The Little Things that make Season 6 so Good

I thought I'd start a thread about this because in season 6 I think it is more the little, subtle things that make it good rather than the main grand events. For, of course, all the main grand events end badly: Spike trying to rape Buffy, Willow trying to destroy the world because of what happened to Tara, The Trio power-tripping, and of course The Anya and Xander Wedding.

I'll start off with a few of the little things in Older and Far Away that stand out in my memory:

1) Tara defending Buffy against Spike, the whole muscle cramp thing
2) Clems skin condition!
3) Clem saying, "I think he seemed cute"
4) Anya dancing by just waving her hand
5) Them all staying up late playing cards and monopoly
6) Anya being genuinely hurt by Dawn's Stealing
7) Halfrek trying to make a dramatic exit forgetting to lift the curse

I'm sure there's loads more I forgot 🙂, I'll come back with more little moments from other episodes in season 6 later on.

12.) Anya rubbing Dawn's head in "Older and Far Away"

That is one of the best things ever!! 😀

Season 6 is not my favorite, but I love all of this:

- Anya and the bunnies in Tabula Rasa.
- Under Your Spell.
- Giles actually saying "oogly-boogleys" In Tabula Rasa.
- Anya patting Giles' shoulder in OMWF, right before Spike's song scene comes up.
- Andrew and the jet-pack.

Okay, here's a few more little moments I like, this time from As You Were,

1) the vampire not wanting to fight Buffy because of the smell from working at doublemeat palace, (mentioned also by StarSlayer)
2) Buffy in doublemeat palace saying, in response to Riley talking to her about a demon he's chasing, "My hat has a Cow"
3) Spike showing his vulnerable side to Buffy when she founds out he is "the doctor", "you know what I am!"
4) Willow being her old self as Buffy's best friend on her side against Sam, Rileys wife
4a) Willow taking hope from what Sam says to her about getting through the magic addiction.
5) Willow saying, "Bitch", as an aside to buffy about Sam as Sam and Riley fly away
6) Anya being so genuinely and innocently happy about the fact Xanders only nervous about the wedding day but is looking forward to the marriage it leads to.

More to come soon I'm sure, once I've re-watched the next few episodes 🙂

I love that Buffy's first coherent words when she comes back from the dead are, "Is this Hell?" Okay, not the happiest of moments, but it brilliantly captures the way the world appears to her at that moment. She just crawled out of her own grave to find Sunnydale on fire and overrun with demons. Then, she sees a double of herself drawn and quartered. Of course she would think it was Hell!

Happier stuff:
- Tara, "Can't we just skip it? Can't you just be kissing me now?"
- Anya as a Charlie's Angel.
- The opening scene of Hell's Bells - Buffy and Willow's horror at the bridesmaid dresses contrasted with Anya's glee.
- Buffy deciding she wants to show Dawn the world at the end of Grave.

Season 6 is my second least favourite season but I really like those things you mentioned, especially Halfreck making a dramatic exit but got done by her own spell, lol.

Even under a spell, Anya is really afraid of bunnies.

2.) Giles' entrance in "Two to Go." "I'd like to test that theory."
3.) Xander's praying in "Tabula Rasa"
4.) Xander and Willow's scene in "Grave" (I still cry buckets).
5.) Tara talking to Dawn about her break-up with Willow, while Dawn has a milkshake

Season 6 is my favorite. My favorite "little" moments are the scenes that point up the parallel between Willow's addiction to magic and Buffy's unhealthful attachment to Spike. Remember in "Get it Done," Buffy wants to remove everything that might remind Willow of magic, including Kokopelli, even candles? She doesn't want to remind Willow of what she's trying to give up. Then she finds Spike's lighter. "And that would be bad," she said. There are a couple of other similar moments.

I hadn't noticed that one before with Anya in OMWF, I'll have to look for that next time I watch it, and Andrew and the jet pack, thats a great moment I'd forgotten about that!

Here's some little moments from Hells Bells:
1) As racheltng said: "The opening scene of Hell's Bells - Buffy and Willow's horror at the bridesmaid dresses contrasted with Anya's glee."
2) As Starslayer said the buffy/spike interaction, particularly in my mind the bit with Spike saying Buffy glows, and Buffy saying it's because her dress is radioactive!
3) The argument between Xander's dad and the demons, "he's starting to make my suckers twitch"
4) Anya practicing her vows, vowing to be Xanders sex poodle
5) Willow to Xander: I'll say this for the y-chromosome, it doesn't look bad in a tux
6) Xander to Buffy: You wanna get lucky? I've still got what 15, 20 minutes
7) The band playing the music by mistake when buffy walks up then back down the aisle.

My 6 year old loves Spike's "First he'll kill her then I'll save her. First I'll save her, then I'll kill her" from Walk Through The Fire.

Yeh I remember liking that bit too first time watching it, although I was about 18, not 6!

Okay, I'm going to put some down for Entropy, first to mention Normal Again, I'd completely forgot about that episode, it's one of those great standalone episodes, there's not many little moments in it, its just one continuous, good episode, with Buffy struggling between the two realities, not knowing which to go for, the most emotional bit is when Buffy says goodbye to Joyce:

JOYCE: You've got ... a world of strength in your heart. I know you do. You just have to find it again. (whispering) Believe in yourself.
BUFFY: You're right. (sad smile) Thank you.
Joyce smiles.
BUFFY: (tearful) Good-bye.

That bit really gets me..
The funny moments are all the Xander/Spike banter, Spike saying he should have been a man and gone through with the wedding, and Xander feeling sorry for Spike and his fantasies.

A few things from Entropy then:

1) Anya has great moments throughout this episode trying to get them to wish bad things on xander, particularly when she gives up with Willow and Tara and says, "if you love men so much, go love men!" and
2) says to xander, "congratulations all your friends still love you!", and storms off
3) Buffy and Dawn going shopping together, (good to see them doing normal things together for the first time in a long time).
4) Spike being sincere about his feelings for Buffy, "I don't hurt you"
5) Willow building up the drama, trying to find the feed for the magic box on her cpu
6) The Trios reaction when they see the magic box feed and think it's porn

Thats all I can think of for now, both really good episodes, I'll update with some more later 🙂

Okay, I've not posted on here in a while, cos I've been a bit busy moving home, and so I hadn't got round to watching any Buffy, but I just rewatched, seeing red last night so I thought I'd share a few comments about it:

Firstly, I think the whole rape incident was all a bit rushed, one minute Dawns talking with Spike and he seems not too bad, the next minute he goes over to Buffy's and tries to rape her. Other than that it was very cleverly done for effect, with Buffy in the bathroom and injured after a fight with a vampire and a run in with a tombstone, but it did seem a bit out of character for Spike to do what he did, and then for him to rush out of town all angry and based on what he said to Clem suggests he was going to get the chip out, not to get his soul back.

Anyway, other than that gripe, there are plenty of good little moments:

1) Obviously Andrew and the jet pack incident stands out
2) Buffy and Xander getting their friendship back on track
3) The interaction between Jonathan and Andrew
4) The shock ending with Warren coming to shoot Buffy in her garden made for such a contrast with the surroundings and with the usual way for things to go badly, i.e. its normally in a cemetery at night time.
5) Clem consoling Spike

Another slight gripe, I felt tara and willow were also too rushed in the way they got back together as if they did it ready for the dramatic effect at the end of this episode. It was still very believable, I just think it could have been built up to a bit better, and the same for the Spike rape of Buffy.

 

[Willow My Love]

The attempted rape scene was so rushed because James Marsters would only put up with one take. He wouldn't redo it, and has since said he'd never do anything like it again.

I love the scene with Dawn sleeping in the bed with the Buffybot. It was the ONLY time I've ever felt bad for Dawn.

I love the scenes with Willow and Tara, especially in Hell's Bells when Xander says Willow had something more important to do, and she's helping Anya and Tara with Anya's dress. (Sidenote: LOVED ANYA'S DRESS) And I love in Older and Far Away when Tara stands up for Willow. It shows she's come a really long way since we first met her. I think finding out she wasn't really a demon helped her be stronger, but that's just my theory.

I loved Anya crying and walking down the aisle. It kind of broke my heart.

Buffy saying, "Everything here is hard, and bright," has always stuck with me. Not sure why I love that line so much, but I do.

And, of course, anything Willow-centric I'm down for.

It was the viewers' acceptance of Spike as one of the good guys on the show that inspired Noxon and Whedon to make him try to rape Buffy as an act of desperation to be close to her. "People kept saying, You know, Spike's a really great guy, he's so great," Noxon explains. "I'm like, I know, he's come a long way. But in his heart of hearts, he still doesn't quite know the difference between right and wrong. We really wanted to show that ... which is why we took it to such an extreme."

As for the Tara/Willow reunion being rushed, well DUH! It was done exactly so as to create the largest amount of heartbreak possible, i.e. Willow losing Tara just as she's recovered from her magic problem and just as she's forgiven.

That's a good moment that, it's almost like Anya saying "the show must go on, even without the groom if need be!". It makes a great ending to Hells Bells

It sounds like they perhaps added in the attempted rape when viewers were still accepting of Spike and his actions in season 6. I personally don't think it's out of character.

I don't think it was out of character necessarily, I just think they could have led up to it in a way that was more believable. Buffy did nothing at all to provoke Spike or upset him, so why then was he particularly motivated at that time to go over there and rape her, having not long ago just had a heart to heart conversation with Dawn, Buffy's sister?
