S10. 😱

Isn't this Jane Espenson's fault?

Vampire rescuing cute furry animals?
I thought it was a homage to Angel rescuing the puppy in 'Orpeus', which was such a great scene and proves that Dogs are much nicer than Cats.

Sorry but, Cats don't do anything. Not compared to wonderful doggies.

I hope the kittens don't die though...Maybe the demon Trio will take them hostage and threaten them? That wouldn't actually surprise me at this point.
So yeah, they will be used to 'raise the stakes' at some stage in the future. My s10 prediction.

Certainly, they do! Obviously, you know haven't had much experience with cats.

They puke, crap, and pee all over the furniture and carpet, they unroll every paper towel and toilet paper roll that they can get to, they claw up everything wooden in the house, and if they ever do get off their dead a**es and go outside, they catch live birds and chipmunks and release them in the house.

As for what they actually don't do, you never hear of a cat telling its family that strangers are nearby, you never hear of a cat dragging its disabled or unconscious master out of a burning house or rescuing them from drowning, and the absolutely NEVER fight off a bear or an intruder to protect their family.

I'm a dog man, myself, but that obviously doesn't mean that I don't know cats.

my theory, no not bunnies, is that the writers are exploring the buffy/spike relationship and they know there are a lot of haters in the world so they need to clean spike up a bit. He has to apologize for the AR (done), he has to become closer with the scoobies (done), he has to make up for gambling for kittens (done by caring for these little guys), and on and on. Since spuffy is my OTP I accept what ever they have to do to move the story forward. I just hope this is going to last awhile and they aren't going to kill spike after everyone forgives him.

Well, I hope he's not planning any poker games...

When in a story that wasn't about the animal, the animal does not end up being killed in a very gruesome way?!
Bottom line: cats don't do (good and useful) things. Cats do (evil and disgusting) things...

And the kittens are a way to humanize Spike, to show him in a every day, very normal activity - he still fights monsters, but afterwards he returns home to take care of them.
