This was very interesting. Its taken from a book I have entitled "Reading the Vampire Slayer: The New, Updated, and Unofficial Guide to Buffy & Angel" by Roz Kaveney. The article was written by Justine Larbalestier:

"In some respects, Spike is a mixture of elements from all Buffy's previous love interests. He's Angel: the brooding demon lover with a soul; he's Parker Abrams: callous and mean to women; he's Riley (Finn): consumed by unrequited love."

What do you think about this??? I never really thought about Spike this way.
 
Those are all very excellent points. I think the Spike character went though some very obvious and major transformations during the course of the show. So if we look at him over the 7 seasons, then I absolutely agree with the above statements. But I wouldn't say he was all of those things, all at once!

I'd have to agree with that. Spike is definately a very unique character. But I have to say, even though his character resembled Buffys ex loves, he still had alot of sarcastic humor that was only Spike! The man was hilarious!
 
I don't neccesarily agree with that---


I think Spike was actually alot like Buffy ( thats part of the reason she hated hin so much) they are evebn setup that way well way back in school hard --- Buffy being the different slayer and Spike being a different vampire there are so many parralles in that ep. its crazy just watch it I mean its scary.
 
If we're comparing Spike to all Buffy's past boyfriens, then what about Scott Hope? She dated him for longer than Parker.

I don't know..I was just intrigued by the quote...Scott turned out to be a dog though...especially at Homecoming.
 
Totally agreeing with the initial post and totally loving the fact that I share first names with the girl who wrote that assessment! 😉

I think that Spike shared a lot of similarities with Buffy, but overall, he was also a lot different from her. That is what made them interesting.

I agree with this...it's like opposites attract, and often have really great chemistry together..but we enjoy watching their differences cause problems 🙂

I think they were very much same except the only thing opposite about them was the good vs. evil thing and even that was ambiguos.

Spike a brooder ???? Nah. Demon lover who went out to aquire a soul, yeah. Unlike Angel he understood that just brooding does no one any good. Not those who were killed when you were soul-less, not yourself, and not those you want to help.
Callous and mean to women ??? Puh-lease!! Now there is somebody who has never seen this character. The vampire who so tenderly took care of his princess ? The one who clearly had feelings for Joyce, for Dawn, for Tara, Anya, Willow ?
Consumed by unrequited love ? Now that is one we can all agree upon. Not like Riley however who seemed to have moved on rather quickly once he caught that helicopter out of town. No looking back for him. In fact when I think about it Riley was a class 1 a----. He wasn't getting what he needed from Buffy ( intimacy ) , paid a vamp-whore to take care of him, and got all huffy and self-righteous at Buffy giving her an impossible deadline when it was his cheating that preciptated the show down.
 
Wow... that's cool... I never saw that before... Although I knew about the Spike beling slightly like Angel part...

I agree. Especially about his caring for women. Especially Dawn. He kept saying it was cos if anything happened to Dawn, Buffy would be heartbroken, but he really cared about Dawn. You could tell when he was in the tower, right before he was thrown of it, the way he looked at Dawn. He was worried about her, not himself. And he obviously cared for Joyce, with the flowers and all. And his love for Buffy doesn't really need to be discussed. The only women he's really been mean to was Harmony, but that's just one. Unless I have forgotten someone.

Spike was Buffys dark side she was so scared to face. Being with Spike was like overcoming her demons. No pun intended! :dork:

and spikes attraction to her was well , he was attracted to goodness the goodness inside him he had to face that as well
 
If Spike was consumed by unrequited love, it was due to his own refusal to accept the possibility that Buffy was in love with him. He thought that he knew enough about Buffy to be certain of this. But as Buffy had pointed out in "Never Leave Me", he didn't know her that well.

I love Spike, but he can be mean to women. Don't forget about Harmony.
