I once heard (or read... ? anyway...) that Buffy (or rather: SMG) had a black belt in TKD, but I might be mistaken.

Did she? I know she had some sort of formal training in the martial arts. What about Eliza Dushku? David B? James M? etc?

I'm just interested in their martial arts background. And the sword fighting scenes... I know that "doubles" were used in most fight scenes, but they actors themselves had to have at least a LITTLE training, yes?

I think that I once read that Eliza had had training as a dancer. If so, she has the same strength, balance, and flexibility as a martial artist, and would have no problem performing the movements required for the carefully choreographed fight scenes such as would be required to play her part. In fact, dancers often are able to do better stage fighting than actual martial artists. Jean Claude Van Damme is a perfect example. His "martial arts" training consisted more of ballet that karate.

Yeah, look at Summer Glau in Serenity. She's a gifted ballerina and a fantastic stunt fighter cos she moves with such grace.

Hmmm... I found an article from AskMen.com that states that SMG did study Tae Kwon Do for 5 years & does indeed have a black belt. But I couldn't find anything on the others.

Thanks for all your responses, tho!

It wouldn't really matter anyway, all of the fighting in Buffy is purely to show off. I can say with near-certainty that all characters in Buffy (except for maybe Spike or someone else that keeps it simple) would get their arse royally kicked all over the place.

ive heard, i think on commentaries, that james marsters likes to do at least some of his own stunts, but im not sure exactly which ones. they said they dont always let him because they cant afford letting their actors get hurt. i know he set his hand on fire for the show once, i think in lover's walk. i dont know about fighting training though. he might just have fun doing it, but not be trained for it.

I think I saw that interview. He said something along the lines of, if his feet don't leave the ground or his not getting smashed in the face with something, it's him.

It;s next to impossible to tell with any accuracy just based on what we see in the fight scenes in the show, because they're as carefully choreographed as a dance routine, plus as much as 90 % of what you see is done by the stunt doubles.

the stunt doubles are annoying me at the moment, every time i watch it more and more seems to be clearly done by stunt doubles

I was incredibly annoyed by it, at first, too, but I learned to think of it as the characters going Super Sayan rather than the editors screwing up. 🙂 Although the screwup in OMWF was a bit much even for my suspension of disbelief.

Super Sayan? Your a fan of DragonBall Z aren't you?
I never did mind "stunt doubles". Most of the time I couldn't tell anyway, & I'm a stickler for detail. Every now & then I could tell the double wasn't SMG, because SMG is so TINY, and the double was quite a bit bigger than Sarah, & there was a couple of times that you got a glimpse of the double's face, & then KNEW it wasn't SMG. But most of the time, IMHO, doubles weren't obvious.

David Boreanas' fight double was the most noticeable one, at least during the last year of "Angel." He was considerably lighter than David and moved much faster, plus David couldn't throw a decent kick much above waist level, so none of the really impressive foot work was his. Understandable, of course. The man's an actor, not a serious martial artist.

the stunt doubles are way obvious (and im not just talking about lunchlady dorris lol) tho i do like the "whats my line" line buffy says to kendra calling her the pink ranger, since one of smg's stunt doubles was the stunt woman for kimberly in mmpr and david's stunt dude was the head of stunts on mmpr too. yep power rangers geek that i am.... well more super sentai actually

Yes, they're often quite obvious...one of the worst "oh, come on" moments was Spike's double in "School Hard". That blond wig looks ridiculously fake, no way I could ever believe this was JM himself.

I think the more you watch it, the more you see the difference between the actors and the doubles. I always thought the one for Faith was very bad... hideous. With Buffy, from behind and the side, the double looked a lot like her most of the time ... maybe bigger, but the hair and slight side profile was pretty close. But sometimes, it was way off!

You could always tell with Spike though, because the guy had totally different bleached blonde hair than Spike.
