And I would love to find out what the symbols mean, if they do mean anything. Chances are they mean nothing 🙁

I think that I've seen the second one in one of those "ancient astronaut" books back when that was a popular theory, but I'm not positive. More likely, they're just random markings, no significant meaning or origin intended.

I've never thought of them before. I suppose they're meant to protect or help Buffy focus.

Considering that I think they show has used real languages and symbols before, chances are these really mean something, like the latin spells and the writing on Tara's back in Restless.

The writing on Tara's back is supposedly a old greek poem, made by Sappho, rumoured to have been gay (maybe making her the first known lesbian in history). Basically it was a confession of love, a pray to the goddess of love, that ended with Sappho praying that the person she loved would love her back, even against that person's will. Sounds like foreshadowing for the mind spells in season 6.

If they're protection symbols then they're not very good ones - those horrible demons with the weird tongues in Family still managed to get in and attack Buffy. Were there any other moments that demons got into the training room? I can't remember.

So I'm gonna guess that they're to help Buffy focus and train.

Maybe if they hadn't been there, the demons would actually have killed someone? So they work, but they're not very powerful?

But if they do work like that, I'd expect Buffy's and the others' homes to be covered in them as well. So it's more likely a focus thing.

I can't say that they definitively are anything, but the do look like the stuff I saw on central american native art.

Hey, I'm sort of agreeing with you. They look like the symbols I saw on indigenous art in Guatemala and Honduras.
